Feel like I’ve been mugged

Arrived last evening with family for our first holiday in a very very long time, which I have spent over 10k on with an reputable company and it is not remotely what I was expecting 50 meters from A road on one side, no soundproofing, shabby exterior. I understand it’s busy and high summer but I feel cheated.

Ouch. What can they offer you? Any sort of upgrade? Assuming it's all inclusive? Any restaurant upgrades to certain dinning options?

firefly123 · 31/07/2022 15:44

Sorry to hear OP. Often at first it is overwhelming and disappointing. We are in Greece too and spent a lot of money also. Felt so upset when first arrived but after a few days we are enjoying it more. Hope you will too

pigcon1 · 31/07/2022 15:47

It is 10K for four people for one week. Small shower room, shower makes a singing noise. We are away from the body of the resort so I used the communal toilets, no lock on door as a child had previously locked themselves in.. small steps everywhere, chipped tiles. We are enjoying ourselves it’s just not what I expected.

thanks for the other recommendation.

Sorry you were initially disappointed. Good to hear it’s got better. I’m sure we will ease into it too.

We've spent £6k on 10 days in Greece before...2 of us.
It was incredible...and an adult only small hotel.

lechatnoir · 31/07/2022 15:54

Just back from a week also 4 people 2 rooms AI that cost just under £4k to the Canary Islands that are generally more than Greece IME

It was pretty decent- not the 4* it claimed to be but clean, lots of pools/sun beds, not hideously busy, ok location, near the beach, town accessible. Pretty much what I expected for the money. If I'd have paid £10k I'd be expecting a significantly better quality hotel, service, food etc

We had 2 rooms.

lechatnoir · 31/07/2022 15:55

What hotel @pigcon1 ?

Foronenightonly01 · 31/07/2022 15:55

10k for 4 of you? Gosh, I can def understand why you feel mugged - that’s insane. I really hope you manage to enjoy some of it/get some money back/they do something(anything!!) to mitigate.

whynotwhatknot · 31/07/2022 15:55

sounds an awful lot for a weeks stay

£10k for a week in a holiday resort? Communal toilets? You can't be serious.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 31/07/2022 15:59

This happened to me in Egypt. We weren't even allowed to use the pool that all the photos were of. The accommodation was on a separate level with a separate pool area. No explanation for it was given and no changes to rooms were allowed. We met a woman who'd been given the room next to the disco which had a double bed in it instead of a twin for her and her elderly father. They wouldn't swap her room.

We found out later that it had once been two hotels and that's why it was separate, but no explanation why it was being kept separate as was by then all one hotel. The whole hotel was all inclusive too so it wasn't on board basis and there weren't any fancy rooms either.

Hotenoughtoburnasausage · 31/07/2022 16:01

We booked a caravan in Scotland for 400 quid.
Rained as expected..
Nobody disappointed!!
Glad we don't go any further tbh!!

CottonSock · 31/07/2022 16:01

@Johnnysgirl I read it (a second time as I was shocked,) that she perhaps used the hotel communal toilets, like the ones in reception area etc. Not that they have shared toilets

pigcon1 · 31/07/2022 16:03

I’m not going to say where it is - sorry to be a pain but more fool me for getting myself into the situation. Will definitely do more due diligence.

OP posts:
pigcon1 · 31/07/2022 16:03

Yes - that’s correct.

pigcon1 · 31/07/2022 16:05

I’m sorry to hear this. Although it does make me feel like fractions less of a spanner too :)

OP posts:
pigcon1 · 31/07/2022 16:06

Yes - this is our normal summer but Ireland rather than Scotland.

Based on what you have said, it does sound like you have paid way over the odds for what you got. Unless you're rolling in it, that is a lot of money to spend on a mediocre holiday. Check that what you were sold is what you have been given. If not, I would complain.

MarneyM · 31/07/2022 16:11

I’ve just been looking for a holiday and shocked at how expensive they are. Most of the places I would choose are easily £5000 for the two of us for a week.

I’m with you @pigcon1 about expectations. We we’re having a discussion at home about the raised expectation of customers spending a large amount of money for a week away. For thousands I expect perfection and certainly better than I live in at home. I can see many more complaints as hopes are dashed.

( even more shocked to see Mediterranean package holidays for £7,000, £8,000 and even £12,000!).

Maireas · 31/07/2022 16:12

Why are you using communal toilets?
What facilities do you have

pigcon1 · 31/07/2022 16:12

Thanks. We are not rolling in it and I have complained. The resort is full (I’m guessing that’s why we are in some sort of overflow area.). They have made a note centrally.

Elsiid · 31/07/2022 16:13

10k for a week in Greece is v v high. I would be complaining like a dragon if I wasn't happy.

(Ex holiday rep here - squeaky wheel gets the oil and they can always move rooms around with all the arrivals and departures this time of year )

MarneyM · 31/07/2022 16:16

@MissyB1
The hotel link you posted - looks lovely - can you walk to anywhere outside of the hotel - daytime and nighttime for evening meals - or is this very much a hotel based holiday?

Arnaquer · 31/07/2022 16:19

Definitely keep making a fuss , you have spent a lot of money. The rep, reception.
Take photos

I really feel for you, nothing worse than feeling ripped off

Signoramarella · 31/07/2022 16:25

Wow @MissyB1 that looks fabulous. Sorry OP nothing worse than feeling your hols are a let down. I'm just back from a few days in Devon. Spent 900 quid and it was amazing!
