I was looking to go to the US for a week but the prices were astronomical and out of my price range. So going to Europe for a week. Destination undecided but looking at flights, accommodation and spending money, I'd still be lucky to spend less than £1000.

Omg

I call BS on this unless the poster is very wealthy or heavily in debt.

We do one 'big' holiday and one smaller. The big one would be abroad, but either flights out of season, or a ferry. We self cater and go for a maximum of one week to keep costs down. I try to do travel and accommodation for under £1k for that. Family of 5.
The smaller holiday will be in the UK and will be 4 days or so, again self catering, and closer to £500.

I love reading about everyone’s holidays tbh, really don’t understand the bitter turn this thread has taken.

Anyway, on topic, I never really cost things fully as I book in stages. Plus, as another poster said, I worry it might take a bit of the fun out of things, if I have to stick to a budget (not that I spend recklessly, IYSWIM).

Booked so far:
Antigua for 10 nights end of Feb,
Malta for 5 nights in Easter,
10 days interrailing in Central Europe in May,
9 nights Mykonos in September.

Still got around 2 weeks annual leave to play with, so will probably book a trip to somewhere in South East Asia in November.

For context, no kids, just DP and me.

Five days in Normandy during May half-term:

  • £420 in a nice self-catering chalet on a small holiday park
  • £200 on the ferry from Newhaven

A week in Majorca in the summer:

  • £2500 on a villa
  • £1100 on flights
  • £300 on a hire car

So £4520, plus charging my EV car, petrol for the hire car, food and days out. I'd say £7k all-in.

That's for 2 adults and 2 DC aged 10 and 13.

I always hated AI too on principle but then did one last year after years of self catering and will not go back. A break from the dishwasher and the washing machine turns out to be what I ACTUALLY need from a holiday...

WE have just booked AI in Turkey, for 5 for October half term for £5.5k

Oh god yes and THINKING about food! Planning, buying, cooking!

My DD was a really fussy eater too and it was great with AI that she could just try lots of things.

Funkyslippers · 14/02/2023 15:49

Underparmummy please could you tell me where you're staying if you don't mind. We want to go AI to Turkey this year

Underparmummy · 14/02/2023 17:36

We have booked Jiva Beach on Calis Beach, near Fethiye. Booked with Tui, we've never been to Turkey before!

£5k BB Greece 14 nights 4 people August, add prob £2.5k for food, drink, vehicle hire, trips etc

maddy68 · 14/02/2023 17:48

Book hotels independently. Book flights independently

Saves a fortune

MandeeMore · 14/02/2023 17:56

£4k, week all inclusive in Greece for 5.

It's our honeymoon, many years since we got married and we're taking DC with us. We've only ever done camping in the UK/France before.

No, we can't really afford it, but I also don't care. We desperately need it after 4 really, really difficult years.

Really depends when and where you are going. I costed up our trip separately and it was over £500 more.

kirinm · 14/02/2023 20:24

Trying to book somewhere for Easter but having difficulties deciding but anticipating spending about £2.5k for a week (DP, me and DD (4)).

Going camping in Dorset in august for a few days - think the campsite cost us about £150.

Hopefully a late summer holiday to either Ibiza or Majorca or a Greek island. Most likely air bnb

I've literally been calculating this today. It is much cheaper to go via an online agent unfortunately.

ScrumpyTree · 14/02/2023 20:27

2 weeks in Florida - £13k. Much more than it's ever cost us before but this is making up for it being cancelled in covid.

Center Parcs £900

Will have a city break at some point which I'll aim to keep under £1k.

It really does depend. For our Easter holiday we did this and it was a huge amount cheaper than we could have got a package for. But for our summer holiday I checked at the time of booking and the hotel alone (same room type) would have been £9393. We paid £5400 including flights and transfers.

kirinm · 15/02/2023 13:33

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best / cheapest website for booking flights?

Where to?

FoodieToo · 15/02/2023 14:59

I sometimes wonder if people who say that don't like AI have tried the really good ones ? Has to be a 5 star in my opinion and if you can afford it go somewhere like Ikos where it is mainly a la carte dining , even champagne is included in the AI. We never once went to a buffet there.
I couldn't do it for long but 5 days is pure bliss.
Don't write off AI until you have tried the very best ones .

kirinm · 15/02/2023 15:21

@TimingIsABitch Canary Islands? Everything I've seen is now more expensive than the hotels!

TimingIsABitch · 15/02/2023 15:37

I’d try the airlines direct eg EasyJet, TUI etc. We are going to Greece and worked out cheaper as a package as the tour operator gave a discount on the hotel and flight combined.

It’s not about quality, it’s about staying in a (posh) camp and not going out to sample the local culture and restaurants. To have variety of setting, and variety of interaction. We went to Cuba and did homestays, travelled around and saw the country…. staying in the best AI in Cuba, you may as well go to Spain. To me it’s soulless and about as far from ‘travel’ as you can get. I go to see a country, not eat posh food in a homogeneous ‘international’ setting. Everyone is different.

Yes I totally get that too but you can explore when staying AI. You can also eat out if you prefer . We do a mix of holidays and love exploring countries etc .

This summer we are doing 5 nights AI and then a villa in a small Greek town . Will hire a car and explore .

We have 5 kids ( mainly teens ) so AI is a real treat for us at the moment .
