To ask about Law at the university of York

DD got 7 9s and 3 8s at GCSE and got an Oxford offer for Law. She was predicted 4 A. She's won loads of national essay competitions and has generally built her identity around being a high flyer. Come results day - two As and two Bs and Oxford have rejected her. She's set to go to the University of York as her insurance choice but she's feeling really down about everything and is pessimistic about her future. In History she is two marks off the A and in Politics she's just one mark off an A so waiting for a review of marking but not expecting anything to change.

Please tell me positives about York. I'm stressing and so is she. She's feeling like her future is gone. I'm so upset for her. She's honestly such a clever and articulate young woman. She's saying her A Levels aren't good enough for Vac schemes and training contracts and she's not at all excited for uni.

She absolutely loved it. They really looked after her. It was a great experience for her and I think she's got some good contacts there for vac schemes - though she's adamant she wants to work in London.

That’s great and all credit to her getting on with it with all this going on in background. The experience will help when she’s applying for insight schemes in yr1.

Lotsalotsagiggles · 26/08/2026 13:36

I would definitely chase as the longer it goes onz the longer accomodation will be harder to find

I hope the nudge helps give some kind of an idea either way

easterb · 26/08/2026 14:00

I think the colleges have ample accommodation and so I suspect you’d be ok on that front. But presumably York is asking you to commit to accommodation / registration etc imminently so she really needs to know where she stands asap. Psychologically too she needs an answer one way or another. It’s Wednesday now - they really should have been able to make a decision in that time!

Fatsnowflake · 26/08/2026 14:45

She has put her name down for accommodation at York already but I think we can get out of it before term starts.

The college is one of the biggest, richest colleges so accommodation at Oxford wouldn't be an issue I don't think. She's emailed again for an update so fingers crossed we get clarity tomorrow.

@Fatsnowflake Oxford over offer like everyone else. Fingers crossed but wealth does not magic up a room.

Yes that's true but they did say they can offer deferred places. And I would hope they wouldn't sit on this for a week only to say - sorry we haven't space. I would be rightfully pissed off and so would dd.

@Fatsnowflake Yes, a deferred place would help.

easterb · 28/08/2026 09:13

Really hoping you get an answer today - they absolutely cannot leaving you hanging over the Bank Holiday weekend!

Fatsnowflake · 28/08/2026 10:03

It's awful. I've been having really vivid dreams about her being rejected over and over again!

I was hoping it would be an update. Did she get a response to her email on Wednesday? I think over a week is a very long time for them still to be leaving in limbo.

She got in!! Law with German

That's amazing news, so pleased for her and for you! Big celebrations. Can't believe her paper went up by 10 marks - I always wish I had sent DS history paper for remark as in the three papers he got A* A *C - the C was wild! His teacher said it was badly marked. He got A overall and it got him to his first choice so he wasn't bothered (A,A A). He has just graduated from a Master in Politics from Uni of Manchester though so not done too badly!
Wishing her all the luck in the world!

Araminta1004 · 28/08/2026 14:57

Congrats @Fatsnowflake - and to your DD!

I am glad she can still do the German too.

emptygoosenest · 28/08/2026 15:00

Congratulations

catownerofthenorth · 28/08/2026 15:01

Oh oh oh! I have been checking and checking! How marvellous. York’s loss but your gain! Bloody well done you, you’ve really hung in there

catownerofthenorth · 28/08/2026 15:03

And I agree re the paper. It’s a total disgrace. If that had been done correctly she would have had the joy on results day. But doesn’t matter the road you take, as long as you get there.

Crinkle77 · 28/08/2026 15:17

I can't comment on doing Law at York but I totally cocked up my A Levels so couldn't go to my chosen uni's. Instead I got a place at a local small university college (it now has its own degree awarding powers and has massively expanded) through clearing. At the time it seemed like the end of the world. However I loved it there, the course was great and I made loads of friends. I came out with a 2:1 which I was thrilled about and ended up doing an MA at one of my original uni choices that I failed to get in to for my UG degree. In the end everthing worked out, probably for the better!

ProfessorLayton1 · 28/08/2026 15:22

Amazing news @Fatsnowflake congrats to you and your done!

HewasH2O · 28/08/2026 15:26

Fabulous news. It will all seem very real when she gets her room key (absolutely nothing to do to book accommodation - rooms are all the same cost & ensuite, allocated by her College) and you see her name on the stairway board. DM me if you have any queries. 😉

Moreholidaysthanjudithchalmers · 28/08/2026 15:38

Fantastic news. You both deserve to have a lovely weekend celebrating.

IThinkNotBabyPuppy · 28/08/2026 15:43

That’s great news! You can now relax and enjoy the long weekend 😊

Fatsnowflake · 28/08/2026 15:44

I really am over the moon!

She loves German too and it was a total travesty what happened with the noisy exam room. I'm glad her college have understood that!
