Following on from the A level support thread I thought I would create one for results day.
Hopefully you will all join me for the long nail biting wait and the big day at the end of it!

I think it takes a while to come down. Mine finished more than week ago and been on go ever since.. now calming a bit!

Forestfriendlygarden · 25/06/2023 17:36

Think you are right Possibly 67.
Reality of end of exams not really kicked in here.

Spottydressinggowngirl · 25/06/2023 21:48

Sorry to hear about your dog @HereWeGo2023 - they leave such big holes in family life.

dd is having a blast travelling and I’m doing well at resisting the urge to check on her every minute! We’ve just had a little trip away with the younger kids and it all feels a bit like practice for uni times!

exams and results feel quite far from our minds now and it’s a welcome break.

HereWeGo2023 · 24/06/2023 22:43

We’ve had a horrible week. Our 14 year old dog died on Tuesday. A much loved member of the family and very sadly missed, it was totally unexpected
so glad it didn’t happen during the exams, the lovely boy waited.

Oh no - what sad news :( I am so sorry for your loss.
We are only at the start of our dog owning journey with a 17 month old and after 15 months of him, I can't imagine life without him.

Big hugs xx

Orangesandlemons77 · 26/06/2023 15:49

It's just the first week after they have finished and DS has been mainly out with his mates

DH finished school at 16 and worked full time since, thinks he should be thinking about working. He has paying board at a younger age etc

Wondered what others thoughts on this are.

PacificState · 26/06/2023 16:01

I'm a total softie on this stuff @Orangesandlemons77 (just full disclosure!) but I don't think I know anyone who charges board/rent to their young people in the university holidays (which is effectively what this summer is for most of our young people). I think it would be pretty harsh.

Expecting him to get a job - I think that's probably a bit more within the range of normal parental behaviour (although I've never cared either way tbh). Building up some savings for discretionary spending at uni (drinking, clubbing, nice clothes etc) is pretty normal I think.

But I would let him have 2-3 weeks of letting off steam first!

mondaytosunday · 26/06/2023 16:23

Where I grew up (USA) it was pretty normal to have a part time job from 16, definitely over summer holidays! My son has worked part time all through college since he was 16. But I don't know anyone who charged their children rent or expenses - money was for going out or personal expenses or saved for university.
My daughter has turned 18 and I think she should do some job this summer, even if volunteer work at a charity shop. But she has recently been diagnosed with MS, so I'm not pushing it. And she never spends money, so she has no motivation there!
It's one thing having left education and working full time and living at home, another thing entirely working part time or minimum wage summer job in between full time uni.

Orangesandlemons77 · 26/06/2023 16:27

Yes this is kind of how I feel. I think it is maybe as DH never had that experience himself. In a way perhaps he is envious, I wonder.

I did go to university myself and did have a summer job but that was for fun money or to save up for myself.

Absolutely no to paying rent, he’s going to need all that money for Uni but absolutely should get a job. My DS has been working since the Summer after GCSE’s, his job let him just work once a week since start of May so he can concentrate on his exams but back to 2 jobs now. He is on holiday next week with his girlfriend which he paid for.

sammyjoanne · 26/06/2023 20:38

Hi DD2 has finished her Alevels last week. She took Biology, Psychology and Geography. Degree choice is Reading for Zoology first choice, and Animal Behaviour at Chester.

sammyjoanne · 26/06/2023 20:57

Sorry to hear about your dog @HereWeGo2023 xx
I just been reading some of the latest posts. Totally relate to the stress and the nerves. DD1 went through the CAG of 2020, so this is the first time we had to go through the A'level exams with DD2.

ZittiEBuoni · 27/06/2023 07:12

DD still having a ball in Porto so we are missing tonight's year 13 prizegiving Sad. It's pathetic but I feel really cheated...

HappySonHappyMum · 27/06/2023 10:17

@ZittiEBuoni I'd have felt cheated too - that would make me just as pathetic!

lastdayatschool · 27/06/2023 13:17

I'm now counting down the next 7 days - hoping they go quickly - my DS flew off to Corfu at 4am today with 16 other boys from school.

The stress of waiting for results day is paling into insignificance at this point 🙃

AfingeroffudgeisNOTenough · 27/06/2023 13:24

@ZittiEBuoni our prize days are always in September/October so if DD ends up with a prize she’ll have to decide whether to come back from uni for the ceremony. I’m not going to lie - I wouldn’t be bothered in the slightest if she didn’t. (Although seeing the variety of outfits from returning U6th pupils is a highlight of the day - some girls invariably wear outfits more suited to a nightclub, some guys are always in suits, then there’s the ones who turn up in jeans and a wrinkled t-shirt and look like they’ve just rolled out of bed and can’t be arsed at all! There’s also always one who makes a bet with someone to do something stupid on stage)

I really wouldn’t be sad to miss it though - Prize Day is so dull! DD2 regularly just misses out - coming in 2nd/3rd/4th in a subject and we’ve told her to keep it up - doing well enough to be up at the top of the year, but not so well that we have to endure prize day Wink

Handhold!

It's a process isn't it?
Still doing the prep for DD's trip to Valencia for language course in July.
It will be her first trip abroad and she is to stay with a family there. Still, it seems very well organised and hope it will be fun. There are dancing lessons, cookery and yoga etc as well as festivals on the beach, so hoping it will make up for Covid.

(And I would like to go too!) Still I'll appreciate the time at home. Not much time to turn around here since we moved in last winter so will appreciate some down time.

PacificState · 27/06/2023 15:19

@lastdayatschool 16 boys! That's going to be EPIC. (I'm sure all will be fine.) DS2 is off to Amsterdam with four friends (all boys) - I'm sure they will spend a lot of time in the amazing museums and art galleries

lastdayatschool · 27/06/2023 15:36

Yes @PacificState, no coffee shops at all I bet 😂

PacificState · 27/06/2023 15:46

Nononononononononooooo

NotDonna · 27/06/2023 16:10

Sorry to hear of your DDs recent diagnosis @mondaytosunday Im a soft touch re them having jobs too but in your position I’d want her well rested. My DD has a little bar job, which is VERY infrequent but they’re training her and paying her so…

BellsaRinging · 27/06/2023 16:39

It's a wrap! DS finally finished yesterday and has been MIA/in bed since. I'm giving him the week-end of school dinner and 'celebrations' on Friday and then that's it. No idea how he's done but he starts an epprenticship in September anyway and so Uni, if he makes his grades, is some way away.
We've got a couple of family holidays and in between he will pick up shifts in his current job. A summer of chill before work starts for real in September!

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 27/06/2023 18:39

That’s great BellsaRinging - what a long slog. My DD is starting to think about A level choices and I am biting my tongue so as not to put her off RS because this year’s A level exams went on so late.

My DS is off to Spain next week with his school friends. I am terrified! Will be a relief when they get back safely.

SabrinaThwaite · 27/06/2023 18:41

My eldest went interrailing after exams with some mates - I was amazed that they did actually do museums and galleries and bike tours and zoos and culture (as well as all the other stuff 🙄).

Youngest that finished his exams last week was looking forward to a big night out last night to celebrate everyone finally finishing - but he managed to get concussed on Sunday so everything is on hold whilst he recovers.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 27/06/2023 22:45

Ds finished his exams on Friday and since then has built a website, graded as second dan in a martial art and played lots of computer games! I don't think he knows how to stop doing stuff!

Forestfriendlygarden · 28/06/2023 08:51

It's weird isn't it? I've learned my DD has this unfortunate habit of taking a lot on, consistently. Sometimes too much.

Just wish they would stop and smell the roses occasionally...
