To ask about Law at the university of York

DD got 7 9s and 3 8s at GCSE and got an Oxford offer for Law. She was predicted 4 A. She's won loads of national essay competitions and has generally built her identity around being a high flyer. Come results day - two As and two Bs and Oxford have rejected her. She's set to go to the University of York as her insurance choice but she's feeling really down about everything and is pessimistic about her future. In History she is two marks off the A and in Politics she's just one mark off an A so waiting for a review of marking but not expecting anything to change.

Please tell me positives about York. I'm stressing and so is she. She's feeling like her future is gone. I'm so upset for her. She's honestly such a clever and articulate young woman. She's saying her A Levels aren't good enough for Vac schemes and training contracts and she's not at all excited for uni.

That is wonderful news @Fatsnowflake. Has your DD had her history mark back yet?

Not yet but the main thing is she has her place! It is terrible how inaccurate marking can be though!

I’m so thrilled for both of you ☺️ Great to see a happy ending!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 28/08/2026 16:41

Good news at last.

Lotsalotsagiggles · 28/08/2026 17:32

Has she been able to secure some accommodation?

Has she been able to secure some accommodation?

They have accommodation for her and they sort everything so it won't be an issue thankfully. All first years are on the college site as well.

Wow, I bet she's mega excited

So they start soon?

FancyKeyboard · 28/08/2026 18:16

Wonderful news, I am so happy for her (and you)

Fatsnowflake · 28/08/2026 18:33

They start October 6th.

I'm thrilled - thanks for all the good wishes. This isn't the outcome I envisaged but it's great news.

Great it’s all over. 3 x A and a B and an Oxford law with German place is a fantastic achievement. One blessing of the late Oxford start is she has a month to get ready. It’s been a real roller coaster for her I bet it will take a few days to sink in.
Do remember to cancel York accommodation, someone may be grateful for that.

Fatsnowflake · 29/08/2026 12:14

Thank you - we can finally get excited now and start shopping!

Have you put in both the History and Politics papers for a review? Both were pretty close! Obviously don’t get her hopes up but I would have thought that there is at least a reasonable chance that one of the grades will go up? I am crossing my fingers for her! 🤞

We are in a similar situation. My DS also missed his firm offer by one grade (not Oxford though) - he needed A star A A and got A A A. Missed an A star in History (OCR) by a few marks and we are also having a review. In funny limbo where trying to get head around going to his insurance place and get excited but knowing the door is still open to the firm Uni if his grade goes up. Hoping we know one way or another asap as the uncertainty is not helpful.

Let is know what happens with the review.

How has it gone for your Ds?

Ah his mark didn’t go up unfortunately.

He’s still disappointed as he was so so close and he really worked hard for it but thems the breaks.

He is feeling better about losing his firm Uni (Durham) though and is looking forward to starting Bristol Uni soon. Sorting the accommodation has been a rollercoaster to say the least but it’s done now so we can finally start planning and buying stuff!

Bristol is a brilliant university - I hope he has an amazing time!
