We weren't impressed by the UAL shows last year either @ArtGarfield. We came out thinking the art was more concept than actual pieces, the fashion unwearable and the films just plain boring. And my DD said on leaving 'why do art students think they need to be so "wacky"'? In fact, Ravensbourne had the best! Certainly the best fashion: creative, interesting, but also wearable. That's not to say it isn't a good course - I know many love it and happily stay on to do their degrees at UAL.
She says the Morley show is on the 20th June and run for a few days, but whether it will be st the Chelsea Centre or the Waterloo gallery they haven't decided yet.
She handed in her written slides yesterday (kinda like the written research part of the EPQ). 139 slides and 27,000 words!!! Now she just had to do the actual piece! She slept til 3pm today.

mondaytosunday · 19/05/2024 10:36

I meant the it's not to say the the UAL course isn't good - sorry it didn't read properly.

Duchessofmuchness · 20/05/2024 22:34

DS submitted for his FAD overnight before his 9am deadline. Always stressful for us but less so for him. He's done bar the end of year show. Now to wait for a result to know if he's heading to LCF/UAL or Kingston. Both would be great but we won't know until results day I guess!

A few days for him to destress and then I need him to clear up the artistic mess of last few months!

@Duchessofmuchness both great options for your DS. Well done to him.

Still crawling through UCAS extra here and actively considering FAD at excellent local college

FancyFanny · 21/05/2024 17:12

Oh yes @Duchessofmuchness , the artistic mess! DD's room is like a full on art studio! Not only the mess from all the creation, but stuff she collects too- posters, bric a black, vintage clothes, plants etc. Not gonna lie- I'm looking forward to her taking some of it to university with her!

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 21/05/2024 19:27

@FancyFanny it all comes back, with yet more stuff. My DS bedroom at home is a bomb site still. And at the end of every term more stuff is added.....and collected....

This! Some of the stuff has gone into the loft, we can't be tripping over it until September. The washing is ongoing, I can't believe how many pairs of socks she has, all of which are hanging on the drying rack rather than outside as it's pouring with rain here🙄But it is honestly wonderful to have her home again.

DD going to do graphic communications and having to decide between UAL (Chelsea) and Glasgow. Both courses fit the bill. Is one institution seen as very much better than the other or are they pretty level? She's favouring UAL due to location and her "gut" feeling.

Here's a link from a reply I posted last month which might help. For those applying for Graphic Design, Illustration, Vis Com courses - The Student Room

Thank you @soma. That's interesting reading and has made me feel a lot more at ease. My DM says DD will do well wherever she goes - I think so too (totally biased of course!). DD is VERY excited about "spending all my time doing something I love". It's wonderful to see.

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 24/05/2024 08:55

@Soma thank you for posting that link. It was super helpful., especially the comments about league tables and creative subjects.

DS is applying for Fine Art but it was still very useful.

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 29/05/2024 22:59

Very pleased ro report in to say that DS's UCAS Extra nerve wracking gamble has paid off. 😁

He has accepted an offer from Goldsmiths for Fine Art and Art History. No insurance as you only get to apply to one place at a time.

He asked about the strikes and the cuts and the impact on the Art department and seems sufficiently reassured. He is very excited now.

Phew. What a marathon.

Thank you to all the supportive and knowledgeable people on this thread. The whole area is new to me.

mondaytosunday · 30/05/2024 00:59

Good news @HannahDefoesTrenchcoat!

PhotoDad · 30/05/2024 06:45

Congratulations to @HannahDefoesTrenchcoat DS!

DD is currently at home for the week and has spent most of the time asleep. It's hard work, this art/design stuff, isn't it?

Philandbill · 30/05/2024 07:09

@HannahDefoesTrenchcoat fantastic. That must be a relief.
DD is home and has started her summer commissions so there is now a Hansel and Gretel style trail of pieces of cotton and thread between her room and the kitchen table and bits of pattern drafting paper left on the sitting room floor "because that space is bigger than my room and I need to spread out". It is great to have her home though. 😁

Okisenough · 31/05/2024 11:16

@HannahDefoesTrenchcoat congrats to you both. What a relief!

And that art spread is real!

FancyFanny · 31/05/2024 17:38

Well done your DS @HannahDefoesTrenchcoat!

My dd finally had her interview with Newcastle today and they made her an offer straight away! So now she's got some decision making to do- it sounds like she's going to discard Manchester and decide between Newcastle and Chelsea- both very different opportunities but pros and cons to both. Watch this space...

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 31/05/2024 21:48

Congrats to your DD @FancyFanny
What a great dilemma to have. Very different places to live and pros and cons as you say.

I have reclaimed our table for the first time since the New Year.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 01/06/2024 12:51

Can I ask if any of your dc exhibited their A Level work or took part in competitions that weren't in school and how did this work with not being allowed to share A level coursework on social media etc? Even physically obtaining it to exhibit seems an issue, as schools are supposed to retain coursework until after results and moderation? Just wondering how this works in practice. Our dd is a bit younger and just wondering if she needs to do enough work 'not for her A level' to be able to enter in to competitions and things to build up an art name?

FancyFanny · 01/06/2024 15:38

My DD didn't do much work outside of her A-level as there wasn't really any extra time to do so. A-levels are quite intensive and she had a lot of homework and revision for her academic subjects as well, even though she spent a disproportionate amount of time on her Art A-level. She's never really gone in for competitions outside of school.

FancyFanny · 01/06/2024 15:40

DD wouldn't even let me take photos of her work as she was terrified of it getting on social media.

Okisenough · 01/06/2024 16:30

@FriendlyLaundryMonster I would keep the two things separate and yes you won't be able to pick up work until results and longer if you want to appeal.

FancyFanny · 04/06/2024 07:28

Well, I think DD has made her decision and chosen Chelsea- mainly because it's London and the opportunities she perceives for exposure are better, it's a specialist arts university and she thinks it will be better to be totally surrounded by 'creative people'. The cost of accommodation though is making my eyes water 😪

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 04/06/2024 08:53

We've been having lots of London = shared bathroom conversations.

FancyFanny · 04/06/2024 17:31

London definitely = shared bathrooms for my DD as anything else is extortionate.
