So a while ago I saw a few threads on York and one of the mums suggested that we start a sort of Yorkies thread once everyone had results and knew where they were going.

I have a DD going who will be in James college

Anyone else?

Washing has been done, online shop has been done, singing auditions done and seemingly every club in York has been visited. Lectures and tutorials been attended. A spot of freshers flu as well. But all seems to be good so far- am sure there will be a blip at some point!

I heard that pretty much everyone came down with a cold by the end of the first week!

wizzler · 27/09/2025 08:44

Spoke to Dd yesterday and she seems very happy. She says lectures are quite full on, and she has a full timetable in comparison to some of her flatmates but she seems to be coping. She’s managed a couple of expeditions to the supermarket . So far so good

@londoncalling1989

Did you do the online shop for them? I did and DS was grateful but I am undecided whether I should have or not.

No- they did it themselves. ( did get a few messages asking questions though!). Did a Tesco shop. I offered to do an Ocado shop for her as get free delivery but she said Ocado would be way too embarrassing!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 27/09/2025 18:21

Yes, Ocado would be a bit cringy🤣. Oh well I have shown the way! Up to him now.

BlueBirdOnAWire · 28/09/2025 14:31

yes my YP has had freshers flu too, seems like more than half of them have been poorly

but other than that, all seems to be going great guns, loving it enjoying it, making friends, getting stuck in

still feeling this is a such a great place to go

BlueBirdOnAWire · 28/09/2025 14:31

When are you all planning on visiting ?

wizzler · 28/09/2025 17:02

Dd has a reading week at the end of October. She is undecided whether to come home or not. If she doesn’t I’ll pop up to York and raid her out for lunch ( I’m only 90 mins away)

SockFluffInTheBath · 28/09/2025 18:30

We visited yesterday morning as we were passing York to go somewhere else. Took her for breakfast and food shopping. She’s doing ok considering it was her gran’s funeral last Monday.

GoodNamesOnly · 28/09/2025 19:31

We also visited for the day yesterday - we are an hour away by train. We had originally planned to go after 3 weeks, but then we couldn't do next weekend and 4 weeks felt too much (for me!). However, now I think we might have gone too early.

The benefit of being fairly near is that we didn't need to stay over, but DD didn’t want us going to her flat while everyone was home, as no other parents had visited yet, so we ended up hanging around in the city for longer than felt easy. In a way, if we had a hotel we could have just gone back there. Not sure what to do next time. Maybe just book for a shorter day, ie lunch and a bit of a wander. I do think sometimes it would be nice to stay over though, as then we could all be a bit more leisurely (York hotels seem expensive though!).

I am also worrying that I have been texting her too much when it is not required. Finding it hard to let go!

GoodNamesOnly · 28/09/2025 19:33

Sorry to hear about the funeral @SockFluffInTheBath . That is a lot for you to have going on at once, especially if it is your mum x

londoncalling1989 · 28/09/2025 20:16

DD looked at me as if I was mad when I said I could pop up on the train for a day if she wanted! We’re in London but quick ish on train. She says she’ll probably come home for reading week but will go back for Halloween!

Am loving bumping into all your DC as I shop over the last two weeks. Groups, particularly of young men, wandering around with a trolley and their shopping list, having long discussions about what they can and can’t afford.

That was me, 40 plus years ago, came, fell in love with York, wandered the globe and then came back to the only place I will ever think of as home.

I love York and we love our Uni students. It feels strange over the Summer when they disappear and fab when they all return !!

oh that sounds quite creepy and likely killed this thread.

Any one else got anything to say from the perspective of a parent?

Trying to work out the bus route to Clifton to go to Dunelm to buy a cuddle cushion and heated airer!

Dearover · 01/10/2025 21:47

Have any of your DC signed up as reps for open days, web chats with applicants and tour guides yet? It can provide a nice little income stream for treats

Oh, I am really sorry. It wasn’t meant to be creepy.

It is just lovely when the students all return and our city comes alive again.

That is what I was trying to say,

It’s not creepy. It’s nice seeing young people find their way and remember back to when you were that young person.

Please don’t worry,

I have apologised if I did sound creepy and you have apologised.

All done as far as I am concerned.

I have lots of local tips if needed, but I am not volunteering them for fear of intruding on the thread. Happy to help if anyone needs local info.
