University near(ish) a beach

We don't live anywhere near a beach and so DC would love to have reasonably easy access to one at uni. Somewhere you can walk to or take public transport to on a weekend day say, if you wake up and feel like it ( as opposed to needing to plan in advance and get up at 5am). Or even closer would be amazing.
They are looking at doing a traditional academic subject, so Bournemouth for example, although it looks fab, would probably not be the best choice. Beach proximity cannot be the first filter!

Sussex University. Brighton.

Newcastle. I used to love going to Tynemouth when I was a student. An advantage is that you can get on the Metro at a local stop, depending on where you live, not just at the main station.

A longer train (an hour) but UEA in Norwich for Cromer, Sheringham, Great Yarmouth.

Aberystwyth you can get student accommodation right on sea-front

Happyhippy99 · 24/03/2023 07:07

Liverpool. A top university and beautiful beaches of Formby and West Kirby easily reached by train.

FannythePinkFlamingo · 24/03/2023 07:07

Falmouth. Beautiful town beaches and plenty more all nearby. Plymouth or Exeter both near South Devon beaches.

littlestrawberryhat · 24/03/2023 07:14

Exeter shares a campus with Falmouth so some Exeter courses (think there was law, English lit, journalism, mining engineering) were down in Falmouth. I went and loved it!

When I was at Lancaster, all the second years lived off campus in Morecambe.

All the Welsh Universities are near beaches.

Except Lampeter! That’s very land locked

Sunderland

Aberystwyth

ProggyMat · 24/03/2023 07:35

Durham- 12 minutes on train to Newcastle and then as previously mentioned a short hop on the metro to the coast.

LostInTheColonies · 24/03/2023 07:36

Aberystwyth! Beaches, and a bonus castle next to the sea as well. And quite a bit of student accommodation on the seafront...

Another for Swansea. One right by the uni, and several really amazing ones nearby on the Gower.

ScrumpyTree · 24/03/2023 07:41

Aberystwyth

Aberdeen and north of there has some stunning beaches.

A few wild swimming clubs; sauna near the main beach. Lots of wind surfing and water sport options in the bay.

2 Universities, Aberdeen and RGU. It is just quite cold …

Liverpool

Bangor. Easy to pop over to Anglesey for a huge choice of beaches.

DD studied a humanity at Exeter Penryn (ie Falmouth). Cannot recommend it more highly. Eminent lecturers (as they want to live in Cornwall), smaller class sizes, shared campus with the Falmouth Uni so heaps of art based societies. Beers and BBQs on the beautiful beaches (esp useful when we had the Outside Rule of Six"!). DD swam all year round and spent many happy hours wandering the coast path.

Needmoresleep · 24/03/2023 07:51

Agree about Exeter Penryn. A friend of DDs studied a maths type subject there, but hung around with arty drama types from Falmouth and did a lot of AmDram. The countryside is stunning.

Southampton is worth a thought. Very easy access to the New Forest, Purbecks, IOW etc, as well as Bournemouth and other beaches. A younger friend went there a few years back and considered Bournemouth as her local beach.

I hear from a friend who was employed at Penryn that because it was largely funded by EU money, it’s been hugely scaled back — I know the two MAs she ran there are no longer running, though I think one still exists at Exeter’s main campus.

Swansea

geminiflanagan · 24/03/2023 08:01

Aberystwyth or either of the ones in Plymouth

LongLostNailVarnish · 24/03/2023 08:04

Hull

lots of buses and train going to different coastal towns.

OttilieKnackered · 24/03/2023 08:08

Probably not the right uni but the closest parts of Portsmouth’s campus are a ten min walk to the beach and the furthest probably 25 mins. You definitely don’t need to get a train to them!
