Leaving home and moving to uni countdown

Is there a thread for this? In a matter of weeks many of us will be packing our DCs off to university. I am thrilled for my DS who has worked so hard and is so excited to start university life. However, I am also dreading it in equal measure and know that emotionally this transition will be tough for me.

How is everyone?

How have you managed to raise a child to adulthood who can’t cook or change a bed? You know that’s your actual job, right? Amazing.

Neither I nor my husband could cook when we left home. We learned. It's not rocket science, and they'll learn when they want to - and they now have the internet and YouTube to help. DD had barely cooked anything when she left. She was catered for first year, and is now in her second year house trying out recipes before term starts.

mondaytosunday · 20/08/2025 09:45

I think you’ll find your kids are much more resourceful than their actions at home may lead you to believe! My DD definitely reverts when at home when I know she’s perfectly capable of adulting when at uni.
Also whatever equipment they bring to go in shared spaces (kitchen) just think of it as a donation as it quite likely to get broken/stolen/lost.

report back if you find a mattress topper-- on my list as well!

Found some great looking mattress toppers for 3/4 beds on Amazon. Good price, too.

Dunelm have cotton fitted sheets in 3/4 size.

Then we’re going to get a quilt in regular double.

SockFluffInTheBath · 20/08/2025 16:05

@piscofrisco that’s an awful lot to deal with at once. I’m very sorry for your loss.

Ds is off in September too.
He's my last and we're going to have an empty nest!

Everintroverte · 20/08/2025 20:56

Hello all, my DD is off to Lancaster at the end of September. I'm so proud of her, she's worked so hard to get the results she wanted and get on to the course she wanted.

I am dreading it, she's my oldest and we have a close relationship. I'm going to miss her so much. I have been prepping myself so hoping that drop off day itself can be a happy, positive day. We are moving also so worried that when she comes home it won't feel like 'home' as she won't have spent much time there before going off to uni.

MummyChocolateMonster · 20/08/2025 21:11

I’m in this boat. DD is off to uni on 17 September - about 4 hours away.
She’s a bit apprehensive about the distance but excited too.
I'm getting organised - have the mattress topper (panda), duvet and pillows. Also a door stopper. Good idea about shopping from our kitchen and getting new for us.
My DD can change a bed, do washing, clean, and has a part-time job that she’ll leave when she heads off. She’s been resistant to learning to cook despite my best efforts. She can use an air fryer Blush
I’ve also booked her for the meningitis B vaccine, they only got childhood meningitis vaccines of Men ACWY at this age (babies since 2015 get Men B) and so we’ve had to book privately. It’s not compulsory but it’s a good idea for uni students living in close proximity.
I’m emotional about it all but we’re close and I’m confident she’ll be in regular contact. We’ll visit to supplement her trips home.

DD is also going to a Scottish uni, but we’re just an hour away.

I’ve got pen and paper in the kitchen and adding stuff to the list as I remember it. It’s getting long! Everyone so far has said they need a mattress topper. Having seen the mattresses in halls. I’d agree! But it’s a 3/4 double bed which makes it trickier.

Just buy a double and tuck it under

Cakeandusername · 20/08/2025 21:15

Mine had a double topper on a 3/4 bed in Scottish halls and it was fine plus double fitted sheet.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 28/08/2025 19:22

I’d like to join please. Dd is moving out for uni in just over 2 weeks. My house is piled high in boxes and packages. Dd has been abroad for the last 3 months and is only getting back a week before she moves!

i think we’ve bought too much stuff and am worried about fitting it all in the car, I think she might have to catch the train and meet us there 🤣

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 28/08/2025 19:25

Amazon definitely do 3/4 toppers and fitted sheets, Dd has a 3/4 double in her bedroom now. I’ve had to buy double sized stuff for her new flat as she’ll have a full size double.

Ineedcoffeenow · 28/08/2025 19:31

Found a nice 3/4 double topper on Amazon at a good price. We’ll use a double fitted sheet and tuck it under. We’ve got most of everything now. She leaves in 8 days.

Do you mind sharing a link please. My DD wants a double topper but I wonder if it may be cumbersome to pack up when going away for the holidays…

ilovebagpuss · 28/08/2025 22:36

My DD doesn't start until the end of Sept! I think it's too long, she wants to get going now and the waiting makes it worse almost sort of dragging out the worry (me) and nervous anticipation for her.
She has some work shifts In the week but is finding it hard to fill her days.
I just feel for her sort of hanging about. Her closest friend has a boyfriend and is having a gap year and there doesn't seem to be much socialising.
I don't know it just seems a long old trek!

Redbookworm · 28/08/2025 22:39

My DS is off in 2 weeks to Chichester. He is my youngest of 3 and only one to go to uni. I’m going to miss him terribly as he a great kid, helpful, funny and kind. I’m so excited for him but so worried too!

Temporaryanonymity · 28/08/2025 22:46

My son is off to Aber! He will thrilled to hear about this.

Dd2 is in 3rd year at Chi, doing musical theatre. It's a good size in big enough to find your tribe but not so big you can get lost.
He'll love it.

Redbookworm · 28/08/2025 22:49

Ah thank you! My DS is doing triple threat at Bognor campus

FanSpamTastic · 28/08/2025 22:49

There are some great buys in Aldi today. Picked up a double duvet for DS (off to Kingston) for £12.99. Also got pillows and food storage boxes. There was various cookware, there’s an air fryer for £30. Worth a look.

FiveGoMadInYork · 29/08/2025 16:50

Another one heading off to Lancaster here (Fylde) - he’s our eldest so first time experience for us! His younger siblings have already got Pinterest boards, as they’re moving rooms once he’s away, but I’m sure they’ll miss him, as we all will. He’s a great lad, and we’re very proud of him.

To add to this, I found Asda (George home) great for duvet (double "soft touch" was £10.75 and there was a cheaper double one with higher tog at £8.99). Also got pillows, and v cheap kitchen utensils such as veg peeler (65p), potato masher (£1 something) and oven glove (£3). She has a small double bed in her accommodation so while we are getting double duvet and cover etc, we have bought mattress protector/topper from Dunelm which seemed to have best range (value for money) choice for small double.

ilovebagpuss · 29/08/2025 17:56

Aldi have lots of pans and kitchen things too. I found an over the radiator airer for 4.99
