Will try to add old threads, maybe good for us to give an update of where our DCs are at

@Nousernamefree I second your praise of all the kids that are following this path, they really are going above and beyond in this process.

Offers or no offers having been through this they have done very well indeed!

WeCantGoOverIt · 09/02/2025 20:35

The bit at the end suggests the BMA is supporting the current situation

mumsneedwine · 09/02/2025 21:03

This is a tough one for me. On one hand, I want to support your DC into medicine. On the other, I'm a mum of an F2 who is facing unemployment in August.

Support this and maybe things will be better for yours in 7 years. For now, there are not enough jobs and F2s are faced with leaving the UK or driving an Uber.

Sorry. It's a bit 💩

For info about the current state of play in relation to future employment. Or at least one pressure group's exposition. Of course your own DC are seven years off, but they might like to be aware of some of the issues.

This is a pretty easy situation for Wes Streeting to fix and I expect he will. There are 2 issues here from my direct experience. No 1 IMGs often come with a lot of stuff that ticks boxes on shortlisting such as publications
No 2 is that the shortage occupation list allowed Trusts to directly recruit into non training grades IMGs as first role in UK.
they often get given options such as completing an MSC or research projects in the role which again improves shortlisting.
Give it a couple of years and most apply for and are successful at securing speciality training. That’s my experience in my Trust. I expect this to be fixed ASAP as it is a no brainer

This has the same effect as Modernising Medical Careers did in 2007

medical training is designed by
policy wonks/ seniors in organisations that have never been anywhere near a junior doctor( and could not foresee that a medical couple in their late 20s with a child would have any problems training at either end of the country) or
medics who have not gone through the system themselves and been able to reach consultant / GP by flexible career paths

I had friends who as registrars had to train in Liverpool/ Devon and Liverpool/ Cambridge who were always desperate for au pairs as they could not actually afford the childcare whilst trying to maintain two households

report here

The mismatch between numbers of applicants and available training posts—one of the main causes of juniors’ pain in 2007—is beyond the report’s remit. Last year there were 32 649 applicants for 23 247 specialist training posts in the UK. Figure 4.17 of the interim report shows that the oversupply of applicants (9402) almost equals the number of applicants with highly skilled migrant programme visas (10 014). This scheme, however, is the business of the Home Office and the Treasury, and the Treasury is presumably happy to use an oversupply of applicants to keep down the pressure for salary increases. When the Department of Health tried unilaterally to impose additional conditions to the scheme, it was swatted down by the appeal court for its pains.8 The best that the report can do is to call for “a coherent model of medical workforce supply within which apparently conflicting policies on self-sufficiency and open-borders/overproduction should be publicly disclosed and reconciled.”

Modernising Medical Careers: final report - PMC

Now implement it

It's all v depressing at the moment. Current F2s can't get training, F3 jobs or locums. So it's Down Under or that Uber.

Please look at this and sign if you can

mumsneedwine · 09/02/2025 21:35

@ipredictariot5 problem this year is that there are so few clinical fellow jobs and locum market has gone. So they don't have the luxury of a few years before speciality as they haven't got a doctor job. Come August, many expect to be unemployed.

I feel this is all too depressing for our keen 2025 applicants. There's a thread in AIBU where we are discussing taxing this. And trying to think of ways to change it for the better.

mumsneedwine · 09/02/2025 22:24

Fixing this

maybemedmum · 10/02/2025 10:48

Great news about the Leicester offer @JuMcGoo.
Have signed the petition @mumsneedwine and following the threads about the current situation for newly qualified doctors with some alarm. It seems such a crazy situation that it's hard (but not impossible) to believe it won't be fixed by the time it's relevant for our kids, but that's scant comfort for your daughter and the others who really shouldn't be in this situation.

mumsneedwine · 10/02/2025 10:50

@maybemedmum it wasn't like this when our F2s applied. It's all got very much worse in the last 18 months. It has to be sorted - but will it be quick ?

There's always abroad 🤷‍♀️

Justlikingit · 10/02/2025 16:29

For those who may be in the know, is it usual for Liverpool to send out emails re: selecting accommodation before offers go out?

mumsneedwine · 10/02/2025 16:43

@Justlikingit yes, you can apply before you've got an offer. And id do it as first come basis. No costs involved !

2kidsand1dog · 10/02/2025 18:30

So exciting for all these DC to be getting offers - I remember it well from last year!

My DD got 4 offers - UEA ( 15/2) Newcastle (26/2) HYMS (01/3) and finally her 1st choice Sheffield on 13/3!

She’s now a very happy 1st year in Sheffield - course is interesting and she works hard but also plays hard too! She’s in the cheerleading team and trains 2 x per week plus has to do a 5k run and flyer video each week!!

Good luck - it’s a tough process - our young people are amazing!

Thanks for this. It’s hard though, feels like putting the cart before the horse.
DD can’t even think beyond mocks at the moment

Totally get that! It’s weird they send accommodation stuff out before offers made. The waiting is so hard!

Do send in accom request for Liverpool - by time DD got her offer ( late March), a lot of the popular accommodation had gone to those who had accepted much earlier (non-medical) offers and she couldn’t get what she wanted - it’s all first come first served which obviously discriminates against medical offers…..

Africa2go · 11/02/2025 18:19

Liverpool try to make sure that medics are on an equal footing by saying they can apply as soon as they've been invited for interview.

That’s good to hear - it’s what we suggested they ought to do after our experience 6 years ago!
