Hi all sorry I've not engaged much. We are in the midst of DSA and student support type stuff. None of it joined up!
Trying to work out the finances on minimum loan and what we need to try to find

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 08/06/2024 10:08

@OneFrenchEgg hopefully once you actually get to DSA assessor it will all fall into place. We've found it to be easier than at school in terms of availability of support. Hope you do too.

That sounds promising. It's been quite stressful as they are not organised or really able to process things quickly so don't check for emails/assume I have them etc. Separate applications for DSA, uni and accommodation 🤷‍♀️

mondaytosunday · 08/06/2024 11:39

Gosh @OneFrenchEgg my DD has applied for DSA but don't think she's even read the follow up email even though I've hassled her! She's still in the throes of final FAD project, exhibit is the 20th, but yesterday went to a primary school up in north London as they are doing a mural. Teams of five each day. Plied with Dutch biscuits and 'orange juice' which had less than 4% orange! But she has firmed Durham finally and got her SFE amount, And found out there's an income related bursary which will help, plus she had a list if a few scholarships she can apply to though they are mostly international so chances low.
@FancyFanny glad the decision has been made! There's a chance my DD might have to share a room (she can't rule it out), a shared bathroom would be much more agreeable! I think there's only a few hundred pounds difference between shared room and a single.

Okisenough · 08/06/2024 13:07

@OneFrenchEgg your post has reminded me that I also have to look into applying for DSA, I've procrastinated a lot partly as I am a bit burnt out. I guess I should crack on with it.

OneFrenchEgg · 08/06/2024 13:13

@mondaytosunday oh keep hassling! We have one booked for two weeks time. It all just feels a bit stressful; uni also want an interview so hopefully they all join up in the end.

Yes do, you apply through SFE at the same time as the maintenance and tuition loan to start the process.

UnimaginableWindBird · 16/06/2024 08:16

Hello. Can I join in?.I'm just st the open day stage. DD is at the end of Y12 and we're starting to look around for costume design/construction courses. She's planning on doing a foundation course locally so has time to look around, but I'm realizing just how little I know about how to judge a good art and design course.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 16/06/2024 13:59

Hi @UnimaginableWindBird Nice to meet you. I have a dd a year behind yours. She’s not sure if she wants to go to art school or just try being an artist (the confidence of youth!)

Soma · 16/06/2024 14:08

Welcome @UnimaginableWindBird , I've heard really good things about AUB's costume & construction courses.

UnimaginableWindBird · 16/06/2024 16:09

Yeah, AUB looks fantastic, with some really impressive alumni, and a good emphasis on making and historical costuming which DD is really interested in. I'm less happy about the 12 hour travel time between Yorkshire and Bournemouth, but I went across a sea to go to university, so I'm not in any position to complain.

Soma · 16/06/2024 16:36

@UnimaginableWindBird I forgot to mention Royal Central School of Speech & Drama in London has an excellent costume department. Costume Construction, BA | The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (cssd.ac.uk)

Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama's Design for Performance with a specialism in costume might be worth a look as it's closer to you. BA (Hons) Design for… | Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (rwcmd.ac.uk)

Also the Royal Opera House have a costume design apprenticeship which pays £25k. Not sure if they recruit yearly, but this year's application is closed. But by way as an example: Royal Opera House hiring COSTUME MAKING APPRENTICESHIP Job in London, England | Glassdoor

BA (Hons) Design for Performance

Explore all the elements of set and costume design for theatre, events, TV and film in this intensive practical and performance-based course.

Hi @UnimaginableWindBird, welcome aboard! I have nothing to add... but a while ago I gathered all the information I could find about Arts/Design in general and summarised it here, and that might be helpful?

Just at the opening night of the Morley show (Chelsea College of Creative Industry). It is not just the FAD students. But gosh so impressive! This fashion item was done by a student on the two year level three diploma (16-18 year old). The hat is just one of several amazing examples (the college is known for millinery). This may be by a more mature student. A fabulous print from the 'Exploring print' class. A still from my DD's animation.
It's on til the 26th so drop by if you are in London!

