University offers coming in?

1000 replies

WombatChocolate · 27/09/2023 09:54

Just for nosiness and due to excitement about DS’s application going in, wondered if we could have a thread with people sharing offers as they are received, during this early phase.

Has anyone had an offer yet? Who will be first?

And totally realise that most won’t have applied yet and won’t do so for months and that’s absolutely fine and more normal.

Firstly, congrats! Can I ask in what subject? Many thanks

Memba · 06/11/2023 16:11

DD just received this from Leeds (Law with French Law) She's predicted AStar AStar A and has one offer for same subject from Birmingham.

She's actually pleased to have been told she's going to have to wait for this one!

University offers coming in?
TheOnlyMrsW · 06/11/2023 16:35

Oh ggggrrrr DD has had a meeting with her form tutor today and her reference is still not ready to go!!!!! The put them all under immense pressure to get their PS's done by the first week in October and applications still can't go in 😡. I realise that teachers and school staff have huge workloads but can't believe that they don't start these things earlier - it's not like it's a surprise that they're needed

Newgirls · 06/11/2023 16:46

We were told that it would take until mid Dec to get all the statements done - they have over 150 people in the sixth form so it does make sense. Hard for those waiting though

Jaxx · 06/11/2023 17:22

I have to say reading these threads makes me very grateful for the support my son’s (state) school provides. The teachers start to compile references at the end of Y12 when they have more time to spare. There are 134 in his year and 70 Ucas forms (including 33 early applicants) had been submitted before half term. The SLT member who insists on signing off on all applications, had to take a week off sick which makes it even more impressive. It is personal statements rather than references that are likely to cause delays.

stoneysongs · 06/11/2023 17:49

That is impressive @Jaxx
I think starting early is key. DD did early entry and even then they didn't start talking about the PS until this term.

Hats off to the UCAS coordinators - I wouldn't fancy trying to get coherent PSs out of a large bunch of teenagers!

PumpkinKnitter · 06/11/2023 18:05

@Calmmumnot Neuroscience. She also just got an offer in from Warwick so it seems to be a day for it! Now for a long wait for Edinburgh, which is likely to be her first choice if she gets an offer, but it is a very oversubscribed course and they have a reputation for being very slow. She has also applied for Oxford as a long shot. Realistically it now looks like either Edinburgh / Bristol or Bristol / Exeter as firm and insurance.

TheOnlyMrsW · 06/11/2023 18:05

@Jaxx that's what I don't understand about DD's school - their references are co-written by form and subject tutors so a lot of co-ordination needed plus a number like DD have a mitigating circumstances element to be incorporated would have thought that they'd start at the end of Y12 or at least the beginning of Y13. Apart from early entry DD's form tutor hasn't started yet so will be likely the end of this month before it's finished and ready to be uploaded - but they've been on at the children regarding statements since before the summer

They're great on the whole but this has infuriated me (and DD)

lifeturnsonadime · 06/11/2023 18:51

DS has just had an offer from KCL which is where he really wants to go if his shot at Oxford doesn't come off. Phew!

Lightsabre · 06/11/2023 19:49

Great news for those receiving offers today and in the last few days - there seems to be a bit of momentum now.

sammyjoanne · 06/11/2023 20:26

DD2 applied last year for zoology/animal behaviour. She chose Reading as firm and Chester as insurance. September this year she went to Reading and got homesick, so shes now taking a gap year, has a temporary job and has applied to her local unis of Derby (Zoology) and Nottingham trent uni (Zoo Biology). Shes got an unconditional to Nottingham trent as shes got her grades in August. Shes just waiting on Derby, although her heart is set on NTU.

BiancaBlank · 06/11/2023 21:18

@Memba DD2 applied to Leeds for Law and German Law last year, and it was her last offer to come through - at the end of March (so after the offer holder day, helpfully). By that time she’d already decided she wanted to go to Warwick anyway!

