So a while ago I saw a few threads on York and one of the mums suggested that we start a sort of Yorkies thread once everyone had results and knew where they were going.

I have a DD going who will be in James college

Anyone else?

It was great to see my DD for a couple of days / nights this week. She told me that 16 people in her flat share 3 fridges and it's so territorial that she has no space to use whatsoever. She put an apple on a shelf and someone shouted at her. She also said that people come in late and leave the kitchen filthy then other people point the finger at everyone. It sounds quite stressful at times, a bit Lord of the Flies too, with one girl telling everyone "I can't believe you cooked that, it looks terrible, don't you know how to do it properly" but on loop - so she says it to everyone about everything.

I'd be tempted to move out with this kind of thing going on but DD seems to take it in her stride, so good for her, at least.

What she shares with 16 people ?

It's a common set up at York - there are two flats of 8 each side of the kitchen, so 16 people sharing the kitchen. There's generally enough space/cookers/fridges etc though - sounds like GirtyPlunder's DC has been unlucky with those she share with

This is not a chat thread with your bessie, its a thread for parents with first year students at York.

Do you have a 1st year at York?

And I was responding to her first post, not the last one.

@GirtyPlunder this one?

I guess these days it might feel unusual as lots accommodation is divided into flats or floors. I know my dd had 4 on her floor but 2 kitchens shared between the whole block. So between 12.

SockFluffInTheBath · 03/11/2025 16:26

I didn’t realise there were halls where 16 people shared a kitchen. Potential for carnage.

To be fair, they do have built-in catering on site, but only breakfast and dinner, monday-friday. The fridges and kitchens are for lunches and w'end meals, potentially.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 03/11/2025 16:31

I know my dd would get stressed by it.
other dd had to share with more and she would have a blitz every now and then otherwise it became horrific.

That makes sense. Having said that my dd had 3 fridges too but in uncatered.

I shared a house with 24 people and two kitchens, non catered. It was a bit like Lord of the Flies, 16 people is too many to build a nice group.

Mine was similar. 11 rooms, 1 kitchen, 2 shower rooms and 2 toilets. 1 fridge and tiny cupboards.

But I think dorm style halls are better than smaller flats. Get to meet more people.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 04/11/2025 02:20

@Ritasueandbobtoo9 your user name has reminded me that my friend and I went to see it and we were aghast at the film!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 04/11/2025 06:33

@Pinkfluffypencilcase

I know, it is shocking but of it’s time. It reminds me of 1980’s. The way they walk, the shouting, the brothers on the bikes, pervy men, the casual violence.

OldYorkMum · 04/11/2025 08:40

Mine was in one of the original catered halls and the flat was big (can’t remember how many) and they had a big kitchen and a small kitchen. But also had access to all 4 floors. Which made for some interesting mingling! Actually much more social than, say, a 5 bed cluster flat behind a locked door.

It is. I agree. Again one of those films billed as a comedy but not really. It’s autobiographical isn’t it?

Think my dd was in same halls. She preferred using the upstairs loo as it was nicer than the one on her floor. When I went to visit her I could see why. Her one was tiny. I like a bit of room in my cubicles.

OldYorkMum · 04/11/2025 17:45

lol, yes the shower and the loo were both like cupboards!!

GoodNamesOnly · 12/11/2025 07:20

Anyone else stressing about year 2 accommodation? It's so expensive and the decisions feel so rushed, with people they have only known a few weeks. Mine is looking for a big group house and there seems a real scramble for those. I understand why, because I don't think they know well enough to know who their closer friends will be yet, but I don't think it would be the worst thing if the group split in two.

SockFluffInTheBath · 12/11/2025 17:43

Yes, already had drama and a subsequent change of group. I’ve told her we’ll give her the same as we’re paying for her halls this year, and if she wants/needs more she needs to find it herself.

GoodNamesOnly · 23/11/2025 19:14

Is she sorted for a house now @SockFluffInTheBath? Mine has signed for somewhere and just waiting to see it has all gone through.

Not long now until they are back home for Christmas! Can't wait.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 23/11/2025 20:53

My DS just wants a girlfriend!!
