@petitebleu - so sorry to hear about your DS. I hope that some time out over Christmas may help to give him some space and time to think about his next steps.

So much progress even if not in expected ways.

Ds is home in the new house i moved to last Monday. He seems a bit older but not such a jump as there was at Easter. He's got a job starting in a couple of weeks. I drove past his house for next year before picking him up, which was maybe a mistake as it compresses the mental picture of his time at C even more.

Generally feeling exhausted. I've changed job, house and got ds in the past month. Too many boxes in the house.

ofteninaspin · 25/06/2023 06:52

I hope you settle into your new job and home quickly @Panicmode1. That is a lot of change. Enjoy having your lad home for the summer.
@Juja your DS sounds very mature and organised and I am glad second year has gone well for him.

Panicmode1 · 25/06/2023 07:36

Thank you for the good wishes @ofteninaspin but I shall forward them on to @PermanentTemporary !

Really well done to all of the graduates, especially those who have had additional challenges.

D1 (Oxford) had an email from the History faculty re: marking. The exam board meets in early July. There are four categories: 1 - all marks are in and degree will be classified as usual, 2 - most marks are in and provisional classification will be given, this may change when all the marks are in but this can only improve class 3 - enough evidence to graduate, no classification until all marks are in, 4 - not enough marks in to graduate.
If you fall into category 1 you will just be informed when your final results are available. (Last year this was July 12th) if in categories 2 -4 you will be informed of this and given any available marks after the exam board has met.

ofteninaspin · 25/06/2023 08:09

Apologies and thank you @Panicmode1!

Panicmode1 · 25/06/2023 08:13

No problem at all @ofteninaspin ...I was wondering whether I had drunk far more than I thought last night and made up a whole new Mumsnet post!!

Certainly hope that almost all History undergrads fall into 1. and 2. JulesJules. Presumably this is purely to do with the luck of the draw on which papers the undergrad chose/ which tutors are marking?

JulesJules · 25/06/2023 11:19

D1 not unduly concerned (for once!) @goodbyestranger - she's got the impression that papers will have been marked (several times) in time for the exam boards.

goodbyestranger · 25/06/2023 11:25

Oh I see - I read that wrong. I thought it meant that depending on options students could be in different categories. Which makes no sense on reflection :)

Sounds positive.

JulesJules · 25/06/2023 12:52

Oh I think I agree with you, goodbye - and the History joint degrees are run through the History Dept, so dependent on different subjects as well as different options. I don't know why D1 is not particularly worried, I think she is still very happy and relieved that exams are over.

SchrodingersKitty · 25/06/2023 14:48

My DS is a joint History student too. I'm much more concerned than he is about results. He came home yesterday and is straight into planning re-writes to the novel series he's been working on for years. Lovely to see him - I'd forgotten how intense he is!

mutterphore · 25/06/2023 17:56

@Catsrcool69 there's been no communication at all from the English Faculty about DS1's (C) unmarked finals. So so sad for him but pleased he doesn't seem bothered.

What does a mum wear to a 'fake' graduation ceremony?? It feels wrong to be dressing up and potentially having photos etc, when DS1 isn't actually getting his degree or graduating. I think it feels almost worst of all that most of the college cohort will be graduating properly and hidden inside the group, a faction who will be walking up in Senate House to receive a blank piece of paper.

I wonder if any supervisors will be around at the college-based graduation event and if it would be awful of me to try and ask about the marking strikes and if there's any progress with the English Faculty? I don't want to ruin the day for anyone of course and I probably shouldn't get involved but it's very hard to act as if your son is graduating when he's only able to do a fake version of the event.

@JulesJules , at least Oxford are actively communicating with students and DS2 (O) History feels confident that all will be well by the time of his graduation later in the summer.

DS2 has progressed to the next stage for another of his career applications, which is good. I think he's currently waiting to hear back from about 5 places, although he doesn't tell me much. DS1 is actually still completing further applications even today but no positive outcomes for him so far, although he has progressed with one or two I think. Meanwhile, he's got lots on this coming week with his choir, as a choral scholar and sang at some alumnae college events and at a cathedral. His choir is rehearsing to make a recording this week.

Ironoaks · 25/06/2023 18:42

@mutterphore good luck to them both in their applications

Malbecfan · 25/06/2023 18:43

@mutterphore at least you should get to Senate House. We didn't manage that. Apparently next year DD is eligible for her MA as it will be 6 years in October since she matriculated. However, hopefully the PhD might come a year later (crossing fingers etc.) It was lovely to have her home, even if it was only for 28 hours. She managed 2 sea swims!

Ironoaks · 25/06/2023 23:05

@Malbecfan DS's plans for next term include applying for a PhD, especially if he enjoys the summer research placement. Nobody in our family is in academia, so I'm hoping the process isn't too mysterious.

goodbyestranger · 25/06/2023 23:53

It doesn't seem to be in the least mysterious Ironoaks.

goodbyestranger · 25/06/2023 23:57

Congrats on those swims DD1! I've only done one this year - enormous jellyfish are my current excuse. I used to swim straight out for miles in Devon before I had the DC (well, possibly half a mile in reality) but I've become much more timid.

ofteninaspin · 26/06/2023 07:21

With you on the jellyfish @goodbyestranger. Thwarted my ambitions in Cornwall last summer.

@mutterphore, I’m wearing the same dress for Senate House that I wore at DD’s Oxford graduation last Summer regardless of the marking outcome. Really looking forward to seeing DS at the end of this week.

HewasH20 · 26/06/2023 07:35

@ofteninaspin Cambridge thumped my DD's tennis team yesterday, but I'm so pleased that she finally got the chance to play. She will simply have to settle for winningvreal tennis varsity instead.

DD's graduation will be later in the year, but I can't imagine it having any the less pomp & ceremony even if her results aren't finalised. Nobody knows whether you got a 1st or a 3rd regardless. It will be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the 3 years she had living her dream with all its ups & downs.

ofteninaspin · 26/06/2023 09:02

Congratulations on the real tennis win for your DD @HewasH20. That’s fantastic.

DS is now back in Cambridge after a brilliant weekend of tennis/Varsity dinner.

Completely agree that graduation will be a celebration of everything achieved and overcome over the last three years.

goodbyestranger · 26/06/2023 09:15

The graduations in the Sheldonian really are fabulous. I've had eight so far with hopefully two more to come. All really wonderful happy days. I'm not optimistic that DS3 will ever sign up for a belated Cambridge graduation for his MPhil, I think that he's moved on - no point pushing it.

DD4 is still in Oxford. Came home at 6am from a ball on Sunday morning and staying to do the Open Days with a number of friends.

ofteninaspin · 26/06/2023 12:48

DS has results and a ranking!! So delighted and excited for him. Can’t wait for Thursday evening when DH and I will be meeting up for dinner with DD, DS and his girlfriend to start the celebrations.

Scoobyblue · 26/06/2023 13:53

Hurray - well done @ofteninaspin ds. And hope that you enjoy Thursday evening.

goodbyestranger · 26/06/2023 14:22

Sounds great ofteninaspin - very well done to your DS!

Ironoaks · 26/06/2023 14:26

@ofteninaspin that's wonderful news!
