University offers coming in?

Just for nosiness and due to excitement about DS’s application going in, wondered if we could have a thread with people sharing offers as they are received, during this early phase.

Has anyone had an offer yet? Who will be first?

And totally realise that most won’t have applied yet and won’t do so for months and that’s absolutely fine and more normal.

I don’t think there is any comparison to be made between how people parent, ever. But especially by the time they are young adults. Everyone will have experienced different things - your situation @Myfabby must be very tough to navigate.

Also DC are very different and a lot of it really isn’t about parenting. I have one that was ready to leave home about 12 yrs old and another that I’m trying to shake off the apron strings. I have one that had a life threatening illness and one that had a friend die. All these things add up to influence how we parent and how they are, so one isn’t right and one isn’t wrong.

Do you know what, the worry for parents is awful wherever they're applying to as we all just want our kids to be happy. DS2 has picked some sought-after unis for Computer Science, like Bath, so I'm expecting him not to get offers for all his choices. I'll be happy if he gets a couple of offers before Christmas so can relax a bit. Till mocks. Then summer exams. Then results day. Then first day at uni. Then when he doesn't seem to ever go out. Then when he DOES go out. Then when he doesn't seem to be liking his course. Then when he DOES like it and seem to be working too hard. Then when there is no mention of girlfriends. Then when there IS a girlfriend and the worry goes to wondering if they're getting too reliant on each other and not focussing on work as much.

Flipping heck, no-one tells you this stuff at toddler group! 😂

This made me laugh @CurlyhairedAssassin. So true.

daffodilandtulip · 30/11/2023 17:59

DD has another set of mocks after Christmas. They've told her today that they tell the uni's the results. DD is now panicking that she'll lose her offers if the mocks aren't as good as her predictions. She has 4/5 offers already.

Anyone know if this is the case?

Utter rubbish as far as I know. An offer can’t be taken back short of major criminality or something.

Pleasealexa · 30/11/2023 18:02

@daffodilandtulip if your DD has a UCAS application in I don't see how they could change predictions. Students who haven't applied could have the revised predictions. I suspect the school is piling on the pressure for those students who might take a relaxed approach to mocks.

I

daffodilandtulip · 30/11/2023 18:03

This is what I thought @Pleasealexa

Revengeofthepangolins · 30/11/2023 18:04

There isn't even any mechanism for schools to communicate with the universities

daffodilandtulip · 30/11/2023 18:13

I did wonder this, once the UCAS forms are in. I wondered if maybe they had some special access.

TheOnlyMrsW · 30/11/2023 20:23

Sounds like school are trying to make sure that they revise for mocks, I've never heard of that before.........
DD has another offer, so that's two now and feeling slightly more relaxed (I'm trying not to stress too much about the actual exams for now!) but she did have a major wobble today as it's all getting a bit real now 😢. One of her friends got a rejection from Oxford but is ok and moving on
Exam timetable is out so we know what that looks like too

SoilTiller · 30/11/2023 20:32

@daffodilandtulip having worked in uni admissions this sounds balderdash to me.

daffodilandtulip · 30/11/2023 20:34

Great to hear, thank you @SoilTiller
She was getting into a right panic!

Tell her it's rubbish.

I mean the school would have to email the specific uni admissions officer directly, which is preposterous for this type of scenario. UCAS wouldn't accommodate this kind of thing I don't think.

SoilTiller · 30/11/2023 20:40

Admissions offices have neither time nor inclination to do anything like this "tweaking"! It would actually create havoc with their offer making.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 30/11/2023 22:27

Part of the anxiety stems from the fact my husband died 3 years ago and that loss really knocked us, so I feel like nothing else must go wrong for them.

Ah, I'm so sorry to hear that, @Myfabby You must be a strong family. I understand completely that you don't want them to experience any more heartache. I guess it's that protective maternal instinct.

As people have said, though, plenty of dads don't seem to worry the same, and plenty of mums too. My DH is less interested in the nitty gritty details than me. He will offer the kids advice if they ask for it, or even if they tell him something and he might not agree but wouldn't show it, but will put it in a nice way so that it gets them thinking about their decision rather than actually doubting themselves IYSWIM. But he doesn't have a clue about deadlines, applications processes etc. He's really hands off in that way.

I guess we're all different types of parents. The important thing is that we help our kids when they need it, and don't smother them by trying to help when they're sorting it themselves.

Puffypuffin · 01/12/2023 12:55

Offer from Lincoln today. DD really pleased about that one as it's her insurance choice. 😊

mondaytosunday · 02/12/2023 08:35

@Puffypuffin 🎉🎉

Lightsabre · 02/12/2023 09:26

@daffodilandtulip it's terrible of the school to pressure kids this way. This wouldn't happen and I'd make a complaint about it.

Congratulations to those getting further offers, exciting times.

stoneysongs · 02/12/2023 10:37

@daffodilandtulip I can't believe they are scaring the DC with blatant lies like this. No, they cannot scupper people's applications in this way. I would also complain.

Tiggermum14 · 04/12/2023 22:51

DS just got a Durham maths offer, A star A A - (I think reduced a grade as he did pretty well - got a 7 - in TMUA). He’s pleased!

PaddingtonPaddington · 04/12/2023 23:00

Great news on the latest offers @Tiggermum14 and @Puffypuffin

DS had final offer through from Surrey, expecting ABB but got a lower contextual offer so he’s now thinking it might be a good insurance but it’s the only one he didn’t visit. Went to book the offer holder day and it clashes with York and the only other option is while he’s away skiing in half term.

TheOnlyMrsW · 05/12/2023 08:57

Great news @Puffypuffin and @Tiggermum14 🤘🤘.
DD has an offer from Leeds which has been the favourite for a while now so absolutely buzzing about that!!!! It's the highest one which is a bit daunting but we'll see what comes out of the offer days 😊

TenSheds · 05/12/2023 19:05

DD has finally updated me that she's got a reduced offer from Exeter as a result of a programme she did through school - BBB (classics and MFL). This is excellent news as it's her insurance choice - actually the favourite course, but not the favourite location based on open day - and 3Bs is comfortable. Definitely takes away a lot of stress.

Chocolatta · 06/12/2023 08:51

DD got her first offer yesterday. UCAS form went in Monday lunchtime and she heard yesterday afternoon from York who offered her ABB for Human Geography.

mondaytosunday · 06/12/2023 10:20

Congrats on those offers coming through! First Cambridge interview this morning 😬😬😬😬🤞🤞🤞.

MommaZenZone · 06/12/2023 10:49

Following DD's interview at Oriel Oxford on Monday, she's heard she's a second interview with Oriel again tomorrow. Bit weird. This time with two tutors not teaching her subject. Normally, very good but not great applicants are offered to other colleges to see if they'll take them, whereas really top candidates are displayed across colleges to ensure similar standards. But a second interview at the same college seems unusual. Anyone familiar?
