How much is your holiday costing you this year?

I was looking to go to the US for a week but the prices were astronomical and out of my price range. So going to Europe for a week. Destination undecided but looking at flights, accommodation and spending money, I'd still be lucky to spend less than £1000.

Too much.
Canaries, island hopping. 2.7k
Norway 1.6
Scotland 2k

Maybe something else too.

ssd · 01/02/2023 11:23

I now know when I'm stressed and tense and I'm uptight. I don't have 4 holidays a year. I haven't had a 2 week break in 15 years and that was England.
I don't know why i constantly compare myself badly to others when our lives are chalk and cheese.

18 k for Maldives as a couple for 10 days. Flights amex ba companion on business class with a pod both return, 15k beach villa, the rest on activities, room service etc.

@flyingdino we're doing this next year. Which island did you go for?

piedbeauty · 01/02/2023 12:31

£500 for a week in Yorkshire SC in Feb - plus food and expenses
2K for luxury lodge in the Lakes for a week in May - plus food and expenses
About 8k for a train trip round Denmark, Norway and Sweden for 4 in the summer.

£10.5k Maldives for two weeks.

@Elsiebear90 are you going in low season or managed to get a good deal?

bumblebeemumma · 01/02/2023 12:48

Nothing. Can't afford a holiday (despite both work full time in NHS and a skilled job) and haven't had one for nearly 4 years now but even then it was just a 4 night break in a caravan somewhere in the UK.

FKATondelayo · 01/02/2023 13:01

For two adults / two kids a week in Europe in school holidays generally costs £2.5-4k for travel and accommodation. I never book a package and we usually stay in more than one place.

Flights - £1-£1.5k - always fly easyjet/budget

Accommodation - I budget about £1k for 7 nights - usually an airbnb apartment / cottage / villa - we usually stay somewhere pretty nice and near beach / town. I'm good at finding hidden treasures.

Car hire / other activities - £500-£1k

We thought Croatia was beautiful and relatively cheap so am aiming to go to some of the other Adriatic countries this year.

But going abroad (an AI deal on websites like on-the-beach or TUI) is often cheaper than a UK holiday. So I don't really understand why people think it's more economical to stay in the UK than go abroad

HundredMilesAnHour · 01/02/2023 13:32

It's depressing adding up the costs but mine is probably going to work out at about £10k for just me 😫 This is my 50th birthday present to myself that has been delayed several years due to Covid.

I'm going to Australia for 3 weeks. Using Avios for business class flights (but still have to pay the tax) but with nice hotels/AirBNBs, car hire (which is extortionate) and internal flights, it all adds up. I did a similar trip 10 years ago so I guess this is my second trip of a lifetime. I suspect it will be my last so making sure this one counts as financially I won't be able to do this ever again. I have some amazing places booked and I've been paying in dribs and drabs for the past year but it's still going to be quite a financial hit.

Maldives isn’t getting the bookings overall that were expected, they opened up much earlier than many other places post covid. So people are choosing the places that previously weren’t possible.

So, not as expensive atm. Some good deals to be had.

(I work with a client in the lux travel sector)

prinnycessa · 01/02/2023 13:41

Interesting @Greycatclub we were going to book for November but where we wanted to stay increased by £2/3k so we've pushed it back to next year so hopefully prices settle again. Sounds like they have!

bumblebeemumma · 01/02/2023 16:20

@XelaM I might work out cheaper to go abroad for some but sadly not for our family as we have four kids so most places expect you to have two rooms. Two adults, two young teens and two under 5. The cheapest AI on TUI for a week abroad right now is over £4k. We can get 10 days in the UK for half that (but still can't afford £2k)

Supernova23 · 31/01/2023 17:45

Wtf......you can't say that without telling us where it is?! and how long for

Antarctica? I'm going this year, and it really is that expensive!

TomAllenWife · 01/02/2023 16:28

@Supernova23 were currently in Florida
10 days in Disney hotel plus tickets for 3 adults was approx £2600

Flight for 13 yr old was £264
Ours were approx £400 each

So we've done parks, flights & hotel for approx £3500

Wow!!! Never heard Disney in Florida being this cheap

TomAllenWife · 01/02/2023 16:42

@XelaM a friend came a few weeks ago and spent £9k
But it is possible to do on a budget

Plitvice · 01/02/2023 16:45

I've never known and I'll never know!! I wouldn't enjoy it at all if I kept a running total.

nca89 · 01/02/2023 16:48

@TomAllenWife how much are you spending on food a day? That's the bit that's pushing my budget up so high! That and we are doing Universal.

TomAllenWife · 01/02/2023 16:52

We're in universal today, doing it all in one day so £356 for me & DS

Food is expensive but we have breakfast in the room (Walmart shop first day)
Take 2 bottles of water and refill in the parks

After that I'd say $120 per day maybe slight less depending on whether we eat in the park or just get Uber eats when we get back

Chevyimpala67 · 01/02/2023 16:53

UK break in luxury accommodation for 3 adults and 1 child = probably £3k all in Inc fuel, food going out, shopping etc

Next year I'm planning a BIG one 😊

Chevyimpala67 · 01/02/2023 16:54

...in late July

Plitvice · 01/02/2023 16:54

While we are on the topic. My pet hates are:

  1. The belief that people must go away for one fortnight
  2. On a beach holiday, usually AI
  3. To a resort featured in a brochure like Tui
  4. and do something like one tour during the whole time when there is loads to do in that region
  5. I could go on and on but those are the main ones.
nca89 · 01/02/2023 17:04

@TomAllenWife so good to hear it's possible on a budget, we've always been really good at eating cheaply in the US but whenever you read Florida threads it's "oh you need X thousand" a day, I was worried with everything we would struggle to budget, obviously things will be more but I do think we tend to be more frugal than many in the US.

1.What? Do you mean it should be more? How do you get annual leave from work for more than 14 days unless you're a teacher or retired? If you mean it should be less, then I see countless holiday plans for 7 days/long weekend breaks on here and even more in real life.

2.Each to their own, but I personally hate "active holidays" and which are less relaxing than staying at home. I go on holiday to have a break and relax. AI holidays are always the most relaxing proper holidays for me. Self-catering is my idea of hell, as it's basically the same daily drudgery just in a different location.

3.Do you think people have unlimited budgets? Package AI holidays from websites are usually the cheapest options.

4.Again, people don't have unlimited budgets for tours/car hire and walking around sightseeing in the heat is usually not my idea of a relaxing break.

5.Ok.

flyingdino · 01/02/2023 18:10

@prinnycessa we haven't gone yet, we are going after half term but we picked Hilton Amingiri resort. If you're going next year, it will be much cheaper to book before hand (duh to me) as opposed to what we have paid as our timing was last minute. We booked last week lol.
