My DD has a confirmation of her place at UAL- she didn't have to upload her foundation results as far as I'm aware?

socks1107 · 15/08/2024 14:00

Dd got her first choice drama at Greenwich. Well done to everyone else

Was she doing level 3 or 4? DS did level 4 and for some reason that one not automatically reported to UCAS but Level 3 is. I realised this during some frantic searching late last night!

Well done all and glad your DD has chosen Herts @Okisenough!
My DD also got a Distinction for her Art Foundation, as did her friends. Doesn't affect her next step but pleased all her hard work paid off.
Now waiting to hear about accommodation and fingers crossed she does not get reallocated to another college (Durham). Not buying anything (catered) other than under bed storage and bed linen once we find out the bed size - we will see what she needs once we get there.

Yes, level 3- that must explain it!

UnimaginableWindBird · 15/08/2024 22:36

Congratulations to everyone receiving results today! DD has done well in her AS levels, and now it's time to start planning open days and working on her portfolio. I can hear the sewing machine in the background as she's making a dress right now, so that's probably a good start.

WhippyLongStocking · 16/08/2024 07:52

I must have used 2 usernanes here and its making me use a different one.

anyway Hannahdefoestrenchcoat here with another distinction in diploma here and happy DC off to Goldsmiths.

Congratulations everyone's DC and good luck with next steps and their creative lives whether that's at uni or outside it.

UnimaginableWindBird · 16/08/2024 12:50

I think there was a username glitch as I made a post on a different thread yesterday that showed up under an old name.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 17/08/2024 19:56

Dd is currently on a week-long art residency and I'm using the time to try and find an art degree that doesn't have a strong conceptual focus! I came across this article, and thought it may be interesting to others on this thread. it's a long read, but even the conclusions are worth reading (imo). Also, wondering if anyone has any knowledge on Heatherley's School of Fine Art or The Art Academy? We have had her portrait framed for the upcoming touring exhibition she's in, so that's quite exciting too!

Acinonyx2 · 18/08/2024 12:27

@FriendlyLaundryMonster interesting read. I think we have exchanged views before - our dds are both somewhat disinterested in modern/abstract/conceptual art (except she is now doing concept art which is not actually what we think of as concept art at all...). Dd could have been very at home in the Renaissance - if only she had been a man and actually allowed to paint. I guess all eras have their pros and cons...

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 18/08/2024 13:58

@Acinonyx2 May I ask where your dd chose to study? Did you have a good idea before starting that the course wouldn't have such a strong conceptual focus? Or that it could be interpreted as such!

Acinonyx2 · 18/08/2024 14:46

She's at Herts doing concept art - which (took me a long time to understand this) does not mean what you think it means (so she'll be a year above Okis's dd). It's basically storyboarding and characters and has nothing to do with conceptual art as such. Dd is crazy keen on digital art and fantasy. If she had been looking to do fine art I think we would have struggled to find somewhere to suit her - but much I wish she would carry on with 'proper' painting she prefers digital. History of art would completely finish her off. I worry endlessly about whether she will actually get a job but that's a whole other tale...

PhotoDad · 18/08/2024 15:29

Yes, "concept art" is illustration applied to films/games/TV! My DD was considering that but ended up with a more general illustration course. As I've mentioned before they actually had drawing classes (life and locations) and even a foreign trip specifically to draw. She really wouldn't have got on well with Fine Art as it's taught in most places.

As for the job thing, @Acinonyx2, that's the next big step and we're ahead of most people on this thread by a year. DD has various plans. We'll see.

Acinonyx2 · 18/08/2024 15:47

Yes, and dd had life drawing classes as well and they also do old style drawing.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 18/08/2024 20:15

I really need to look in to some of the illustration courses, although dd is adamant she doesn't want to do it. The content does sound interesting.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 27/08/2024 14:39

How is everyone doing? Summer has been quite busy here! Dd has launched a website and an art instagram. It’s early days, but good to start having something out there, she thinks. We’ve also been researching more around traditional art skills and have discovered ARC (Art Renewal Centre) which is a significant advocate of continuing to teach in this way. Going to see an Atelier at the end of the week, probably just for a short course. But, it does also offer full time study, so just finding out what’s out there.

UnimaginableWindBird · 27/08/2024 14:52

DD is going into Y13 so we're trying to book open days this autumn for costume design and construction degree courses while working around the train strikes, and DD has to sort out her portfolio to apply for her foundation year. Plus general A level work.

Travel to open days is horrifically expensive though. Yorkshire - Bournemouth is not going to be a regular journey, even if she does end up living there.

PhotoDad · 27/08/2024 15:38

DD has spent most of her summer in her teenytiny room at uni with a few weeks up here to see us, and one travelling with a friend. She's currently working on a small book-cover commission, and is volunteering a lot at a museum, which has indeed become her Plan B if a freelance career doesn't pan out. She's thinking of training to become a Conservator in either textiles or ceramics, but that would be another two years! So she'll try the day-job-and-freelance life for a bit after graduation (which is only this time next year; where does the time go?)

Okisenough · 27/08/2024 16:34

@PhotoDad I know right? I remember talking about open days for my eldest and now my youngest one is going to University and I have a graduate child!!!

Good luck to all your dcs whatever their next step

PhotoDad · 28/08/2024 21:11

DD has been rediscovering painting, having spent a lot of time last year using pencils or digital work! She's very much narrowing in on Children's Book styles. These two are illustrations for her own stories.

Hey everyone,

How are our talented DC doing as the new academic year starts? DD is excited to be going into Third Year. Thanks to her voluntary work at a museum, her plan has narrowed in on doing a Master's in Textile Conservation. But first she'll take a belated gap year back at home after the BA to do some personal projects and to save for more tuition fees.

Okisenough · 18/09/2024 16:21

@PhotoDad that sounds like a plan! Good luck to your dd for her third year.

We haven't started our academic year yet, lol, starts next week and moving dd in at the weekend. I am nervous about it but also positive. Will update you once she has settled in and got to grips with her course.

Wishing all dc and parents on this thread all the best, and hope it continues to help those thinking about going down a creative route. Keep us updated on how your dc do during and after their degrees!

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 18/09/2024 18:47

Good luck to all dc for the new academic year. Dd has just started year 12 and is thrilled to be shortlisted for the Scottish Portrait Awards and nominated for Young Fine Artist. She is the youngest artist exhibiting in their touring exhibition, so we're overjoyed for her. She's also visiting the Ruskin this weekend at their open day; anyone else's dc attending?

PhotoDad · 18/09/2024 19:55

Good luck, @Okisenough! And, that's amazing, @FriendlyLaundryMonster! I do enjoy hearing about our wonderful DC.

Duchessofmuchness · 19/09/2024 19:02

Good luck to all for the start of the new academic year. Hope those starting on new journeys settle in well. Dropped DS off at the weekend - he's not been particularly good about communicating since then. Think he's fully embracing the party side of freshers. Shock It doesn't even officially start until next week but we'd paid for his accommodation so he wanted to go!
