I was looking to go to the US for a week but the prices were astronomical and out of my price range. So going to Europe for a week. Destination undecided but looking at flights, accommodation and spending money, I'd still be lucky to spend less than £1000.

4k for one week AI in Greece. 2 adults x 2 children

TimingIsABitch · 15/02/2023 19:25

The snobbishness about AI is really tiresome. Unless you are staying with a local family, going by rail, eating plants and weaving baskets it’s not a proper trip. 🙄

We used AI for a number of years as both DC liked the organised sports that weren’t available otherwise. We still hired a car, visited other places, ate out.

Perhaps some of us enjoy that…. you clearly enjoy AI. I’m not bothered about resorts full stop, but they have their place if that’s your thing.

nca89 · 15/02/2023 19:41

I was such a snob about AI before doing it (properly) myself, busy family with young children just needing good weather, beautiful hotel, easy but tasty food, entertainment on tap for the kids, spa for me, just couldn't bloody beat it. Holidays and travel aren't always the same thing, sometimes it is just about switching off, and AI is great for that. We travel too, but they're very different breaks.

Sunsetintheeast · 15/02/2023 19:41

Holidays and travel aren't always the same thing that’s the crux of it

Nah I don’t “clearly enjoy AI”. The DC liked the organised sports so we put up with it and hired a car and went out. Not everything is black and white.

Biscuitandacuppa · 15/02/2023 19:51

£200 for a week camping in Northumberland in August. £400 for 2 nights in Watford plus £100+ for Harry Potter studio tickets in July. Possibly a week at Easter camping on the Welsh coast will be about £170. Me and dd (12). We weren’t able to go away at all last year after I had a serious accident and although camping will be a struggle for me I can’t wait to make some memories this year!

So you ‘put up with it’, hardly a ringing endorsement. Dare I suggest that sounds a little snobbish, but you think of the children.

I realised I have been AI when skiing. So there you go, it isn’t black and white here either.

Around 20k for two of us, for 4 holidays.booked them in the last 2 weeks. Spurred on by the fact that we have had to use my Mums life savings and having to sell her house to meet the £2000 per week in a specialist dementia care home.it doesn’t pay to save. Others who have frittered money don’t have to pay a thing. Once our house is sold, The Dogs Trust get the balance, if there is anything left after nursing care.

FuzzySock · 15/02/2023 21:10

About 2.5k for Egypt in the spring, 2k for France and about 4k for NYC later in the year but it’s for DH’s milestone birthday so some of that was his present. Prices are for two adults.

Icequeen01 · 15/02/2023 22:19

Just booked a villa in Crete for 10 days in August. Cost of villa and flights for 3 is just over £4,000. We still have to organise car hire so I'm expecting another £500 or so for that. Then there's spending money on top. Annoyingly even though our DS is now an adult we are still governed by the school holidays as both DH and I work in schools.

Roll on retirement when we can take advantage of going out of school holidays when it's much cheaper.

MaryShelley1818 · 16/02/2023 11:04

All of these are for travel/accommodation/tickets but not spending money.

£200 - weekend in London for me and DS5 - Harry Potter Studios, Twycross Zoo and 2nts Premier Inn (HP tickets free due to a complaint)

£250 - weekend in May Haggerston Castle for me, DH, DS5 and DD2

£150 - Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Travelodge for weekend in York

Trip in May to Efteling in Holland, Belgium, Disneyland Paris for the 4 of us.
£1200 - Disneyland Annual Passes
£300 Efteling Tickets
£700 Disneyland Hotel
£300 Holland Hotel
£220 Eurotunnel
£130 2 x UK hotels on the drive

July - Disneyland Paris again with friends
£1000 Hotel
£300 Eurotunnel
£130 2 x UK Hotels

Parkdean Lake District caravan holiday - 5nts with my mam and the kids
£350 for our share of accommodation
£150 for attractions

November - Disneyland Paris again for the Christmas season
£500 Hotel (out of season budget)
£200 Eurotunnel
£130 2 x UK Hotels

Obviously a lot of petrol costs plus spends but you get a really good discount on food/drinks/merch with Annual Passes.

