So a while ago I saw a few threads on York and one of the mums suggested that we start a sort of Yorkies thread once everyone had results and knew where they were going.

I have a DD going who will be in James college

Anyone else?

Apparently some flat mates are hooking up already, on the first day of Freshers Week. I wonder how that works out when you have to share a kitchen for an entire academic year...😂

Dearover · 14/09/2025 16:27

I met someone on our first day. We had rooms next to each other. It will be 36 years in Nov and we had our 31st wedding anniversary last month. 😀

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 14/09/2025 18:14

Dropped off today. What an amazing place to start University.

That’s so lovely.

yeah, it doesn't always end in a 30 year marriage!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 17/09/2025 07:57

All all the YP’s there now? York really feels like a marvellous place to go to University. Are you all okay?

BlueBirdOnAWire · 17/09/2025 08:14

Did some arrive on fri and Sat too ? I dropped my YP sunday

feeling amazing

HelliboreHelen · 17/09/2025 08:25

@Ritasueandbobtoo9 It is currently freshers week. I think the only students not on campus yet may be some overseas students arriving on the w'end.

londoncalling1989 · 17/09/2025 08:31

Dropped off on Friday- so far so good (although not much communication!)

did the different colleges have different drop off days ?

londoncalling1989 · 17/09/2025 09:40

@BlueBirdOnAWire- yes they did. And also depended on blocks. Half of DDs college was Friday and the other half Saturday.

HelliboreHelen · 18/09/2025 18:11

So my DD phoned me from York today. She said 2 boys went to hospital yesterday after a rugby "initiation". One threw up and passed out on the grass outside her college and the other one LOST A FINGER in a door, in town.

Honestly.

LinkEEDin · 18/09/2025 20:53

Yes I just heard this from my DS! Apparently the boy that lost a finger was tied to a third year student and had to drink two drinks for everyone.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 18/09/2025 21:45

Well that is pretty disgusting and obviously life changing for this boy.

I am really shocked. I was looking at the York instagram and it was all "three shots for 6.5 pounds etc"

I thought this generation was less alcoholic. It seems like the freshers week is actively encouraging really unhealthy behaviors.

Dearover · 18/09/2025 23:19

It's polarised and has been at most universities for years. They will be the afternoon tea and board games clubs and the sports societies (some of which have better reputations then others). Don't assume it's just the male dominated sports clubs either.

At DD's previous uni second years were given the job of being sober angels. They had a horrendous incident in her college which left her very distressed afterwards, but there were also lots of pleas to help with missing room keys, lost phones etc. Unfortunately many still get wrapped up in the excitement and perceived freedom for the first time.

At York she was older and the post grads have all been there done that already.

Raindrops432 · 19/09/2025 15:31

Interesting article in last weekend's Times by Owen Slot all about University sports clubs' initiations. UoYRFC got mentioned several times for their antics. It was particularly sad to read that several thousand students nationwide are put off playing their sport at university because of the initiations. My DD is sporty and has joined appropriate sports clubs at York (not rugby) but is worried about the amount of drinking that appears to be involved in initiations and socials - she does drink but is not interested in drinking to excess, whatever the occasion. I agree with a PP that there does still seem to be encouragement or an "expectation" that drinking will be involved in sports social events.

Christ I am old. It was trebles for a quid when I went to uni

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 19/09/2025 18:07

I looked at an old picture of a pub/club and I can see pints for a pound and three meals for £7. I don’t think any body did shots!

I remember a pound a pint, bit more expensive these days. DD has done a few social events, made friends with the girls in her flat, seems to be settling ok.

KicksPremium · 26/09/2025 07:38

Anyone got any updates at the end of this week? Mine seems to be getting on with it.

SockFluffInTheBath · 26/09/2025 11:30

Lectures have been easy intro sessions, shops have been found, making friends, seems happy enough.

LinkEEDin · 26/09/2025 18:41

Mine seems happy too. He loves York as a place and seems to be finding his feet with everything else.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 26/09/2025 23:24

I’m not sure mines moved a lot from their room but allegedly he did.
