My husband travels to, across and around Europe primarily by train.

He says pretty much everywhere he goes they have nicer, better, faster cheaper trains than the U.K. does.

Many long driving trips here. Since last October I drove from Chicago to Phoenix, Arizona area 3 times, 3600 miles round trip each time. Last year there was an additional Arizona trip and a trip to Montana for a wedding.

Before that, most years we had a driving trip at some point. I was also regularly driving 300 miles one way to see my son and his family, they've since moved closer.

Toronto to Chicago by car and Calgary to Vancouver through the beautiful Rockies (car)

pastypirate · 05/10/2023 01:54

Sydney to Perth on the Indian pacific railway

Tezza1 · 05/10/2023 01:59

From Yokohama, Japan to London. Boat/ferries and trains.

Largely on Trans Siberian Railway hard class. Stretches of 48 hours on train followed by a night in hotel. At that time I think the total train time was about 7/8 days. Spent about 31/2 weeks doing it, all up.

We did fly back to Sydney.

Hertfordshire to Southern Albania (car)

Toronto to Vancouver (car)

Love a driving holiday.

Liverpool to Amsterdam and back in a day or so by coach and ferry.
Seattle to San Francisco by road over several weeks.

My husband in the late 80s and early 00s drove UK to Amman in Jordan on several occasions. Always in rather fabulous cars too. Drive to Italy, ferry to turkey then on through Syria.

Most of the way around Australia.

Lots of overland journeys in south America, ie, araquipa to Santiago. (36 hours I think).

About 5000km by car. Round trip Qld - Adelaide - Canberra - broken Hill - QLD.

In a car with no air con. But it was awesome. It was a long time ago, though.

More recently about 2000km round trip.

Spain, took 50 kids on a school coach trip!

user1477391263 · 05/10/2023 03:36

Various trips around China, each lasting a month. A lot of old, slow train travel, including some working steam trains! (This was over 20 years ago).

smokingcarriageonly · 05/10/2023 04:06

New Jersey to Flagstaff Arizona by train.
By car, drove from NJ to Des Moines Iowa, then north to Toronto via the Upper Peninsula in Michigan and back via upstate New York. I love US road trips.

Driving across the US, took 8 days

ApolloandDaphne · 05/10/2023 04:34

Stirling to Menton in a VW polo with a two man tent. Me and DH around 1986. It was a fabulous trip. We existed on baguette, laughing cow cheese and beer!

San Francisco to Las Vegas. 7 of us in people carrier. Tequila played a large part in that trip!

Scotland to France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Belgium then home again.

We love a road trip and can't wait until DH retires so we can explore further.

2 student Interrail holidays back in the day:
London-Paris-San Sebastian-Madrid-Algeciras-Marbella-Barcelona-Paris-London.

London-Calais-Paris-Berlin-Warsaw-Krakow-Lublin-Berlin and back via Hook of Holland.

Now I live in central Europe, so road trips to the UK and to see friends in Scandinavia are 3,500 km round trips - at least twice a year.

welshweasel · 05/10/2023 09:43

St Petersburg to Beijing by train, with stops in Siberia and Mongolia. 9 days actual travel including 4 days nonstop. I was 19 at the time and it was a brilliant adventure. My parents must have been having kittens!

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 05/10/2023 09:51

2 x 5000km round trips, southern Alberta to Yellow knife and back and then coast to coast and back in Mexico. Both were absolutely amazing.

Next year baring any disasters we're planning a trip to Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Sweden without flying.

Branleuse · 05/10/2023 09:52

UK to Corsica

lemonraincoat · 05/10/2023 09:52

Greyhound bus (before they went bust) round Australia. One leg of journey I think was about 36 hours long. Was young.

Saschka · 05/10/2023 09:53

Moscow (where I lived at the time) to Hong Kong via trans-Siberian railway and various chinese domestic trains. Took three months, but we took a very circuitous route visiting Mongolia, Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Kunming etc.

lemonraincoat · 05/10/2023 09:55

Also...12km driving an old cadillac from Los Angeles up the coast and in to Canada and down through Monument Valley etc back to LA. DH and I and a 3 man tent. Took us 3 months. Best holiday ever.

Oh god I also did a nightmare journey on Greyhound buses from Washington to San Diego - was going to a conference in San Diego when Hurricane Sandy hit, plane was diverted, and I spent the next 3 days on a coach travelling around places like Scranton (I was speaking at the conference, early in my career, and was desperate not to miss my slot. These days I’d just book into a hotel with a decent spa and wait it out).
