DD has to sort out her portfolio for FAD applications, but she doesn't seem to be under a big time pressure compared to the people doing UCAS stuff. I will get her to talk to her art tutor next week to work out a timeline.

I may already have said but try to have portfolios roughly ready before submitting application as some places only give a short time to upload portfolio.

They all have slightly different requirements in terms of in person or digital, number of images, number of words, size of file and type of platform used to upload. 🤯😱😬

WhippyLongStocking · 05/10/2024 15:21

@UnimaginableWindBird sorry. The above applies to degree applications. Some of it may apply to FAD but I've not had experience of that.

How do the in person portfolios even work? That sounds a bit crazy!

@WhippyLongStocking Pretty much all of dd's work is on canvas. She paints in oil on sometimes quite large canvas frames. This would be a nightmare! Sounds ok if it's a few sketchbooks. I'm not looking forward to that stage!

WhippyLongStocking · 05/10/2024 19:05

You can take good quality photos and prints of a reasonable size. Printing on good quality paper isn't cheap though.

PhotoDad · 07/10/2024 21:25

DD's portfolios were all uploaded, including photographs of paintings etc. I wonder how many places are moving back to asking for physical portfolios? (The word started out meaning a case to carry a physical "full sized" piece of paper, as in Shakespeare's First Folio...)

Cp2324 · 10/10/2024 19:25

DC only had one uni of their five ask them to interview with a physical portfolio (Falmouth). Everywhere else made offers on the basis of an online portfolio - all with different requirements in terms of what they wanted, how many images, how it was to be sent / uploaded and whether they wanted text / explanations or not. It was an incredibly fiddly task.

Best tips:

Have a basic portfolio ready before the UCAS form is submitted as portfolio submission deadlines can be a matter of only a week or two post request.

Unless you're applying for Oxbridge, don't submit before January to give yourself maximum opportunity to include some very recent work (especially if doing an art foundation). You will need the Xmas holidays to work on the portfolios in any case.

Set out your basic portfolio as a series of PowerPoint slides which can be edited / reordered / chopped / text added as per the individual requirements of each university.

Read the requirements carefully so you submit exactly what they have asked for. When they say they want to see experimentation and processes as well as finished page, they do mean it. Usually a mixture of sketchbook pages and finished pieces are requested.

Diarise submission deadlines and perfect each portfolio in a sensible order.

(DC ended up with offers from everywhere they applied)

So, we managed to take dd to two open days today in two different cities. As I mentioned before, all Scottish art schools had strangely chosen the same day for Open day. It was a bit hectic, but really useful and we were quite taken with one option. So, that's good. We also handed in another of her paintings for framing a couple of days ago and she's chosen a really nice dark wooden frame which really sets it up, so looking forward to seeing it in exhibition. Hope all's progressing well for everyone.

UnimaginableWindBird · 17/11/2024 09:10

We just went to the UAL Wimbledon open day and DD loved it, so I be think that's going to be her too choice, and they have good information about portfolio and interview, so it was a very useful day. No free tote bags, though.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 24/11/2024 22:26

Dd has had a bit of a whirlwind few days and has had a photo of her artwork appear in one of the national papers (online) as part of an exhibition she’s in! She’s taking it all in her stride but it was quite exciting watching her do the photoshoot! She also had a commission collected today, which the person loved. So, all moving in the right direction. Cass Art will be doing some Black Friday offers of up to 20% off, if that helps anyone.
