Rhodes tomorrow morning

We are due to fly to Rhodes tomorrow morning- going to Ixia at the top of the island. We are staying 3 nights until moving on to another island. Would you go? The resort is quite far away from the fires but I’m still very worried.

Thanks so much everyone. Currently waiting on a call back from Olympic to try to change to Kos-Symi- Kos as opposed to Rhodes-Symi-Kos 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

The hats probably the best option right now to change your flight to Kos if you can.

Walruswithbraces · 23/07/2023 14:00

@Dogmatix34 That change sounds sensible to salvage the holiday. Hope you have a great time.

Please don’t. Holidays are a reason the world is on fire! Stop flying abroad and perpetuating the problem

Livestock releases 10 times more emissions that all air travel. This is a classic example of how education and awareness is much needed when it comes to addressing global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

TheCyclingGorilla · 23/07/2023 15:24

There are limited resources on the island, and they are stretched to snapping right now. Local people have been picking up tourists in their cars/trucks/buses/ boats and taking them to safety. I know OP is trying to rearrange but I think I wouldn't go in this situation. It is a lot of money to lose but it wouldn't sit well with me to knowingly take precious resources from people who need it most.

Dogmatix34 · 23/07/2023 17:12

Now flying to Kos on Weds , 1 night there then rest of holiday as planned. Thanks again for everyone’s help.
Such a tragedy for the people of Rhodes.

Surely they could be using your hotel for evacuees. You shouldn’t go. Yes it’s shit but you still have a house and you aren’t camped out on a beach…yet

Ylvamoon · 23/07/2023 17:25

I'm glad you have it sorted.

I strongly believe nobody should be flying to Rhodes and airlines like EasyJet ect are irresponsible.

The resources that are available (food & rooms) should be made available to the people affected by the fire. What's the point of cramming more people onto an already overstretched island?

I’m glad you managed to get it sorted, OP. Have a wonderful holiday.

I’m now desperately looking forward to my Greece holiday in a few weeks. 😅

I don’t understand how EasyJet and Ryanair could still be flying people out there when other airlines are sending planes to bring people back. Madness.

UnsungShero · 23/07/2023 17:32

Situations like this really bring out the worst in people, don’t they?

Which bit do you mean?

It sounds like the people there are really helping

Including volunteers

People who are more worried about getting to go in a holiday or getting a refund than trying not to contribute to the problem or take up resources.

Companies who contribute to this.

I think we're going to around and around on this until folks grasp a couple of points:

Firstly that unlike TUI and Jet2 the likes of Easyjet and Ryanair aren't necessarily just carrying holidaymakers...

Secondly this is the Greek Governments operation to run, not the UKs.

If they don't want people flying in to the island for whatever reason from whatever country they can easily put a stop to inbound services. FWIW at least some French, German, and other operators appear to be continuing to operate into Rhodes.

It's a big island and just maybe it's just possible Hotels, restaurants, etc in parts of the island not effected by the fires might be grateful of continued business.

Okay, I take your point.

It’s a scheduled airline. Some people on Easyjet/Ryanair/BA flights
will be people who live in Rhodes trying to get home!

notimagain · 23/07/2023 18:10

FWIW to get a feel for how this is being handled at Easyjet it's worth looking at the statement they made earlier today:

<<We are currently operating as normal to Rhodes however we continue to closely monitor the situation. We advise customers travelling to and from Rhodes to check the status of their flights on Flight Tracker.

Our tour operator, easyJet holidays is currently working to comply with requests of the local authorities and is in contact with customers in resort to support them.
We have sadly had to cancel easyJet holidays packages departing up to and including Tuesday 25 July, and customers will receive a full refund. We are proactively contacting easyJet holidays customers due to travel up to and including Saturday 29 July to confirm their options.

Any easyJet flight only customers who are booked to travel to or from Rhodes until 29 July can transfer for free to another date or can request a flight voucher for the value of their unused flights, by calling easyJet Customer Services....the safety and wellbeing etc >>

So they are not carrying any of their package tour customers out until 26th, sounds like those travelling up to 29th might get a choice.

OTOH flight only passengers can possibly fly as planned if the flight operates (though that's not spelt out) or switch flights or get a voucher...

Having flown on to Rhodes many times about 95% will be tourists at this time of year.

StillWantingADog · 23/07/2023 18:18

@smilesup yes I can absolutely believe it. My point is that holiday charters have a different responsibility to scheduled airlines. If you’re booked on the latter to some extent it’s up to you whether or not you want to go, though I would say it’s clearly highly advisable not to travel for the next few days at least.

Maddy70 · 23/07/2023 18:22

Rhodes is a big island. The tyres are not to be seen in other parts of Rhodes.

If it's unsafe your holiday will be cancelled. If it's safe it will go ahead as normal

I posted earlier my friend runs a bar in the north of the island and said it’s BAU there at the moment.

Yes but livestock is eaten by a huge percentage of the world's population. Holiday flights are taken by a tiny percentage.

It's not about finding the one bad thing that's causing climate change, there are many things that need to change. Flights AND diets.

Besides, very many flights are to resorts that are also terrible for the environment.

Yes, EDUCATION is needed.

Greenhouse gases emitted by livestock (methane) breaks down within 7 years of entering the atmosphere ...

Not that this is helpful to the people in Rhodes.

penelopepipsqueak · 23/07/2023 19:17

My dd was there last week and her hotel has burned down .

I wouldn't personally.

Remmy123 · 23/07/2023 19:24

Depends on where as many parts are ok!

also it was due to arson and not climate change.

Walruswithbraces · 23/07/2023 19:33

There's been a sudden outbreak of arson in southern Europe, Canada, and when it was summer there, Australia?

Yeah, right.
