University offers coming in?

Just for nosiness and due to excitement about DS’s application going in, wondered if we could have a thread with people sharing offers as they are received, during this early phase.

Has anyone had an offer yet? Who will be first?

And totally realise that most won’t have applied yet and won’t do so for months and that’s absolutely fine and more normal.

Ds friend has an offer from Bristol.

Livinghappy · 08/10/2023 20:25

@Lightsabre, how quick was it from submission to offer?

Headingto18 · 08/10/2023 20:41

@Livinghappy DD applied last Sunday and offer came on weds

A few days @Livinghappy. 4 x A star student.

jlpth · 08/10/2023 20:47

Yes, an offer from Bristol here as well. No other offers, but Bath acknowledged and asked to log in to their own system. Looks like Bristol are really motoring - probably quite a good strategy.

RabbitH0LE · 08/10/2023 20:53

So should kids in year 13 be putting applications in already?

RabbitH0LE · 08/10/2023 20:53

I thought it was January

RabbitH0LE · 08/10/2023 20:53

Haven't even been to any open days yet!

Lightsabre · 08/10/2023 20:58

Not if they're not ready @RabbitH0LE. These dc are early entrants and the deadline for certain courses/Oxbridge is 16/10. The main deadline for most courses is January.

Rollergirl11 · 08/10/2023 21:00

@RabbitH0LE the deadline for Oxbridge and Medicine/Veterinary science is October 16th so I think the majority of people receiving offers now will be early apps. The normal deadline is the end of January.

However most of the open days were in the summer and now for Year 13 so if you haven’t been to any yet you’re running out of time for 2024 applications.

RabbitH0LE · 08/10/2023 21:02

We have booked them for October. The next few weeks

mondaytosunday · 09/10/2023 01:03

Thanks @KittyMcKitty. She's looking at the CHSS at Durham doing Sociology and perhaps....Politics? Or just Sociology. She liked the look of the modules, but I have heard negative things about the teachers - that they weren't particularly engaging or that forthcoming.
She's a bit put out about how far away it is from home - today she was looking up train prices to see how realistic it was to come home for a weekend! She likes the look of Chads and St Johns but she would hate to share a room. Not a partier and not sporty.
How is you daughter finding it? One real concern (nothing to do with Durham) is she has no idea what she wants to do afterwards and thinks sociology is not specific enough and will require a masters...?

mondaytosunday · 09/10/2023 01:05

Sorry everyone I know that's off topic!

DS has now got his first offer. York AAA. He is v pleased. He had been thinking it is likely to be his insurance choice. He has Oxford (unlikely) and Durham is then his top choice and the standard offer there is Astar AA. So if he got that and not Oxford, York would probably become his insurance. But there’s no certainty about getting Durham either for Eng Lit.. Lots with top predictions get rejected. He would be disappointed to miss out on Oxford and Durham, but he does like York and today says he would be happy to go there. So having one in the bag is a good start.

Apparantly others he knows have also received York offers today.

This is about 13 days after his application went in….just for anyone. Keeping track of these things.

@RabbitH0LE we did a couple of open days in June and are doing more in the next few weeks, and because DD has changed her mind on course a couple of times there are places that she's applying to which haven't been visited. She's looked at the course module content and is using that as the main driver for where to apply, the logic being that if she does get an offer from somewhere we didn't go to open day then we can look at their offer-holder days instead before making a decision on firm and insurance.
She's frustrated with school at the moment as she wants to put her application in asap but hasn't had her reference written yet - Oxbridge, med & dentistry have been prioritised as they close much earlier but she just wants it done now!!!
@WombatChocolate - yikes at AAA being a likely insurance, that's a huge amount of pressure for your DS Flowers

Livinghappy · 09/10/2023 19:24

@WombatChocolate Your ds must feel reassured to have 1 offer. Well done, what a relief! . If your experience is similar my ds has over 10 days to go. His likely insurance would also be AAA

He has signed up to some of the uni specific applicatio trackers so there is a fair amount of admin plus Cambridge separate forms.. I'm leaving it all to him..time will tell if that's wise.

Revengeofthepangolins · 09/10/2023 19:50

@WombatChocolate Another prospective english lit boy in this household - I have checked that he realised that wherever he goes his course is likely to be 75-80% girls. May I ask where else wombat jnr has applied other than Oxford, Durham and York? Or is he still thinking about his last couple?

DS also got a York offer today. Told he is 'on hold' for Bristol, assume means won't find out until they have seen all applications?

WeeMadArthur1 · 09/10/2023 21:03

@RabbitH0LE I'm glad you said that, we're also going to open days in October and I thought we had plenty of time because the deadline is January.

It's not first come first served is it? If people are getting offers now does that mean there will be fewer places left for those who apply later?

Wolvesart · 09/10/2023 21:11

DC’s went in less than a week ago. He has offer from one of his more back up places.

We were told it was a long wait for Durham

Livinghappy · 09/10/2023 21:11

So it seems York & Bristol are early offers..I guess it will also vary by department.

TheOnlyMrsW · 10/10/2023 09:41

@WeeMadArthur1 not first come first served, although it will vary from course to course, even at the same place. When we went to the last open day at Leeds we were told by the Earth/Environmental Science lead that their intention is to wait until all applications are in before issuing any offers, but Geology (which is the same school and admissions person) will be sending out offers as suitable applications come in. That could also change depending on lots of things though...........a lot of the applications going in now are for Oxbridge or Medecine/Dentistry as their deadline is next week. DD's school are encouraging them all to get theirs done asap so as not to detract from actual school, DD has taken this completely on board and is ready to go. I think for her confidence it would be good to have an offer or two nice and early too.

stoneysongs · 10/10/2023 14:02

No, they have to give equal consideration to any application received before the deadline in January. This is why some of the heavily oversubscribed courses wait until they have all the applications before deciding. Other courses know that they'll be fine if they offer to everyone with predicted grades above a certain level, so they just do that as applications come in. I guess some courses do a bit of both and offer immediately to people they know they'll want, reject people they know they won't want, and keep the rest waiting until all the applications are in and they can start making the more marginal decisions.

Bigfatsquirrel · 10/10/2023 15:26

I think some unis also give out their contextual and international offers first and hold back a lot of the non contextual home students. That's where the squeeze for places (if there is one - course and Uni dependent obvs) seems to be at some unis.
