University offers coming in?

1000 replies

WombatChocolate · 27/09/2023 09:54

Just for nosiness and due to excitement about DS’s application going in, wondered if we could have a thread with people sharing offers as they are received, during this early phase.

Has anyone had an offer yet? Who will be first?

And totally realise that most won’t have applied yet and won’t do so for months and that’s absolutely fine and more normal.

Mondaytosunday, one looked after a fellow student with disabilities. On certain days when the person struggled with getting care he would offer high rates.
Other one is a hm, kind of teacher.

Students from London can use libraries from other London unis, so eg DC at Lse would study at UCL and KCLs library as nearer.

Almost true. I think students at a University of London institution may use other University of London institution libraries. Other than that there’s the SCONUL scheme but UCL are notoriously NOT part of that for UG. No London Met/UAL/Westminster undergrads allowed!

Do UCL own their own halls of residences? If so then I’m more than shocked at the prices, I’m angered. If they are owned there is no need to make a profit and those rooms could go for £50-75 a week. I know most London unis don’t own their own student accomodation but I assumed somewhere as old as University of London would. I’m pretty sure they own town houses in Whitechapel.

@spacechimp79
I can't believe you would generalize in such swooping terms

"often speak a different language and tend to mix less and hang around with the other international students from their own country."

What total nonsense. Almost bigotry.

spacechimp79 · 28/12/2023 19:13

You can pretend that it isn’t true but it was true when I went to uni thirty odd years ago and it’s still true today. I work and live at one of the most popular universities for overseas students.
Think what you like.

Revengeofthepangolins · 28/12/2023 19:28

@JesusWeptLady It just is true. My DS is at UCL. Only one of his friends is white British and loads are international (including Hong King internationals) but the vast majority of Chinese students just don't mix. He was in an intercollegiate hall that has a lot of them and in his first few weeks he keen to be friends with everyone so would try to strike up conversations in lifts etc. a few of the Chinese girls would chat, until pulled into line by peers, but the boys would regularly just totally blank him, look him in the eye and look away. After a few weeks, he gave up. And lots never appear in even the more expensive halls - their parents buy or tent them flats with cleaners or use targeted private halls (£450/week) and just never really cross paths with other students.

lastdayatschool · 28/12/2023 20:46

Same experience at Exeter for my DS. He's made friends with people from the US and South Africa. However, all attempts to become friendly with the East Asian students on his course - of which there are lots - hit a brick wall.

Dixiechickonhols · 28/12/2023 22:23

It was certainly my experience 30 yrs ago that International students from countries sending large numbers of students tended to not mix. It was Israel and Cyprus where I went to Uni. They tended to be older after compulsory military service too.
Especially in London the international students tend to be able to afford the 300/350 a week halls. If a big chunk on your course are in hall together you can't afford and another big chunk are living at home (common in London) then the pool to be friendly with is a lot smaller. It's definitely a concern.

It's not nonsense when it's a fact

You can't hide from the facts

I will say at least UCL were open about costs and had the slide on display all open day.
Kings in London were similar prices (they have a few cheaper rooms but only for very specific categories like care leavers)
They played a snazzy video at the accommodation talk and no prices on it...
I was definitely northern mum on those open days...how much?!

Wronginformation · 28/12/2023 23:19

My knowledge of London unis is limited to my two DC. The one at Lse used the UCL library when that one was nearest, now the kcl library is nearest so uses that one.
When I mentioned she had friends from all over the world, it does include China, Hong Kong Singapore.
The ones in her year 1 flat she didn't get on with were the white boys from private schools 😁

Revengeofthepangolins · 29/12/2023 11:53

HK and Singapore are different. As are the Mumbai party crowd

Yeah., but I don't get that detailed information from dc.😂

Does anyone know if Reading do Offer holder days? DD has a Human Geography offer and is keen to visit before deciding whether to make it her insurance choice,

MommaZenZone · 05/01/2024 06:30

Any new offers coming in, post holiday season please?

TheOnlyMrsW · 05/01/2024 08:17

I think (from what DD has said anyway) that most are still away until Monday, we're trying to juggle offer holder days and both Cardiff and Leeds are not back until the 8th

RockaLock · 05/01/2024 09:39

DS has had an offer for physics from Durham now, although he did say that happened about 3 weeks ago and he was sure he'd told me Hmm

WriterOfWrongs · 05/01/2024 22:44

Ha RockaLock that will so be my DS in 3 years’ time. Feel for you Grin

Luckily for me, DD, who has applied for next year, tells me straight away. She submitted her application on 15th Dec and received one offer within days (Sussex) & one a few days ago (Sheffield). 2 down, 3 to go.

MommaZenZone · 06/01/2024 13:13

Anyone familiar with how to request/option to request a college at Durham please?

Jaxx · 06/01/2024 13:45

I believe you do it through the portal after an offer has been made (but not certain as still waiting for a decision).

Try the “Durham University” thread currently on here. It is for current and prospective (probably former too) students there and is supportive and informative.

KittyMcKitty · 07/01/2024 08:22

Your dc will receive an email from Durham about ranking colleges. Assuming it’s the same as last year it’s not done for ages (May?). They will get a provisional allocation which is confirmed after results. There’s a page on the Durham website which explains the allocation process.

Morning all - DS sent off his application for Comp Sci on 11 Dec. His two top choices are Southampton and Warwick but no offers / rejections from them yet. Has anyone heard back from these two unis for Comp Sci? We are fully aware the course is super competitive....Or do they do 'gathered field' so we sit back and try hard not to think about it until April? 🤓

JediKnightingale · 08/01/2024 11:25

My DS has applied for CS at Southampton. Not heard anything yet but he’s confident about an offer as his predicted grades are higher than required. He only had 1 offer so far - York - but he only sent his application off a few weeks ago.

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 08/01/2024 21:32

DD got an offer from York for law ! So only waiting for UCL now.

Well done to your Dd!
I’m curious to know why she chose UCL of the London unis for law?
Still trying to understand why my Dd prefers LSE - she said something about the course.
I will do some checking, although ultimately it’s her choice but always thought that Kings and UCL were better for law than LSE.