@mondaytosunday wow! The standard is so high, it all looks great.

FancyFanny · 23/06/2024 23:07

Great examples @mondaytosunday -very impressive work.

My DD has not been able to get a place in UAL halls- she's got one more chance at the next allocation day in July but otherwise it's going to have to be private accommodation.

It's very frustrating when 50% of students are foreign and they get priority guaranteed places in halls. I'm not sure why they should as it seems very unfair. I can only imagine they need to make everything as easy as possible for them so they don't risk losing the massive amount of funding they bring to the university. It's so unfair on UK students though.

Duchessofmuchness · 24/06/2024 13:12

Great to see updates from everyone as the weeks pass.

@mondaytosunday impressive work.

We attended DS end year show also - first time I had seen his work "in the flesh" and was great to see others work also. Such a range of different ideas and executions. For anyone considering art foundation would say definitely consider local college if living at home another year is a consideration for maturity or cost reasons. It worked really well for DS snd he got excellent support from the tutors to develop.

@FancyFanny - sorry to hear you are still waiting on accommodation for UAL. I agree it's v off that international students should get priority- simply not fair treatment. Especially as I would judge that some of the options not even in consideration for domestic students (£500 pw for 50 weeks!). DS has fortunately been allocated a spot and it's workable for the cost and commute (he needs to get to Stratford). I can imagine how stressful it is waiting. If it's helpful at all we know someone who got her place in clearing last year for a ual college and got her accommodation a week or so before term started. She was phoning to chase accommodation in those weeks. So places do open up but hard to wait that long. I know you wanted shared bathroom and really not many of those as far as we could see. In the end we only found 3 that were in our budget and reasonable commute.

Dd is home for the holidays and we managed to get to a local framer's with her painting that has been selected for a touring exhibition. It was quite exciting looking at the frame options and deciding on one. It feels very odd to leave her work with them though; we haven't done that before!

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 26/06/2024 06:16

Exciting times.
Love that animation MondaytoSunday.

Except for blummin accommodation issues. Fingers crossed @FancyFanny that accommodation is sorted in next round but it's horrible feeling less of a priority.

We've been to Goldsmiths open day which was lovely especially with an offer in hand. We could be very relaxed and take it all in.

Some consternation in the audience that you really do have to have foundation (or btec diploma). No exceptions unless mature student. And no they don't provide a foundation for home students but also don't favour any foundation course, don't have feeder courses, look at your local collage, it's all about your work.

OneFrenchEgg · 26/06/2024 06:21

Hi all, accomodation issues here too / medical evidence appears to have been ignored and not issued the one they applied for. No idea if we just accept and appeal or what.

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 26/06/2024 11:42

@OneFrenchEgg I guess it depends if it's suitable? Has your DC or you spoken to accommodation office? Do they run waiting lists?

Day appl8edfor 7 places but yet to hear outcome. Because Newcross/Peckham is vibrant/gritty depending on your point of view, there seemed to be a lot of accommodation close to campus except the rather l9vely converted Camberwell town hall which was 20 minutes away by bus.

mondaytosunday · 26/06/2024 15:05

@FriendlyLaundryMonster I have loads of my kids' work framed. Makes it look 'complete', even though I go for very simple framing, usually either black or white. I have several of my DD's GCSE work framed (haven't gotten around to A level work, though few are flat pieces so tricky) and both kids work going back to primary - they used to go to an arty day camp during half terms and did some lovely work.
It's a great way for preserving work - I even have a framed pastel drawing my sister did when she was about ten - she's 64 now!

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 26/06/2024 15:29

@mondaytosunday I'm sure this will be the first of many for us too! Mainly, I think we will need to frame paintings, so we can hang them as we will run out of storage space; the only space is on walls!

En suite requested and medically supported, no en-suite offered.
Over £6000 😮 and as they only checked spam today and the deadline is tomorrow we've had to accept it and then email. No one picked up today or returned their call.
