Has anyone else received a reading list from their college? DD got hers today, a busy few weeks ahead! They called it essential reading that she’ll be examined on in week 0. All starting to feel very real now…

Yes my DD got a reading list for HSPS a week or so ago although not sure if any mention of being examined. IB results this week and already very stressed so getting that hasn't helped. At least she will know this week. So much time until A level results.

Hertsessex · 06/07/2023 00:24

Best of luck to anybody whose DC has an offer and getting IB results tomorrow afternoon. Going to be a long morning.

Pickle1216 · 06/07/2023 07:14

Good luck to your DD today @Hertsessex

Just on the reading - they don't need to read it all. Just choose a few books that interest them. Usually it's a suggested list, rather than anything that's going to be examined. They can look at the first year modules, think about the essays they may be writing and choose a few texts that seem relevant.

Not sure if English is different than others but they were pretty clear on a core list of essential reading and then a further recommended list. Fair really as the 8 week term won’t be enough for her to get through all the reading!

Good luck to your DD today @Hertsessex

DD made her IB offer so woohoo here. Lots at her school missed offers at various places some by a considerable margin so very relieved.

PettsWoodParadise · 10/07/2023 06:42

Congratulations to your DD @Hertsessex grest to hear.

Panicmode1 · 10/07/2023 12:53

Oooh thank you for info on that thread and yes fingers crossed for lots of success as A level results come in.

Pickle1216 · 10/07/2023 16:47

@Hertsessex congratulations to your DD! Such a relief I am sure.

i have read that there was a lot of disappointment generally with IB this year?

ZeroIsFine · 10/07/2023 20:32

Relative is an international student applying for Cambridge. She got her IB results, passed the overall required score, but missed one submodule (6 instead of 7). Is there any chance still?

Yes there is a chance but probably depends which subject. 776 offer and got 766? Also depends how close to a 7. Also how everyone else does. Presumably College has told her to submit details for them to assess. Heard of lots missing grades and missing place but some being ok.

Wants to study economy, missed mark is English, pretty narrowly.
Yes, she submitted the details, their answer suggests it might be a longer wait, which is tricky, as her second choice is in different country with different timelines.

They are probably waiting for A level results of the others. That is difficult to judge and a tricky situation to be in. At least they haven’t said a flat no although perhaps that would be easier

Certainly was at my DDs school with some very odd/low grades flying around. My wife teaches IB and some of the grades were disappointing compared to previous years. Lots of remarks for sure.

Just over a week to the a level results
how is it going ?

Calm before the storm…..

PettsWoodParadise · 09/08/2023 21:34

Trying to act normal. DD got an email yesterday from her (hopeful) college about what to expect. She read extracts out to me but nothing other than ‘don’t call us on results day’ and ‘email us if you have a near miss’ seemed to stick in my head.

I am going out to the cinema on Wednesday after work next week, I think by then I will need an even bigger distraction and not have the remotest temptation to talk about ‘what ifs’ with DD.

Aurea · 09/08/2023 21:42

Thought I'd give a mini post results update:

My son applied and was rejected from Cambridge comp sci after interview last year.

He has since received an unconditional offer for the integrated masters at Edinburgh Uni and has just received his Scottish exam results.

Although he took Scottish exams, his results are equivalent to four A stars at A level and he also had another A star early from last year.

He's very excited about his future at Edinburgh so all is good. 😊

I hope all your DCs find happiness and success, be it at Oxbridge or elsewhere.

Theworried2 · 09/08/2023 21:54

If DS meets his offer, will his college have updated it on UCAS at 8am on results day so he can check before collecting results. Or does it update later.

Malbecfan · 09/08/2023 21:58

@Theworried2 it's several years ago now, but in 2017, DD knew just after 7.30 that she had made her Cambridge offer. We didn't get to school until after 9.30 for the actual results. It made for a much less stressful journey.

@Aurea that's lovely news. I hope your DS has a fantastic time.

Theworried2 · 09/08/2023 22:04

@Malbecfan thanks. Hopefully this is still the case.

Karwomannghia · 09/08/2023 23:00

Ds reckons he’ll know the day before if he’s got in as he’ll get an email from Cambridge?? But he’s also in the position of if he hasn’t made the grades they emailed a few months ago to say send us your results and we may still accept you even if you didn’t get the entry grades. So quite a lot of uncertainty.

PacificState · 10/08/2023 07:36

This time next week <screams into pillow>

Entering eggshell territory here. Although I did take up the suggestion on here of buying DS2 a college hoodie with his initials on it. He's taken to saying 'you've got no faith!' whenever I mention his insurance uni, so if he gets what he needs it will be very satisfying to hand the hoodie over. And if he doesn't, I'll have a weird white elephant for the attic and nobody need ever know...

Nyaaaaargh

purplepatty · 10/08/2023 08:42

Been silently following, but just wondered if anyone had any tips?

DC got pooled by Cambridge, and was offered a college that they are really not keen on, and is now having a wobble. Their insurance choice allocated them their first choice college, so they are seriously wondering about asking to switch if they get the grades. Anyone got any advice?
