University near(ish) a beach

We don't live anywhere near a beach and so DC would love to have reasonably easy access to one at uni. Somewhere you can walk to or take public transport to on a weekend day say, if you wake up and feel like it ( as opposed to needing to plan in advance and get up at 5am). Or even closer would be amazing.
They are looking at doing a traditional academic subject, so Bournemouth for example, although it looks fab, would probably not be the best choice. Beach proximity cannot be the first filter!

@PhotoDad - apologies, I actually didn't see that recommendation - it was few others. Tynemouth does has a lovely beach.

For those who think Durham is near a beach, it's not really. The closest one is 15 miles away (Seaham) so is a good car drive or 2 buses away

Crimdon beach which is nicer than Seaham is 12 miles away about 20 mins drive in car but yes an absolute nightmare by public transport. Much quicker to do train and metro to Tynemouth or Whitley Bay should the OPs DC change their mind about a University in the North.

Itstarts · 24/03/2023 19:10

Aberdeen. Beautiful beach. Just make sure she keeps the windows closed - we regularly had seagulls in the dorms!

ProggyMat · 24/03/2023 19:10

Actually just checked and Crimdon is about the same distance as Seaham - much nicer stretch of the East Durham coastline.

iamme21 · 24/03/2023 19:21

Liverpool? 20 minutes on the train to Crosby beach and the Iron Men.

jellybeanteaparty · 24/03/2023 19:31

Exeter to Exmouth 13minutes in train. Swansea, Southampton.

ZebraKid71 · 24/03/2023 19:49

I think swansea is the closest uni to the beach in the world. You can see it from campus and there is a bridge from the uni entrance across the road to it. It always ranks really highly in student surveys. My friend went there and whenever we went to visit it was great, always someone having a bbq, loads of outdoor and waterworks going on.

Aberystwyth nice too.

Liverpool? 20 minutes on the train to Crosby beach and the Iron Men.

Or 35 mins to West Kirby, from where (if you've checked the tide times) you can walk to Hilbre Island and probably see seals.

aslkde · 24/03/2023 19:51

Aberystwyth
Brighton
Southampton
St Andrews

woodlandtrees · 24/03/2023 19:53

Definitely Swansea!

GenExer · 24/03/2023 19:54

University of Brighton - you can literally walk down Lewes Road towards the Old Steine and the beach is right there with Brighton Palace Pier.

University of Sussex, Falmer - a bus ride away!

megletthesecond · 24/03/2023 19:56

You can cycle from Exeter to Exmouth.

Aberystwyth

Yep, my friend used to revise on the beach.

spanieleyes · 24/03/2023 19:59

My son was in student accommodation on the seafront during the huge gales 7-8 years ago. The beach, actually large pebbles rather than sand, ended up in their front garden! Roads were covered, promenade furniture destroyed and some flats flooded. Students had to be relocated to flats on the hill. Great fun was had by all!

spanieleyes · 24/03/2023 20:00

Sorry, that was in Aberystwyth!

Wombats23 · 24/03/2023 20:00

Also Edinburgh. Portobello nearby, gorgeous beaches as you go out to East Lothian.

SonnySideDown · 24/03/2023 20:04

Exeter University but the Penryn campus if the course he wants is available. You can't get more beachy than Cornwall!

Salisburyhill · 24/03/2023 20:56

They have checked and unfortunately Penryn don't offer anything of interest. But Exeter is a possibility. They already have a liking for Southampton. Looking at Maths or Music or both, possibly with a year abroad as taking French A level. Bit early for grades yet, school don't predict A stars at this point, but happy to predict A's at the moment. Lots of the non-northerly beach-friendly places are looking at something a little lower.

Swansea’s new campus practically has a private beach. The old campus is just literally across the road from Swansea Bay. Spoilt for choice as far as beaches are concerned in Swansea.

Pasadenadreaming · 24/03/2023 23:21

Definitely St Andrews! Gorgeous beaches and everything is walkable.

Honeyroar · 24/03/2023 23:38

I went to Swansea. There are many amazing beaches there. I blame the fact that I got a 2ii rather than a 2i on those beaches!

My stepson went to st Andrews, which also has lovely beaches (although not as pretty as The Gower hills).

Star81 · 24/03/2023 23:42

Glasgow. Only 40 min train ride to Troon or 55 mins to Ayr

Overeggingthepudding · 25/03/2023 04:20

Dc and friends got on a bus in Durham city centre to Seaham last summer for a day out after exams finished . It’s about 15 miles away . They said bus was cheap

garlictwist · 25/03/2023 05:40

Exeter is a very short train ride from exmouth. I spent many happy hours as a student at Exeter on that sandy beach!

And an even shorter train ride to Dawlish Warren, both beautiful beaches and just a gorgeous area in general. Exeter is a fab little city as well!
