So a while ago I saw a few threads on York and one of the mums suggested that we start a sort of Yorkies thread once everyone had results and knew where they were going.

I have a DD going who will be in James college

Anyone else?

I went to York uni in the eighties and loved it. When Dd and I catch up I love that she’s going to the same pubs that I went to . Trying hard not to project my experience onto her… it’s a different place now, my college ( Alcuin) is practically unrecognisable, and Campus East didn’t exist in those days

Me too. Except I think they pulled the John Bull down and made it a carpark after I left in the early 90s.

Interesting article in last weekend's Times by Owen Slot all about University sports clubs' initiations. UoYRFC got mentioned several times for their antics. It was particularly sad to read that several thousand students nationwide are put off playing their sport at university because of the initiations. My DD is sporty and has joined appropriate sports clubs at York (not rugby) but is worried about the amount of drinking that appears to be involved in initiations and socials - she does drink but is not interested in drinking to excess, whatever the occasion. I agree with a PP that there does still seem to be encouragement or an "expectation" that drinking will be involved in sports social events.

I agree that it's sad about sports players being put off University sports because of nobby prehistoric initiation rituals. Interestingly I understand that there are 2 or 3 excellent 1st year rugby players that don't want to play for the University of team specifically because of these initiation rituals.

So you now have the ridiculous situation of the "University of" rugby teams not getting the best talent possible because some rugby players actually just want to play excellent rugby rather than time travel to 1970s nobby rugby rituals.

That said York rugby rituals are tame in comparison to some other Universities.

My YP seems to be bedding into York. Likes the wildlife on the campus!

That's good to hear, mine is also bedding in well too.
Often get photos of the lake and trees etc
Feel lucky they are in such a nice green environment

GoodNamesOnly · 15/10/2025 17:54

Yes, mine seems to be settling well too. Not that many pictures of York, but lots of the meals they have made.

Now that I have stopped worrying about settling in, I find myself worrying about where they are going to live next year and who with. I saw this today about finding accommodation for next year. It seems so soon! www.instagram.com/p/DP0vaK6gXZS/?igsh=MXZmNWthd3Bqd3Z3ZA==

We always find something to worry about don't we

They have to think about next years accommodation so early don't they
Wonder if it ends up cheaper or dearer on average

Lemintonic · 15/10/2025 22:02

As a 2nd year parent, we went through quite a lot of stress wirth her accomodation. Long story short (!) the first one was sorted then there was a big friendship fall out...second one seemed settled but landlord decided on another group...she's now in a lovely (but bloody pricey- £800 a month each for 6 of them) house very near the campus..
All of her group struggle with the rent and are either working or looking very hard for jobs. Some of them have even chosen to commute from Hull.

BlueBirdOnAWire · 16/10/2025 01:11

Landlords must be killing it surely

SockFluffInTheBath · 16/10/2025 11:09

2nd year house stress underway. There was a big group of them, then some have decided they want to live as a smaller group in a smaller house without DD and a few others. She was very upset on the phone at 10pm last night, but have shown her she has options and choices so she’s a bit happier now.

Oh that’s a bit mean surely the more the merrier

what’s the most common number for sharers ?
like how many typically share together ?

Talkaboutcats · 16/10/2025 12:33

I think the push to get next year's housing sorted is very pressured. When I was there I was able to make that decision around March when I knew who I got on with and who I could cope with living with.

I think it felt mean, but trying to be rational about it it’s very early to be choosing who you live with and maybe they all got a bit swept up? I don’t know. DD has 2 other sets of people who have asked if she wants to share, so she’ll be ok.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 16/10/2025 17:32

This happened to my dd last year. There were 8 I think. The group split due to differences in price ranges.

Raindrops432 · 16/10/2025 17:52

My DD is resisting the temptation to get swept up in the flat share mania due to some of the stories she has heard about people committing to sharing with people they then grow apart from or fall out with. She doesn't want to commit to sharing with people she has only known for 4 weeks, however great everything seems at the moment. She has options regarding who she can share with but is keeping her powder dry at present. It helps, apparently, that she doesn't want to be in a large house share as the bigger properties do go quickly, she has been told.

SockFluffInTheBath · 16/10/2025 18:21

FFS DD has just gone to the onsite medical centre. Told her she has strep throat and needs antibiotics but they have run out and won’t get more until the middle of next week. Wouldn’t give a script to take somewhere else. What on earth 😡

she should be registered with a GP and be able to get antibiotics there, but if not just tell her to walk into A&E and she can get them on the spot

SockFluffInTheBath · 16/10/2025 18:55

Agree about registering with a GP, but she’s ignored the list of sensible things we sent her off with. Can you go to A&E for a sore throat? 😬

you can go for a strep test / covid test so yes

Well that's the best attitude have I guess, being upset won't do any good and like you say she's got other offers anyway

SockFluffInTheBath · 17/10/2025 11:00

Thanks @Talkaboutcats . She’s on her way to the urgent care unit at the hospital right now, so fingers crossed they can give her something. She’s so upset because she feels so rotten, and she’s not a wuss. I’m thinking about getting in the car and go up and get her.

SockFluffInTheBath · 17/10/2025 15:42

Confirmed strep, no antibiotics available onsite (!) but told which pharmacy to go to. She’s back at her flat now tucked up
in bed. I’ve found her a couple of GP practices taking on new patients that have surgeries near the uni, so hopefully easier if there’s a next time.

Parents almost always have to act as guarantors for their YP. Some landlords insist on joint & several liability, so you could be asked to prove you have assets available to cover many times more than your own YP's monthly rent. Friends from overseas might need to pay their entire rent up front.

The more the dirtier too. Not to mention the debates over who should get which room, especially if they are different sizes or on multiple floors. The arguments are endless before they have even moved in.

3-4 is an ideal size and there are so many more properties of this size available throughout the year. The scrum is often for huge houses, essentially sharing with complete strangers or the couple who got together at freshers, are madly in love this week but break up after Christmas.
