University offers coming in?

1000 replies

WombatChocolate · 27/09/2023 09:54

Just for nosiness and due to excitement about DS’s application going in, wondered if we could have a thread with people sharing offers as they are received, during this early phase.

Has anyone had an offer yet? Who will be first?

And totally realise that most won’t have applied yet and won’t do so for months and that’s absolutely fine and more normal.

DD hasn't even been able to apply yet because the college haven't finished their references! They're also refusing to let her out her EPQ on, because she did it with an external body and not the college. It's getting a bit stressful!

tulip369 · 20/10/2023 21:59

Cardiff also start offering

TheOnlyMrsW · 21/10/2023 06:14

@daffodilandtulip we're exactly the same, Dd is getting v stressed about it!!! She's worried that she'll miss out ( and can't be talked down about it!).
Should be in Cardiff for their open day but Babet put the kibosh on that so of all the places she's applying we've only actually seen 2 of them 🤦

daffodilandtulip · 21/10/2023 07:43

@TheOnlyMrsW it's so stressful isn't it? I don't even know if I ought to be calming her down or ringing the college to complain! It doesn't help that she's having a battle over one of her grades - consistently getting 94-99% in every test and both mocks but they'll only predict A, and she wants A*. It's so hard!

I would definitely kick off about the EPQ. It is DD’s application, not the college’s. It shouldn’t make any difference where she did the EPQ. All they ask for on UCAS is the examination board. Does she have the Grace for it yet? If not has she been given a predicted grade for it?

daffodilandtulip · 21/10/2023 08:38

@Rollergirl11 yes she has the grade and she's got the proof. It was a very specific topic and she wrote the title of it on the ucas form and college were quite sarcastic about it!

Rollergirl11 · 21/10/2023 08:46

Well then I would step in here @daffodilandtulip . There is absolutely no reason not to include her EPQ and if she has a good grade it could lead to some reduced offers. Sounds like college are being very difficult and obstructive.

daffodilandtulip · 21/10/2023 08:49

Yes this is what I felt. Her mates are getting some offers and she's freaking out, and they're just delaying it. College just seems so different to school in terms of how much to intervene. I might call them on Monday and be "that parent", see if we can move things along.

stoneysongs · 21/10/2023 09:57

I'm pretty sure you can add the EPQ after they have submitted the form if you want to, could be a good way of avoiding the delay an argument might cause.

Pleasealexa · 21/10/2023 10:17

Ds has received a standard offer from Nottingham and they also offered an alternative, lower grade, if he firmed. Shame you can firm after exams because if they didn't go well this would be very tempting for him.

Whilst it's interesting to have this list, I assume it's very course specific? For example, it may be that Birmingham offers early for English but doesn't offer early for Maths. I'm worried that posting this list might worry people if their DC doesn't get an early offer when it looks like others are (although the reverse is probably very useful - if no one has had an offer, it will reduce stress!)

Revengeofthepangolins · 21/10/2023 12:57

Yup. The interesting thing is "english at B'ham has offered". Knowing simply that the uni in general has doesn't tell anyone anything, sadly

Rollergirl11 · 21/10/2023 13:08

@redskytonights i completely agree that this list, while useful, is quite anxiety inducing and for this reason I won’t be passing this info on to DD.

sambamyty · 21/10/2023 13:18

We caved in and dd called Liverpool yesterday . Didn't give any personal details but asked if pqa are treated differently. Admissions said they are still waiting to hear what they can offer pqa applications for compsci.

For context my dd got better then predicted and decided to reapply for 2024. She has an a level cs for only a 5 gcse in maths.
Im actually worried sick it's not enough even with three AAA and this gap has been for nothing.

spacechimp79 · 21/10/2023 14:52

My DS has received offers from Leeds and Sheffield for PPE. So relieved!

daffodilandtulip · 21/10/2023 15:01

@singingstones oh that's interesting, thank you. We'll definitely look into that.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 21/10/2023 15:55

Offer from Leeds for Natural Sciences - typical offer.

Livinghappy · 21/10/2023 20:33

@sambamyty Is there any information on the your daughters targetted universities about gcse's? I had seen a universities, might have been Manchester for Physics say criteria and how much GCSEs are weighted.

Does she have plans for gap year? I think a gap year can be such a positive experience, you are a year older and have had the opportunity to save money so it won't be a waste.

I find it useful to see the universities who have offered even if the courses are not specified. However it is worthwhile knowing that for most students, it will be be months before people receive all their offers.

PandaPacer · 22/10/2023 07:11

My DS has one offer to date for CompSci at Bristol. Their admissions website for that course says GCSE are weighted 20%, A Levels 80%.

sambamyty · 22/10/2023 10:06

@Livinghappy she's working and saving at the moment. She's been visiting friends who are currently living in student accommodation to get a feel of student feel etc.

@PandaPacer this is really useful to know . She's been really sensible with her choices and not selected anything requiring A level Math.
I'm hoping the fact she has proofed herself capable her scoring an A in cs already is enough to supersede the lower maths score.
To be fair, she was part of the covid cohort and didn't get a chance to sit but still got the highest she could on the math foundation.

Fight for her, absolutely fight. This has been mentioned on another thread but parents of fee paying children would contact college to increase their grades even if they knew that their child is currently achieiving Astar AA and is actually going to actually get Astar AA.

By putting them into that 3 A star category their application would probably viewed more favourably than if it was Astar AA. They get an offer on entry grades Astar AA and ultimately achieve Astar AA and because they make the entry grade they are in.

Contact college and ask for the A star, she is achieving A star so why won't they give her that? If this is based on last year's cohort being over predicted that is not your problem, that is theirs. Wade in. Honestly, I would.

catmomof3 · 22/10/2023 20:54

My DD has applied to Oxford, UCL, Kings, Leeds and Warwick. She's already got a standard offer from Leeds and a contextual one if she firms. I don't think she'll hear from the London unis or Warwick till next year and she should know if she's short listed for oxford next month.

ShanghaiDiva · 23/10/2023 10:55

Dd has received an offer from Exeter for natural sciences.

Rollergirl11 · 23/10/2023 11:09

Excellent news @ShanghaiDiva.🎊👏

I think Exeter is who DD would most like to hear from at this point so fingers crossed she does.
