University offers coming in?

1000 replies

WombatChocolate · 27/09/2023 09:54

Just for nosiness and due to excitement about DS’s application going in, wondered if we could have a thread with people sharing offers as they are received, during this early phase.

Has anyone had an offer yet? Who will be first?

And totally realise that most won’t have applied yet and won’t do so for months and that’s absolutely fine and more normal.

@DontLeanOnTheKeyboard York would be a great place for archaeology. Lovely university too. One of DD's favourites, but sadly they withdrew the course she wanted to do.

The Scots admission stats get really interesting when you slice them by ruk, standard vs contextual etc.

Indeed they do! And not in a good way for DD. She absolutely loves Edinburgh but only 25% of RUK students have been given offers for her course over the last couple of years. Last year 75% of Scots applicants got an offer. She has A(star)A(star)A predicted and the "standard" (supposedly!) offer is AAB, so hoping that will be enough for her to squeak through.

Revengeofthepangolins · 08/11/2023 11:30

@PumpkinKnitter Have you sliced the ruk numbers into contextual/standard? In 2022 at Andrew's english for instance offer rate for standard RUK applicants was just 19%. Not all courses are so skewed, but worth checking. I think it is the same for Home applicants. And overseas rates are often v different. Basically, headline offer rates are not very informative.

PumpkinKnitter · 08/11/2023 12:12

@Revengeofthepangolins No, I couldn't see a breakdown for standard vs contextual. Ah, well! Nothing to be done now. Application is in and at least if Edinburgh rejects her she has a good offer from Bristol where she loves the look of the course.

Maybe they prefer the international students as they get more money for it?

9K v 28K
given that uk fees have not increased in over 10 years this has to be a factor.

I reckon that’s the case for many of the top London universities.

My daughter wants to try for IC. I want her to be positive but also realistic and to be prepared for anything. It is not all about results and personal statements

notfeelingcreative · 08/11/2023 16:44

@Bluemountai Yep…see this from the FT - assume the ones missing the words are UCL and LSE - and these percentages are across all courses so you can imagine what it is for certain courses.

University offers coming in?
notfeelingcreative · 08/11/2023 16:48

@ShanghaiDiva some int fees are even higher than that…£39.1k per year for IC’s economics degree as an example. Don’t know what but something needs to change - you can see why unis are chasing the international fees.

SwottyDaisy · 08/11/2023 17:33

I work at a university and we were told that overseas students are the ONLY part of the budget that doesn’t make a loss.

Home students and research grants all operate at a loss. I am not sure if this is strictly true. Our VC and his suited henchmen seem to be getting by alright. But it’s probably a little true.

jlpth · 08/11/2023 18:43

I've also heard from someone who works at a university that overseas students are used to balance the books.

Yes, Warwick business school charges £31k for overseas students.

WombatChocolate · 08/11/2023 19:11

The £9.25k fees students pay are worth less than £6k in real terms, due to inflation. I know the fees seem vast to us as parents, but in terms of covering costs, they actually need to be significantly higher. Clearly, no-one wants to hear that and it wouldn’t be politically popular. At some point though, if the government isnt going to subsidise students, students and their parents will have to pay more. At the moment, international students are subsidising home students and universities are absolutely creaking under cost pressures. The quality of education our kids are getting will be declining. In the end, it will be the case of society having to accept the lower quality, which is what our fees afford, or paying more for decent quality. Something will have to give. But each generation of students and parents hope it won’t be them paying the ‘real’ cost . All so difficult and makes those of us who managed to graduate without debt or paying fees grateful for the times when we went.

@Rollergirl11 Thanks. It's their loss indeed! I believe God is preparing better uni where they will thrive for the children they rejected.

SuccessM · 09/11/2023 07:09

@TheOnlyMrsW Thanks. Yes atleast there are other options.

EleanorSidgwick · 09/11/2023 08:44

Son's friend has just had a surprisingly early offer from Edinburgh for CompSci. He is RUK.

SuccessM · 09/11/2023 10:42

@EleanorSidgwick wonderful, Congratulations to them! Good uni as well.

SuccessM · 09/11/2023 10:44

Just checking if any Home student has received offer from Warwick for Bsc Economics. Thanks

EleanorSidgwick · 09/11/2023 10:53

Would also like to hear if anyone has been offered Economics & Politics from Warwick

UZS · 09/11/2023 11:18

Wondering if any History applicants to Cambridge have received an email about the HAA (history entrance exam) which I read is scheduled for Nov 23 (two weeks from today).

Jaxx · 09/11/2023 13:31

@uzs nothing hard here. Not concerned yet as his college historically seems mid to late with interview invites.

Plantpotpot · 09/11/2023 18:36

Which colleges are ‘historically’ late when inviting for interviews? I keep seeing people mentioning them but are there any examples?

Plantpotpot · 09/11/2023 18:36

And also maybe the early ones!

mrsconradfisher · 09/11/2023 18:57

Just joining to say we are nervously waiting here. DS is applying with grades in hand of A star A A in Psychology, PE and Geography. It’s a long story and I’ve had several threads on it but he desperately wants to go to Loughborough to do Sports Science. Got rejected last year as only predicted AAA and they only offer with A star AA. Ended up getting 2 subjects remarked in the summer so now on a Gap Year as he had finally got the grades needed.
He has only applied to Loughborough and Bath this time, UCAS went in on Tuesday. I’m hopeful that with actual grades he won’t have to wait too long for a reply. I feel as though we have been in this weird limbo for a year (since he applied last time) so just want to know one way or another now.

What was the offer, do you know?

ButDaddyILoveHim · 09/11/2023 19:27

DS has just had an unconditional from Strathclyde for Politics and IR. He's RUK with grades in hand. Very pleased!
