University near(ish) a beach

We don't live anywhere near a beach and so DC would love to have reasonably easy access to one at uni. Somewhere you can walk to or take public transport to on a weekend day say, if you wake up and feel like it ( as opposed to needing to plan in advance and get up at 5am). Or even closer would be amazing.
They are looking at doing a traditional academic subject, so Bournemouth for example, although it looks fab, would probably not be the best choice. Beach proximity cannot be the first filter!

UCLan Preston, short bus ride or train ride to Lytham/Blackpool, also easy access to Southport/Formby etc

Liverpool and Manchester also have good transport networks to get about.

SmartHome · 24/03/2023 11:10

Lancaster is high up in the league tables for most subjects and is near Morecambe apparently.

RampantIvy · 24/03/2023 11:40

There is no "apparently" Grin. It is near Morecambe.

Salisburyhill · 24/03/2023 15:39

Thank you for the suggestions. Someone said an hour was too far, actually it isn't, given that it's so much closer than we are normally. I fear that all the lovely north of England and Scotland Universities will be further than they want to go.

If he went to a London Uni Brighton is 58 mins from Victoria.

Lovelyveg80 · 24/03/2023 16:02

Cold beaches also welcome!

For at least 10 months of the year… I very much doubt your dd will be drawn on a cold windy beach.

Go with degree choice first and foremost in terms of what really appeals to her and interests her on the course profile and then consider the beach

Anoooshka · 24/03/2023 16:03

Kent?

Salisburyhill · 24/03/2023 16:07

Well they do like a cold windy beach in fact. I appreciate they may not like it quite so much if they could access one every day, but then again, they might.
I'm not sure quite how dim you must think we are if you feel the need to counsel choosing by course content first. I did say in the OP beach proximity is not the first filter, but it would be nice to have.

Another vote for St Andrews.

Might not be as warm as some, but the beaches are great, and an easy walk (as is everything else!)

BlueHeelers · 24/03/2023 16:15

Exeter
St Andrews
Durham
Aberystwyth
Lancaster (please not UClan …)

slug · 24/03/2023 16:21

Definitely St Andrews. DD even went winter swimming in the sea when she was there

TerribleMouse · 24/03/2023 16:25

Exeter - either main campus or their Cornwall campus both have easy access to beaches. There is also an open water swimming society if that’s if interest! And another society which do lots of coastal walks on the weekends. But Exmouth is an easy (and very pretty) train ride away.

Colliemayhem · 24/03/2023 16:40

Southampton - great University and about 30 minutes on the train from Bournemouth.

There is no "apparently" Grin. It is near Morecambe.

There's an off road cycle track between lancaster and morecambe, though I'm not sure how it connects to the uni.
Morecambe may not be the nicest of beaches, but it's got great views round the bay on a clear day and in winter you may see rafts of eider ducks near the shore which has to be a vote winner for anyone sensible.Grin
Train from Lancaster gets you to silverdale and Arnside, again not great beaches but brilliant if you like watching the sea and the tide surging in.

HappySonHappyMum · 24/03/2023 16:50

Chichester - Beach is five minutes walk from the Bognor Regis campus and it's beautiful!

PopGoesTheProsecco · 24/03/2023 17:11

You don't say what DC wants to study but Canterbury is close to Whitstable and Herne Bay and fairly close to Margate and Ramsgate (and has regular public transport to all). Canterbury has three very different universities (Kent, Canterbury Christ Church and the University of the Creative Arts) and also a medical school so has a wide range of traditional and non-traditional degree programmes.

Thisismyusernamefornow · 24/03/2023 18:29

Bournemouth.

bguthb90 · 24/03/2023 18:47

For those who think Durham is near a beach, it's not really. The closest one is 15 miles away (Seaham) so is a good car drive or 2 buses away

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/03/2023 18:49

As pp, Swansea is virtually on the beach. I think proximity to a beach is plenty good enough reason to apply to a Uni. Proximity to mountains was my main criterion.

I didn't get the A levels for Swansea in the end (close to both mountains and beach!) but did many years post grad at Newcastle, and did that 30 min metro journey to the beaches at Tynemouth, Cullercoats and Whitley Bay many times.

The suggestion was that 12-15 mins train to Newcastle then metro to Tynemouth/Whitley Bay was close enough! But I think that OP is now looking more at places further south.

Thisismyusernamefornow · 24/03/2023 18:55

Bangor!

HealthyFats · 24/03/2023 18:58

Sussex- 20 minute cycle to the beach and a very good uni.
