Also...12km driving an old cadillac from Los Angeles up the coast and in to Canada and down through Monument Valley etc back to LA. DH and I and a 3 man tent. Took us 3 months. Best holiday ever.

Is there a typo? 12km? You drove 8 miles in 3 months? 🤣

Chicago to San Francisco by Greyhound bus - one journey of about 48 hours. The route went via Cheyenne in Wyoming and Salt Lake City in Utah.

St Louis to New Orleans by train - should have taken 24 hours but we were delayed due to flooding and it took over 30 hours.

Did a couple of other long train journeys across America but I think that was the longest one.

Chicago to Vail, Colorado. I owe the displeasure to American Airlines.

London to Beijing by train, then trains down to Chengdu in China, bus to Tibet, truck across Tibet to Kailash and then back into Nepal. Just worked it out at nearly 13,000 km! Done over 6 months though.

I love travelling overground on extended holidays: one trip travelling from one side of a continent to another, or around it in the case of Australia.

12000 miles in Greyhound buses round USA and Canada.

10000 miles by bus around Australia, including one 42 hour coach trip.

4000 miles by train around Europe

Many miles around SE Asia by train and bus

Many miles around South Africa and Zimbabwe by bus

Several hundred miles around the Galapagos island by boat

There are others!

Wherever has included the Netherlands, Italy, Southern France, Spain, Germany, Luxembourg, Monaco.

Moscow to Beijing and back about 25 years ago. Took about 5 days on one train. Return journey through Mongolia.

Also Moscow to Tashkent. Can't remember how long that took.

autiebooklover · 05/10/2023 10:49

I've done Dover to Calais it feels far but is actually only 52 miles . Although if I go from my home town it was 270 miles. I've done my home town to Isle of Wight at 240 miles and my home town to Glasgow also 240 miles. (Yes I'm in the middle)

Singapore to Chiangmai, all trains and buses, and 1 boat! Loved it. Wish could do more overland travel.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 05/10/2023 10:51

Chiang Mai to Penang on sleeper trains, was a lot of fun.
York to Rome was about the same distance I think but I had kids that time, less fun.

cocksstrideintheevening · 05/10/2023 10:53

Coach from Kent to Italy and to Austria, think Italy was further - school ski trips.

We drive to Bordeaux several times a year now. Love a road trip.

We always travel to and around France by train. Longest journey I have taken is Madrid to London - we got the overnight train from Madrid to Paris and then the Eurostar to London.

I would love to do some longer train journies. It is finding the time - perhaps a retirement plan!

Florence. Back in the day you could put your car on a train at Calais, sleep overnight, and drive off in Milan. The train was always full of Brits in Classic cars, quite often they broke down and got stuck on the trains, and everyone had to push them off to release the cars around them. They all came with in with lots of wine though, so many happy hours before bed. The best bit was the riot for keys. In France they were all taken and sorted by number/position in the train. By the time you got to Milan they were dumped from a single bag onto a table and you had to sift through hundreds of identical keys to find your own.

Happy days.

I’ve done Edinburgh to Tokyo overland: train from Edinburgh to Valdivostock and then ferry to Japan.

I nearly did Bali to Edinburgh, but our visas ran out in Uzbekistan and we had to fly between Tashkent and Moscow. So Bali to Tashkent I guess.

Would love to do that. I hear the ferry from Vladivostok is horribly rough (I get seasickness)

FiveGoMadInDorset · 05/10/2023 11:24

dorset to Budapest

It was fine when I did it! I’m not sure the direct ferry from Russia to Japan still runs though - I think you may have to go via South Korea these days.

CrushingOnRubies · 05/10/2023 12:06

Switzerland i think could be further to get south western France. But Switzerland felt further away

KnickerlessParsons · 05/10/2023 12:07

To Prague

Riverlee · 05/10/2023 12:08

north Scandinavia - ferry and train

MissAmbrosia · 05/10/2023 12:12

We did Tuscany and back by car, which seemed a long way. And Barcelona on a coach. Then I remembered the "Hapsburgs" coach tour we did years ago which went to Brno, Budapest, Lake Balaton, Ljubljana, Venice, Vienna and Prague, and then back to Dover. It was amazing, but my arse wouldn't stand it now. Well over 2500 miles. Also Dover to Zakopane by coach - 24 hours. By train - Brussels, Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Vienna, Tirol, Munich, Brussels.

BethDuttonsTwin · 05/10/2023 12:16

I've crossed the Atlantic on a ship several times.
