Rhodes tomorrow morning

We are due to fly to Rhodes tomorrow morning- going to Ixia at the top of the island. We are staying 3 nights until moving on to another island. Would you go? The resort is quite far away from the fires but I’m still very worried.

What you would save a 50 year old man before a baby and toddler with their mother? Glad you not in charge of any evacuations.

Ok so what about an elderly woman being evacuated over a 50 year old man?

Or an elderly woman evacuated over an 18 year old man?

I think people should arrive and be evacuated as and when they arrive. Perhaps children should take priority but they should go as a family and not be making someone wait because they happen to be a man. That's still someone's father/husband/son.

Everyone is precious to someone.

It's usual to evacuate the most vulnerable first?

I've seen it on Twitter from a Greek acc so can't read the whole tweet

Right. Perhaps someone on here can verify.
All I've seen is the current BBC info, copied above.

Well that looks pretty legitimate!

vera99 · 24/07/2023 12:41

Apologies it looks like a disinformation bot from the followers and their links don't check out, and they retweet Russian disinfo. Should be more careful in future. Twitter is a cesspit.

Maireas · 24/07/2023 12:43

Ah, ok @vera99 . Easily done. You posted in good faith.

It's not about being precious to someone. It's about ability to cope. A young fit healthy man can walk much further and survive hotter temps than an elderly person or young children.

@Laonikkos
You have not interpreted the map correctly, pink areas indicate historical wildfires (διαχρονικα καμενες εκτάσεις), light yellow indicates wildfire extent. More accurate / recent map below, not 55%, but approx. 8% (1/12?) on fire (still huge)

@Maireas fair enough, I see now that it was another poster who was being unnecessarily rude and you added a comment to that. Sorry.

vera99 · 24/07/2023 12:46

Their stuff is pretty clever they blend in a lot of true stuff and appear to be legit until you dig down. They are attempting to add fuel to the fire so to speak and spread panic. They maybe state actors or just quite clever trolls.

Ok, easily done. Nice of you to apologise. 👍

We are there now, being evacuated tonight. We never made our hotel but did find alternative (inferior) hotel accommodation for two nights.

To be honest, if your hotel not affected, will probably be fine, and the fire is in the central part of the island. There are revolving power cuts, though, which will affect hotel room power and air con.

However, the airport is very chaotic and it is an ‘evolving’ situation, so depends on whether you are likely to get stressed about it, and how you react when things go wrong..

Anyone that takes fairly young children and a pushchair on a hot holiday as the account above is a fool and would have a hard time whatever happened.

Seriously??

Why on Earth did you go? I’m genuinely flummoxed as to why anyone is still travelling there?

😂😂😂

45% wasn’t scary enough so it’s been upped to 55%. Standard.

Yeah but 8% is not dramatic enough.

Needs to be double figures and ideally over 50%.

Feelings don’t care about your facts.

Newbutoldfather · 24/07/2023 13:28

@Sweetashunni ,

When did you have the empathy bypass op?

We went as travel company did not advise against it, it was not headline news as of Saturday morning, and the authorities thought they had contained the fire in middle of island.

If we hadn’t travelled, we would have paid many thousands of pounds for nothing. As it is, at least we are getting a full refund.

Ifulikepinacoladas · 24/07/2023 10:55

I am not wrong! I literally have seen people arriving with my eyes!

There might be empty planes coming too but I am not bloody lying about people arriving ffs.

Well if it helps I'm sure you are not lying.

I suspect some might be seeing/hearing about how Jet2/TUI are handling this and assuming their policy applies to every airline/tour operator that serves the island...well guess what?

Some tour operators will have been largely unaffected by events on the east side of the island and there (of course) will be passengers travelling seat only for whatever reason....

I'm not sure how anyone can seriously believe that absolutely nobody is arriving in Rhodes by air....

HolidaySetting · 24/07/2023 15:17

AccidentallySuckedTheStrippersDick · 24/07/2023 10:37

I'm in kos at the moment. Arrived yesterday. The air is hazy with the smoke from Rhodes and you can barely see the mountains for it, occasionally you get a surprisingly strong smell of it. There are lots of small planes and helicopters flying over monitoring Kos island for fires. I have been monitoring the temperatures in the iPhone app all week before arriving and was surprised to hear reports and people in the Kos holiday group saying that the temperatures were not being accurately recorded etc. Got here and sure enough, the temperatures are WAY higher than being reported. The pilot himself said that when we landed at 1pm it was 38c and when we finally got the car hire sorted out around 2pm the digital thermometer outside the building said 41c. Yet my iPhone app still said 33c! At the hotel they have a whole month of temperatures saved and all of the guests agree that it's ridiculously hot, much hotter than previous years and it's awful that it's not being reported accurately.

I’m in Rhodes and the winds are NW so there’s no chance the smoke has made it north to you.

Hope everyone is safe out there. Best check with operator if it's safe to travel before setting off to the airport. Glad you arrived safely OP.

There are obviously both, you were saying there were no empty ones.

You misunderstood.my post then. That's not what I meant.
Too tired to argue with you.
