Feel like I’ve been mugged

Arrived last evening with family for our first holiday in a very very long time, which I have spent over 10k on with an reputable company and it is not remotely what I was expecting 50 meters from A road on one side, no soundproofing, shabby exterior. I understand it’s busy and high summer but I feel cheated.

Did you read the reviews before you booked?

Take a good look this morning - if still unhappy try to speak with a rep - at least to log your disappointment. It might feel better after breakfast once you find the pool and beach.

If you still hate it complain to tour operator.

knittingaddict · 31/07/2022 06:02

Next time:

Read all reviews, especially the most recent ones.
Look at photos carefully.
Use Google maps to check surrounding area.

I've learnt the hard way and this is what we do every time. It vastly reduces the chances of an unpleasant surprise when we get there.

We haven't been disappointed by holiday accommodation in years.

Abroad or in the UK?

pigcon1 · 31/07/2022 07:28

Thanks. I did read the reviews. The part of the complex we are in is separate and not on the photos. I’ve spoken to the rep. There is nowhere to move as all full.

In Greece.

I’m disappointed. I’ll get over it.

That’s a lot of money to spend and end up disappointed 🙁

grafittiartist · 31/07/2022 07:34

Awe- sometimes after a long journey and lots of work to get there, it's a bit of a let down. I hope it improves as you get used to it.

Ylvamoon · 31/07/2022 07:42

Is the room & complex as described? Is everything available and working that was part of the description?

I'm afraid you don't have much to go by.
All you can do is complain and leave a bad review.

Busy raods, flight pass and building sites are just part of life.

Unless if it was described as quiet and secluded, than you'll have a point.

mooonbaby · 31/07/2022 07:46

Using the word mugged is a bit extreme.

pigcon1 · 31/07/2022 10:40

Thanks all. I will do as suggested.

10K for a holiday?! Bloody hell.

BigChesterDraws · 31/07/2022 13:45

They can’t help the road. By “shabby exterior” do you mean the pool area is dirty/dangerous? You have a point there if that’s what you mean. If it’s just that the outside paintwork is peeling and there are some overgrown bushes in the complex, that’s not really a reason for any recourse and shouldn’t spoil your enjoyment of the facilities.

The price is meaningless without knowing how many people and how long you’re staying. 10k for a week for 2 people is not the same as 10k for a fortnight for 8 people.

Whammyyammy · 31/07/2022 14:41

£10k to go to Greece. How many people went? That seems very expensive, for an inexpensive destination

CousinGregg · 31/07/2022 14:51

Why do people insist on commenting on what people spend? You can spend 1k or 100k on a holiday, get over it and stick to the point!

drpet49 · 31/07/2022 14:51

10k for Greece. Extortionate

Palg68 · 31/07/2022 14:52

Can you request a superior room? How disappointing OP.

underneaththeash · 31/07/2022 14:55

If you got the holiday for a U.K. travel agent they have to follow consumer law - therefore it must be ‘as described’ .
is it noisy being in the road - if so. If they’ve used words to say that it’s tranquil/quiet etc that would be a breach for example.
I would start by looking at the write up of the resort on the travel agent’s website and then address each issue in regards to how that may have been breached. Email this to the agent so that there is a record of it and then speak to the rep, explaining again the issues.

i suspect they will find you another room.

lightisnotwhite · 31/07/2022 15:03

@CousinGregg cost is mentioned because £10k in Greece should get you more than £10k in the south of France or even Cornwall which are relatively expensive.

It’s all very well saying read the reviews but I’ve had the exact same holiday made better or worse by the hotel room I’m allocated. Op’s allowed to be disappointed.
Write if off as a crap holiday and don’t expect anything (but don’t share that with the rest of the family).

MissyB1 · 31/07/2022 15:10

Gosh I'm sorry, we have just come back from a high end holiday in Greece. Small family owned hotel in stunning very quiet area, private beach, private jetty for boats, and stunning pool. Blown away by how beautuiful it was.
£6.5k for 2 weeks, half board, icludes cost of flights and our spending money for lunches and drinks.

My point isn't to rub your nose in it, but to say that we booked on personal recommendation and did loads of research.

Happy to recommend the Hotel to anyone who wants it.

10K for a holiday?! Bloody hell.

I know right! How many people did this include? I can see how you can spend 10k actually but Greece wouldn't be my choice unless its Mykonos or some where fancy like that.

Stella Palace in Greece is fabulous. I stayed next door in May.

Nw22 · 31/07/2022 15:15

@MissyB1 i would love to know the hotel name if you don’t mind

MissyB1 · 31/07/2022 15:19

Can I have the hotel recommendation please?

Nw22 · 31/07/2022 15:22

@MissyB1 thank you

Maireas · 31/07/2022 15:24

Why is the shabby exterior a problem?
What's it like on the inside?
Also - how on earth was it £10k?

Theimpossiblegirl · 31/07/2022 15:27

If you pay that much you should be getting something pretty fabulous. Complain to your tour operator now, don't wait until you're home.
Gutted for you. Hope it is still a good holiday.

CottonSock · 31/07/2022 15:32

I'd be expecting something pretty spectacular for that price. But I've never spent that much as for me I think it would never match up to the spend. Could it be the case for you, or is it really actually nasty? I'm not trying to be mean I just know that if I spent so much it would feel easy to be disappointed.
