Can a second-year student carry one failed module into final year?

DS has just found he has failed one module in year two.

Uni are not replying to emails just saying someone will be in touch in due course.

Oringally he was told resit in August, if passed continue to finalise year. If fails again then drop out or resit the whole year two again.

DA hates uni. Will not resit year two. Cost would be massive. Time also an issue.

It's one module. What's the chances he can continue in year 3 and maybe just pick up the module as an extra?

Did he fail the resit? It probably depends on the uni but i think as biomedical sciences is an accredited degree, it is likely he will have to resit 2nd year.

You should be able to find out from the degree regs for his particular uni - they’re all different so no one can advise. We’d allow one non-core module of 20 credits or less to be be carried.

It depends on the university and course but if he's been told that before its likely that sadly. DDs course if you fail first year you get one chance to take it again, pass you continue to year 2, fail it again you are out of the university. But then second year there's nothing that counts. When I did it if people failed they could generally change course but depends on university.

Yes failed the resit. Got exactly the same mark twice. Think he was about 5 marks off a pass

Annoying thing was the uni didn't tell him he had to resit and he only found out really late (few days before the exam) with no time to revise. Apparently there were lots of students that didn't turn up for the resit.

Today they've not told him what a second fail means. Said emails have gone out at 12 which he's not had. When they've resent it, all it says is someone will be in touch in due course. He off on holiday on Thursday so needs this sorting before then.

It's so difficult as he's spiralling about it all being for nothing, a waste of time and money, What's the point. You get the idea. And uni are just not there - no helping, no supporting, no guiding or even just answering their emails/phone.

Is it an email or a letter via a student app? Ours are not emails I don't think. They get a letter via the student portal

He found results on student portal but no.other information.

He really needs to sort this himself and should have been all over this. He should try his Personal Tutor.

This will depend on the uni ad your son should contact his personal tutor.
It may be a case of having to resit again but only being able to graduate with a 2.2 (or 3rd) as a maximum or graduating without honours. But, as I said earlier this will depend entirely on the uni

He should put in a claim for extenuating/mitigating circumstances about the lack of notice regarding resit date.

I don't think you can fail a module and graduate without resitting at some point. I did two years of biomed. They were all important modules.

whichever uni it is Google for their undergraduate regulations, assessment handbook. Has he got access to the course handbook? May be in there. Tell him to look at his cohort site on the learning platform.

I'm sorry but if he failed that module, he should not have needed notice to work towards a resit. He should have been on that himself. You've totally lost my sympathy. I don't hold out any hope for final year (big jump up) with that work ethic.

True. And yes while I agree he should have been revising anyway due to knowing he’d need to do a resit it’s worth a shot. I’ve known panels side with students for dafter reasons.

Usually there are only 2 attempts allowed, unless there are exceptional circumstances. Highly unlikely that you can carry a failed module into year 3. This is to do with how many credits can be studied per year, finance, timetable, etc. Plus, what if he fails again? Keep trying the Student Hub or similar. Student's Union might also give advice.

If you fail a resit at my DD’s uni it goes to a progress committee for review.
Options are repeat the year, just sit exams the next year no attendance or asked to leave the course.
Students can get support with the progress committee.
Obviously depends on individual circumstances what outcome is.

I agree but no one is responding. He's emailed the module tutor today, he's moved on and no contact details for replacement. There is no personal tutor . When he tried them at the end of year one for help with options etc was basically told to go away. He's emailed the Faculty, they've said it's the assessment team. The assessment team have said they emailed at 12 noon (didn't receive it). They've resent that at 4.45 and all it says is that someone will be in touch in due course. He has asked the assessment team to confirm the email address they've been using as like I've said he has had NO information about the first fail, the resit, the results or now the what next. They are utterly terrible.

He's panicking he's wasted £20k and two years for nothing. Or he can waste another £20k and another two years to finish a degree he's not enjoying and wished he'd not started.

He's spiralling and I'm his mum. He's struggling and upset. Do you really expect me to say "crack on and sort you own shit "?

We've asked them to confirm the email address it has been sent to. It's funny they've replied to his email but not forwarded on the first one as evidence of it being sent previously.

He's pretty good on life admin/emails as he works part time so regularly checks his email. He's also checked the spam folder.

There may be an option to resit alongside year 3 or take a year put and resit that module. However it sounds like uni simply is not for him and maybe he should cut his losses and leave,

Could he go into uni and talk to someone face to face? Sometimes easier to sort out that way and get an immediate answer. I’m going back 25 years though!
