So a while ago I saw a few threads on York and one of the mums suggested that we start a sort of Yorkies thread once everyone had results and knew where they were going.

I have a DD going who will be in James college

Anyone else?

Yes, already had drama and a subsequent change of group. I’ve told her we’ll give her the same as we’re paying for her halls this year, and if she wants/needs more she needs to find it herself.

Halls are generally 44 weeks

tenancies all 52

no one should sign anything till after Christmas

hundreds of miserable kids stuck in houses with people they hate

so many rooms offered on line

wait wait wait

BlueBirdOnAWire · 24/11/2025 07:45

when we went on the open day, they strongly advised all the YP to get accommodation sorted by Xmas, otherwise you be struggling to find anywhere
and paying over the odds

seemed a bit extreme to me but that was the advice strongly given

There’s lots of people on the parents Facebook group saying their DCs sorted accommodation after Christmas and all was fine.

redskydelight · 24/11/2025 09:40

Re accommodation - it gets released in waves. There will still be more to come.
If your DC wants a specific size house in a specific location, then, yes, earlier the better.

If they are more flexible, or not sure who they will share with, they can wait until later.

If they are happy to share with one or more students they don't know (yet) there are places in houses coming up right left and centre all the way to next September (and beyond).

York is not a place where there will not be a space anywhere.

That wasn’t university staff

the official line is don’t rush take your time

OldYorkMum · 24/11/2025 14:46

York accom as experienced by my DC. Halls - fine. Year 1, the common scramble to create a group, find a house, cope with dropouts, offer spares to those who have not found anything; move in and then realise that it’s not the best combination of people, but suck it up and swear to do better for Y3. Y3, received several invitations to share but being pickier, realise none will suit. Make it known amongst wider friendship group that they are happy to fill a random room. End up with a lovely group where someone was doing a year out. The end.

Lesson: don’t be rushed, there are always rooms going, be brave and move in with others and you may be surprised. Oh and look out for others that are struggling and offer them your extra room.

Is she sorted for a house now @SockFluffInTheBath? Mine has signed for somewhere and just waiting to see it has all gone through.

Not long now until they are back home for Christmas! Can't wait.

No, they’re looking online to get an idea of what’s out there for the money. Not been to see any yet. There’s only 4 of them, and they don’t seem to have any restrictive requirements so it shouldn’t be too hard (fingers crossed).

Not saying to true

Anybody know what a young man wears to a formal?

londoncalling1989 · 30/11/2025 19:31

I think there is a bit of a mix- you can try and find pictures on instagram for previous ones to get an idea.

OldYorkMum · 30/11/2025 21:16

Collared shirt, tie (charity shop or Primark), smartest trousers they possess ie no joggers! Shoes if they have them, or smartest trainers. No need to overthink it.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 30/11/2025 22:18

Thanks! I was thinking it was a suit!

londoncalling1989 · 30/11/2025 23:36

Some do wear suits and some even black tie. Just looking at DDs college’s winter formal pics from last year- lots of suits but lots not in suits!

OldYorkMum · 01/12/2025 05:01

If they had a suit for 6th form or prom and happen to have it with them, great. If not, that’s fine too.

Grown out of Prom suit as a late bloomer sadly.

Everyone looking forward to their adult children home for Christmas, not long now

SockFluffInTheBath · 02/12/2025 20:09

Yes @BlueBirdOnAWire coming home Friday next week. She found out yesterday her lectures finish next Tuesday, but already got her train ticket so going to stay for the last few days.

GreatCreatures · 03/12/2025 08:01

DC all signed up for house share next year. Agree it seems very early, but DC relieved to have got that issue out of the way.

Oh not long now !! Mine is coming home next weekend too, as shes got a job up there now too, then coming back to her normal job at home 😂

first Sunday back we going to a lovely pub for a big fat roast, then to London for a couple of days on a jolly so I can’t wait

she’s actually getting a lift home as well, well to somewhere not that far that she will be able to get a short train ride home from

half sad, half happy as I wanted to see York at Christmas time but we’ve got three years so don’t have to do it all at once
save a long journey, I guess

looking forward to exploring more of York and Yorkshire next year

she’s got her house sorted too

Do you feel like times gone fast ? I’m Suprised to say it’s gone faster than I thought it would

SockFluffInTheBath · 03/12/2025 17:47

Yes it has gone quickly.

DD and friends also signed for a house today. Got the location they wanted, and it looks nice. Not the most expensive they were looking at either, phew 😅

GreatCreatures · 04/12/2025 06:59

We're not quite sure when DC will return, I know teaching doesn't start until 9th Feb, although would expect them to be there for the Refreshers the week before. They don't have anything they need to do in person for assessment. Have read that it's really, really quiet until Welcome week.