£6000 total for 3 foreign holidays and 4 UK breaks for 4 of us, I think that's pretty good vfm. We don't spend loads on eating out as tend to buy reasonably priced food with the kids - fish and chips at the Lakes, some self catering, we take loads of snacks to France for breakfast on the go.

Isnt that called deprivation of assets? Might be troublesome for you?

Wiluli · 16/02/2023 21:34

Around £ 2200 for a break at Disneyland and around £1600 for 10 days in Portugal . That’s for 7 for the Disney one and 6 for the second one ( oldest step kid can’t come ) .
we might go to late summer one to Cyprus still to be decided that will be around £2000 but we stay with family

Remmy123 · 16/02/2023 21:35

Struggling to find a decent AL in Greece for 6k!!! Family lf x5 - never used to cost this much 😬

We are not spending her money! This is our life savings, that we are spending in case we get dementia in 20 years time! I’d rather spend our money now, while we can enjoy it rather than spending £2k a week on nursing home fees.

Smithstreet · 17/02/2023 17:49

Main holiday 9 days in france in apartment by the beach, family of 5 in August. I used Tesco Vouchers for the tunnel. Accomodation £1300, petrol, tolls, food and activities probably be about another £1000. We also have a few UK breaks with friends some camping (x3) some premier Inn (x3) so probably another £3000 in total spends after food, activities etc.

melontone · 17/02/2023 18:51

AI holidays pre kids sounded like a nightmare to me as my holiday purpose was to actually explore. I did that again on one holiday with dc and swore never again. When you find a decent AI resort that suits yours and your child's needs, it quickly becomes a stress free and very relaxing holiday. A great kids club is also very important. When you have picky eaters, no restaurant in the middle of nowhere or some Michelin star restaurant would ever cater for your child's needs and that experience then quickly turns into a nightmare. Again experienced that when I went on holiday with a toddler to a BB so we could explore. The open buffet, ala carte or whatever your hotel offers then becomes heaven as you can pick and choose what your child can eat. Not renting a car to explore in 40c heat with a crying toddler at the back then turns into a airport transfer straight to the hotel then in to the pool because you've hired a babysitter at the kids club. It is what it is but until my dc can trek with me in the heat and cope with my exploring, AI all the way.

Remmy123 if it's any help at all we're going to Berut B Suites in Turkey. We are a family with 3 adults and 1 child so have to have 2 x 1 bed apartments because my 2 DDS won't share a bedroom (dd2 will sleep on sofa bed in lounge) and it's costing just over £6k with Jet2. I think they do 2 bed apartments/suites too but this place ticked all the boxes for us

Remmy123 · 18/02/2023 18:01

@Funkyslippers thank you! We have been to Turkey (we love it) but we want to go to a different country this time! Enjoy!

mobear · 18/02/2023 18:29

For the summer, £5k half board, 2 adults 1 child for 2 weeks in Greece. Free flights through Avios. Other than that we’ll have a couple of camping holidays and maybe visit Asia at the end of the year.

£14k holiday to St. Lucia last year for family of 4, August. 18 nights. Mix of 5* hotels and luxury airbnbs, all inclusive, all tours and flights. This year Croatia, £5k including flights and 2 bedroom sea front suite at a top hotel. Expect food, transfers, hotels to be at least another £2k.

Could I ask which hotel in Croatia? We stayed in dubrovnik last year in August and had a great time at Valamar Argosy

CookieDoughKid · 18/02/2023 19:05

@ChocolateHelps Hotel Neptun! Will check out VAlamar!

Autumntimeagain · 19/02/2023 13:22

6.5k for 2 adults, 5 star all inc in Mexico

Funkyslippers · 19/02/2023 21:11

I thought our holiday to Turkey this year was expensive at £6,200: 4* AI, 3 adults & 1 child in 2 X 1 bedroom apartments but I priced up last year's holiday and this year it's £2k more!
