University near(ish) a beach

We don't live anywhere near a beach and so DC would love to have reasonably easy access to one at uni. Somewhere you can walk to or take public transport to on a weekend day say, if you wake up and feel like it ( as opposed to needing to plan in advance and get up at 5am). Or even closer would be amazing.
They are looking at doing a traditional academic subject, so Bournemouth for example, although it looks fab, would probably not be the best choice. Beach proximity cannot be the first filter!

Brighton or Sussex.

Aberystwyth

UEA, Norfolk has some really lovely beaches, there is Gt Yarmouth & gorleston close to Norwich, (about 20 mins on a bus) but it also has a campus in kings lynn which has fantastic bus lines to loads of other lovely beaches all within 15-30 mins.

Falmouth (Exeter uni campus)
plymouth depending on course. City bit of a mess though!
st andrews amazing beaches.
aberdeen really great place to study.
edinburgh isn’t too far and lovely place to study.
durham. Never liked it, but near coast.
newcastle.

Know nothing about Wales, southeast or midlands…!

everyone should balance choices with what makes them happy, it’s easy to just focus on course ratings!

Dundee or St Andrews

Queens in Belfast. Helen's Bay is a 20 minute train ride from Botanic station, next to the University

MapleSyrupSweet · 24/03/2023 08:29

Sussex

Starchipenterprise · 24/03/2023 08:31

Another one for Newcastle particularly if you like seal or dolphin watching.

RancidChicken · 24/03/2023 08:36

St Andrews. St Andrews, St Andrews.

panacheofveg · 24/03/2023 08:37

Another vote for QUB. If walking is his thing he can get train to Holywood (10 minutes) and get off and walk 8ish miles along the coastal path to Bangor.

Aphrathestorm · 24/03/2023 08:37

St Andrews is literally on the beach.

Some of these are daft! An hour's journey from campus to beaches!!

Moominmammacat · 24/03/2023 08:45

The beach at Exmouth on the little train was probably the best thing about Exeter. Cardiff has a wonderful coastline but no proper beach in the city. Swansea has a lovely bay as does Aberystwyth.

Bangor. Easy to pop over to Anglesey for a huge choice of beaches.

This. Lovely place to go to university. Also has easy access to the mountains of Snowdonia.

carriedout · 24/03/2023 08:50

Newcastle
Bangor
Aberystwyth
Lancaster
Brighton

Quite a nice list!

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 24/03/2023 08:52

Sussex. Beach is rubbish and stony though.

piedbeauty · 24/03/2023 08:53

St Andrews.

Minimalme · 24/03/2023 09:11

Newcastle. We've just relocated up her newer family and are a five minute walk to the most beautiful beach.

stargirl1701 · 24/03/2023 09:12

St Andrew's.

Imicola · 24/03/2023 09:18

St Andrews, definitely - there are two expansive, beautiful sandy beaches right there!

CurlewKate · 24/03/2023 09:23

St Andrews. Lots going for it, including spectacular beaches.

Thethingswedoforlove · 24/03/2023 09:28

Exeter is a very short train ride from exmouth. I spent many happy hours as a student at Exeter on that sandy beach!

CurlewKate · 24/03/2023 09:31

Kent is a bus/train ride away from several beaches

Soakitup37 · 24/03/2023 09:31

sunshinesupermum · 24/03/2023 09:36
