Could I ask please if people think a UCAT of 2990 is a bit too close for comfort for an RUK applicant to Edinburgh? Thanks

A friend of my daughters got 2910 B3 and got an interview for the 2024 cycle - she is RUK

mumsneedwine · 01/09/2024 10:20

@CopingHagen it should be enough. But with that UCAT you could guarantee 4 interviews. Scotland always riskier if RUK, due to quotas.

CopingHagen · 01/09/2024 11:33

Thanks both. We have strong connections with Edinburgh, so just trying to help DC balance risks.

@HGC2 most Unis don't read it, but a few do (on the spreadsheet). It's about reflecting on what you've learned, not what you've done. So not 'I worked in a care home for 2 weeks'. More 'while working in a care home I learned that patience and compassion are vital attributes and that the best care is through teamwork'.
Mention something academic (my biology has led me to an interest in the function of the kidney and I've learned .....).
And mention interests saying how they show ability to manage time, prioritise and look after mental health.
Use the GMC competencies as your guide.

Hi, sorry if I’m being annoying but where is the spreadsheet please? I have a three year old as well as a 17 year old so my tired eyes may have missed it!

JuMcGoo · 01/09/2024 11:47

Hi all,
firstly I wanted to say thank you so much to those who have put this thread together. What an amazing source of information and support.

My daughter got mainly 9s at GCSE and has just scored 2770 on the UCAT. She’s really disappointed as she had been getting better than that on the mocks.

Can you suggest which unis she should apply for? She really liked Leicester and we are going to see UEA, Liverpool and Nottingham. Possibly Brighton. We saw Manchester but she preferred Leicester.

Thanks so much!

mumsneedwine · 01/09/2024 11:51

@JuMcGoo I can send you the real thing if you send me your email.

If she got SJT 1 then Notts should be good, they double score VR section ?
Others look good options. Mix of fan GCSEs and a strong UCAT (it is !) should mean she can get 4 interviews 😊

Sybill · 01/09/2024 11:56

@JuMcGoo thats a fantastic UCAT! She’ll have plenty of options with that (combined with her GCSEs). My DD is starting at Leicester in 2 weeks and had a 2680 UCAT with all 9s - think the cut off was 52 or 52.5 last year. Your DD could try QUB too - they also score using GCSEs and UCAT combined - my DD loved Leicester from the beginning but thought QUB was very similar in feel/ course. They give you £100 towards travel costs if going to the open day from GB

I have a relative starting there next week with slightly less than that - rUK

Thank you. She got band 2 in SJT and VR was her strongest score at 740. I really hope she can get an interview as they’ll see just how committed and kind she is.

islaoo · 01/09/2024 19:16

Can anyone confirm Leicester cut off last year? DD would get 54.5 on their points but website I’ve seen said 2023 cut off was 59.5 so she seems way off.. we’re about to cancel the open day!

mumsneedwine · 01/09/2024 19:30

@islaoo new scoring last year so did come down to near your score. So, it's a punt as no one knows what will happen this year but I'd go and ask them what their actual cut off was (did hear a candidate with 53, but I never met them, just hearsay).

Sybill · 01/09/2024 20:58

Cut off was 52.5 for home non-grads with predicted grades @islaoo hope this link works with all the details

mumsneedwine · 01/09/2024 21:24

I will update my spreadsheet 😊

ipredictariot5 · 01/09/2024 21:32

2720 and Glasgow offer RUK 2024 no contextual factors
not Edinburgh I know but might be useful info !

Thanks so much! We shall go to the open day in that case..

Does anyone know someone who has had an offer post fast track to Nottingham interview stage via the elite athletes scheme? And what their UCAT/ GCSEs were.
DD looking to apply and trying to decide if it’s strategic enough
Also what do they look at post interview to make offer

I can help with this.

DS interviewed under fast track to interview athlete criteria in 21/22

Ucat was 2900 b2. They dont score the application like a normal athlete as they are fast tracked to interview rather than scored.

They are scored under the same criteria as a standard applicant. I don't know the criteria for offer.

Best piece of advice is to look at BUCS which is the uni league Notts compete in. I understood that if you offered a BUCS sport they might be interested.

Justlikingit · 02/09/2024 15:54

Thanks definitely BUCS.
I just wondered what the UCAT scores are for those that went on to get offers.

I think but not sure that they use interview scores sorely to make offers and don’t take UCAT/ GCSEs into consideration at this stage.
And maybe the PS for those that tie. Not sure but this is what I’ve heard from someone who isn’t 💯 sure either

Justlikingit · 02/09/2024 15:55

Solely not sorely, silly predictive text on my phone!

london26 · 02/09/2024 16:33

Hi,
My DS has a score of 58.5 for Leicester. Do you think this will be competitive enough for an interview? Just because on here https://www.theukcatpeople.co.uk/guide/medical-school/medicine/university-of-leicester?srsltid=AfmBOoq7X915ZHNZlmWkfCnz6re2arYpS7_ENY9J_TTc43ufzHuOCElj
it says the 2023 cutoff was 59.5.
Thank you

mumsneedwine · 02/09/2024 17:47

@london26 was 52.5 last year. They started a new scoring system.

london26 · 02/09/2024 17:52

@mumsneedwine
Thanks that's a relief- so it should be similar this year?

mumsneedwine · 02/09/2024 17:55

@london26 well that's the 50 million dollar question. Maybe. All we can do is look at previous years and make an educated guess. Depends who applies I'm afraid, it's not an exact science.