Not sure whether she got that holding email though.

Memba · 06/11/2023 21:49

Oooh thank you @BiancaBlank that's helpful to know!

DD really liked Warwick - is yours happy there so far? Can you remember if they offered early?

SuccessM · 07/11/2023 11:37

My daughter just got rejected today from LSE for BSC Economics. Reason they stated is that her personal statement is not competitive enough. She achieved 11 9's in GCSE and predicted 4A*s for Maths, Further Maths, Economics and French. Please if anyone is interested in applying to LSE and hasn't yet, please research more on what they're looking for in personal statement and include all of it. I thought my daughter's personal statement was OK. Her teachers read it and thought it was OK but not good enough for LSE. Anyone that is yet to submit should seriously research what they want and include it before sending the application. I believe God knows the best for her and will get her into the right uni for her.

stoneysongs · 07/11/2023 11:45

Commiserations @SuccessM
Economics at LSE is ridiculously competitive, I think less than 10% get an offer. Good advice re doing the research for the PS - do they give good information about what they're looking for and is it different from what a DC might write for their other choices? It can be so difficult to cater to all five choices without compromising your chances at the most competitive.

Livinghappy · 07/11/2023 11:53

@SuccessM so disappointing to have a rejection but LSE seem to favour international students as over 70% are international. I hope your daughter has other options that she will be happy with, her academic history is excellent so she will get great offers.

Lightsabre · 07/11/2023 12:33

Sorry to hear your news @SuccessM - as the others have said this is one the most competitive courses in the country and attracts a lot of international applicants too. With her academic record I'm sure she'll do well with her other offers.

Jaxx · 07/11/2023 13:41

@SuccessM wow that is tough! She will get other offers with an academic record like that and may end up having a much better university experience than if she had been successful. Rejection hurts, but least they have done it early and not kept her hanging.

BiancaBlank · 07/11/2023 13:50

@Memba DD really enjoying Warwick and she loves her mooting! She liked the feel of the place on offer-holder day and how approachable everyone was - and especially that they had special sessions for the candidates doing the language option (unlike eg Exeter, where there was hardly any mention and nothing about the year abroad). They clearly took it seriously.

The offer came through end of Nov. Good luck to your DD!

UZS · 07/11/2023 14:47

Your daughter is obviously an academic powerhouse and will be enormously successful wherever she attends university and beyond

ShanghaiDiva · 07/11/2023 15:17

@SuccessM
your dd’s grades and predictions are excellent and she is clearly very smart. Hopefully she will hear from other choices soon.

notfeelingcreative · 07/11/2023 15:33

@successM DS in the same situation. Just rejected from LSE Economics - already achieved 4 A stars inc. Fmaths (and 11 9's). School thought PS was excellent. Honestly I really wonder how many spaces there are for home students. Also, really niggled here that they asked what other admission tests the students were taking (TSA or TMUA) so that basically tells them if people are going for Cambridge or Oxford and that's sneaky. Maybe because my DS was going for Oxford that was seen as less mathsy?!?. I also wonder if the people doing the filtering are even economists. DS definitely ticked all the boxes for what they are looking for (as described on their website and watched their presentations on the PS on-line) - had various supracurriculars woven into a narrative but it obviously didn't read as they wanted?!? Somewhat depressing though to have achieved 4 A stars and the first thing to come through is an early rejection. Women are MASSIVELY under-represented in economics so all the best to your daughter with her application and her A levels.

Newgirls · 07/11/2023 16:02

I wonder what the % of uk students actually getting offers at LSE is. Sounds ridiculously difficult to get in. I hope they do take a good % of women and of state school applicants as they clearly get excellent candidates

Newgirls · 07/11/2023 16:03

I would say though that an economics degree from anywhere will be valuable

ShanghaiDiva · 07/11/2023 16:08

@notfeelingcreative
it does make you wonder how many places there are for home vs overseas candidates.
