University offers coming in?

Just for nosiness and due to excitement about DS’s application going in, wondered if we could have a thread with people sharing offers as they are received, during this early phase.

Has anyone had an offer yet? Who will be first?

And totally realise that most won’t have applied yet and won’t do so for months and that’s absolutely fine and more normal.

Final offer has just come in.

DD1 (Biomedical Science)
York AAB
Cardiff AAB
Warwick AAB
Kent BBB
Surrey BBB

DD2 (History)
Exeter AAB (inc EPQ)
Bristol ABB (Contextual)
Warwick AAA
York AAA
Kent BBB

They just have to make their minds up now (and get the grades!)

Well done them. Why are humanities offers so high? I keep wondering about this

Puffypuffin · 27/11/2023 22:52

Loughborough offer for DD tonight for English and Creative Writing. AAB

MrsScrubbingbrush · 27/11/2023 22:53

I don't know, maybe they're more popular courses.

Gosh - your household is done and dusted very early! So good for them to be able to turn their attention back to normal work flows.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 28/11/2023 14:12

@Revengeofthepangolins yes it's a lovely feeling for them. They can now concentrate on their work!

Over the Christmas holidays we're planning on narrowing down the lists and hopefully in the New Year go on the offer holder days.

Good luck to everyone's DCs.

Rejection from Oxford for biomedical sciences for DD today, but no surprise as it was always a long shot. Three offers are in for neuroscience - Bristol ABB (contextual), Exeter ABB and Warwick AAB. Just waiting on Edinburgh now, which is usually slow to make offers and is the one she really wants! She really likes the Bristol course, fortunately, so that is a good back up if Edinburgh doesn't work out.

RepetitiveMotion · 28/11/2023 19:18

Exeter offer here - AAA.

Mirrormeback · 28/11/2023 22:17

DS got an interview offer for Oxford for Maths and his chosen joint subject

Travelban · 29/11/2023 00:53

Rejection here from.Cambridge with no interview for CS. Has taken it very badly despite so many countless conversations about it.not.mattering. Won't discuss it without getting irate and keeps going back to it over and over.

I really don't know what to do.as I dont want this to.define him.

For context he has 12 A stars at Gcses, 4 A star predictions, high TMUA and strong PS with interview from Imperial and offers from Durham and St A. He also has a chronic illness which was mentioned in his reference.

I think the worse thing for him is he doesn't understand the reason but I just hope in time he can move on..I didn't want him to apply and wish he hadn't now :(

Silkiefloof · 29/11/2023 00:59

Travel I am so sorry for your DS, its very brutal with those results. If he really wants Cambridge he could take a year out and apply again. I was at Cambridge with someone who did that. Though I think computing is such an in demand degree you can be very successful without the Cambridge degree.

Silkiefloof · 29/11/2023 01:00

Congrats on the interviews and sorry for the rejections. And wishing luck to those still waiting.

Travelban · 29/11/2023 01:08

Thanks @Silkiefloof and I totally agree...

mondaytosunday · 29/11/2023 03:02

@Travelban it's tough isn't it. They all know in their heads it's a long shot even with stellar grades but in their hearts it's different, and they are so young still.
I know a lad who always dreamed of Cambridge, got a full scholarship to a competitive boarding school and had excellent qualifications but was rejected after interview. Devastated. But he went to Durham, had a wonderful time and now has a type of job that 'if I told you I'd have to kill you' with the government.

stoneysongs · 29/11/2023 07:54

Sympathies @Travelban that is very tough and hard to understand.

Did he apply to a very competitive college, like Churchill for example? If so there may have just been too many people even "better". I imagine there are a lot of extremely high TMUA scores.

You mention A* at GCSE, does this mean you're in Wales? The only other thing I can think of in that case is if his AS grades weren't good enough, ie A grade and near 100% UMS. Or if he is in England, maybe there were just too many people getting excellent GCSEs from worse schools, so ahead of him on score there?

Just trying to think of things to explain it, as I think the unfairness / randomness of it can be very hard to deal with. I hope he bounces back quickly - he will definitely do well elsewhere and have a great time. In a few years he can apply for postgrad at Cambridge, get a place and then turn them down for MIT or wherever Smile

Newgirls · 29/11/2023 08:37

Travel is he at state school? I would hope he would get an interview with all that. I know boys who had all that and didn’t get any offers at all the course is SO popular, Wherever he goes he will get an amazing job I’m sure.

Travelban · 29/11/2023 08:59

@Newgirls and @stoneysongs thank you for your kind messages. We are in England, sorry it wad 10 nines and 2 8s for gcses.. he is at an independent school albeit on a bursary...not that it matters now.anyway but that has probably gone against him. Like you all said just needs to get past it all and move on. He is extremely lucky to have the other offers to brilliant places....so should feel lucky ultimately.

MothBat · 29/11/2023 09:16

@Travelban Another C CS reject without interview in our house. Not such great grades as yours. Seems philosophical at the moment but won't tell me TMUA result. Have other offers so will be fine and at least we know now rather than interview and still get rejected.

stoneysongs · 29/11/2023 09:24

In that case it may be that his contextualised GCSE score was beatable iykwim. I don't think school type is a factor until the pool, but if lots at his school get good results he may have been pipped at the post by DC with similar grades who are significantly outperforming their peers. In some subjects it probably wouldn't make a difference but CS is so competitive I guess they have to find those tiny margins somewhere. Ugh, I feel for him. Good to hear he has options though.

Travelban · 29/11/2023 09:57

@MothBat sorry to hear you are also in this predicament. It's probably all going to be for the best, ultimately.

@stoneysongs I do think the only explanation is that they contextualised his score.
In saying that, Imperial is probably as.competitive if not more (20 to 1) and they offered an interview. We will never know for sure..

mondaytosunday · 29/11/2023 10:01

On those UCAS decision videos on YouTube there seems to be a randomness about it. One applicants gets offers from St A and LSE but rejected from Oxford; the next gets Oxford but a no from LSE; another gets in to Cambridge and Imperial but a no from St A...
Give it time. I know my dd keeps saying 'I'm not going to get an offer anyway' but I know she really really wants it. So tricky.

Travelban · 29/11/2023 10:07

I truly believe this, eg time will make it all seem quite insignificant. Ironically at the start of this jorumey we both agreed that he might get no offers at all, so having 2 and an interview should put him in a better mental position... however is hard to take a rejection when you have always been a high flyer. His brother amd sisters who have a much more 'average' academic profile, would have been ecstatic with his offers!

Prime example of perfectionism right there. Forever striving for the impossible and never good enough for their own harsh critic!

UZS · 29/11/2023 10:57

Any kid with those GCSE results and A Level predictions and a CS degree will be a smashing success in life no matter where he attends uni

FebuarySmith · 29/11/2023 11:09

@Travelban Sorry to hear that and I empathise. My DC was rejected after interview last year and genuinely took months to deal with it. Just saying I know how badly it can affect some kids, they can hold onto it for a long time and it’s very hard.
