Rhodes tomorrow morning

We are due to fly to Rhodes tomorrow morning- going to Ixia at the top of the island. We are staying 3 nights until moving on to another island. Would you go? The resort is quite far away from the fires but I’m still very worried.

We were evacuated from Kalathos to make that clear.

Jet2 and TUI have cancelled all flights to Rhodes, so other operators say do the same. As others have said, you will have to speak to them.

Only until Tuesday. Those going Wednesday can't do anything. I'm hoping they will refund and still go away before schools go back.

We are in Ixia right now. We were evacuated last night and spent the night in a school. We only arrived Friday but have changed our flights to come home tmo.
Ixia on the face of it seems unaffected but every hotel worker I've spoken to, we've both ended up in tears. It's awful. The most awful 36 hrs I've ever had.
Rhodes is not the place for a holiday right now.

Hope you’re ok the whole situation sounds horrendous i bet you can’t wait to get home. Stay safe.

trrk · 23/07/2023 10:55

If your flight is still running could you look at moving onto the other island sooner than planned?

Dogmatix34 · 23/07/2023 11:24

Just spoke to Olympic holidays who said all going ahead as usual and only if our flights are cancelled would we get a refund. There doesn’t seem to be a duty of care towards passengers 😢. I asked about going to our next island sooner. The problem is that it is Symi so we would still have to fly in to Rhodes and then get the ferry.

StillWantingADog · 23/07/2023 11:24

Yes but presumably you could go straight out again?

blacknredsweeties · 23/07/2023 11:25

My kids were due to go to Rhodes Wednesday with my sister. They have been offered a full refund. If your flight goes ahead you can't claim can you?

Walruswithbraces · 23/07/2023 11:27

No. Refund or no refund, you can't go. It's a disaster zone right now, respect the locals enough to not put pressure on their infrastructure for a jolly.

Who are you? Are you an official dealing with this

Dogmatix34 · 23/07/2023 11:33

It’s so gutting to think of losing all that money. I just know easyJet aren’t going to cancel unless the airport itself stops all arrivals.

OP posts:
blacknredsweeties · 23/07/2023 11:34

No one is going.

No one can even if they wanted to.

Which they don't!!

blacknredsweeties · 23/07/2023 11:34

@Walruswithbraces

Dogmatix34 · 23/07/2023 11:34

We could but feels like all the difficult logistics will still be there

Or the foreign office puts out an advisory against all but essential travel which is possible.

Overthebow · 23/07/2023 11:38

I wouldn’t go. Apart from the obvious dangers, the infrastructure there must be under so much pressure right now. Hospitals, emergency crew, government not to mention all the locals affected. I wouldn’t risk it, especially not for a holiday.

Monsteramum · 23/07/2023 11:39

No, I wouldn't. The fires are far from over and its predicted to get worse (according to the BBC) so flying into that right now would be madness.

Not quite, some airlines are still operating in/out of Rhodes (and selling seats for flights over the next few days)...so if for example you've bought flight only with one of those you may be able to travel...

For package Tours/all inclusive it's completely different.

Have you spoken to your insurance company?

Toobusytoocare · 23/07/2023 11:41

Son flew back yesterday. He was staying NW of the island. It was absolutely OK there. Airport was chaos because of fire planes.

@notimagain

Sorry I was replying to.,

The OP seems to be mainly spending time on other islands that are not affected by the fires and locals there would still appreciate tourists and the money they spend.

Maybe try to get some up to date information on what it's like in the northern part of the island around Rhodes town? Local Facebook groups and the Tripadvisor forum could be good for more up to date info. Rhodes is a large island and the whole place might not feel like a disaster zone. Are there ferries out to Symi on the same day and accommodation available in Symi?

one of the only sensible replies on here

We have a house on an island and flying to Rhodes next weekend.

SamW98 · 23/07/2023 11:58

Someone I know lives on Rhodes and runs a bar in Faliraki. He’s posted this on FB this morning

Current information as we know it for anyone concerned...

The fires are in the southern/central region (red) of the island. The rest of the island is as normal. We are in Faliraki (blue cross), our area, Rhodes town and airport is clear of the fires and operating as normal.

Its a big emergency in the affected area and everything is being done to ensure safety for everyone in the area. A major evacuation has taken place. All the authorities and a huge number of volunteers are working relentlessly to control the fire and helping those in need.

Its not all perfect, but this scale of emergency is unprecedented and not something a small island can be fully prepared for. International help is arriving now and we hope things will be under control very soon.

If you have holidays booked soon in the north, you shouldn't have much to worry about, but please check with your travel companies before you travel.

We'll post up any further developments in due course

An interview on sky news with a tourist there says people are still being flown in but people are being taken to safe places such as schools with concrete floors rather than their hotels.

Wouldn't get me on that plane no matter how much money I would lose! Sounds like a mess and wildfires spread frightening quickly if not under control.
