Hi all,

I don't think there is a Medicine 2023 Entry thread yet, so it might be an idea to get one started.

Anyone out there with DC applying or reapplying for Medicine 2023, please join a friendly thread for mutual support and useful advice from those who understand the UK Medical School application process.

@craftycatsinhats with that score he could probably get an interview for most schools however UEA is one to look at. SJT is considered as part of the interview and offers are based 50% on interview and 50% ucat. It seems like a friendly and supportive course as well.

opoponax · 21/09/2022 07:32

Hi there @craftycatsinhats. UEA is worth looking at with a strong UCAT and interview concerns as the overall post-interview score is 50% interview and 50% UCAT. Your DS would also score full marks on the SJT MMI station with a band 1, which would also help compensate for the impact of any interview nerves on any other station. If your DS feels he would be more at ease either face to face or online, it could be worth looking at which med schools are looking at doing what - there is some info on that a little upthread.

Great minds think alike!

@craftycatsinhats the ones which use non-interview stats post interview are:

Edinburgh - uses pre-interview score as 50% of post interview score, but as non-contextual RUK applicants need 100% to get an interview, that may not be a huge differentiator. However, they have a very high offer to interview rate for non-contextual RUK.

Aberdeen - also use pre-interview score for 50% of post interview. There may still be a bonus 5 points for achieved grades.

As others have said, UEA, UCAT is 50% of post interview score. He also gets full marks for the SJT virtual station.

There are several where the SJT is a virtual station (Sheffield, St Andrews, UEA, Birmingham, may be others).

Is he applying for any BMAT ones? Every year there are some very academically bright applicants (usually boys) who get 3 rejections and an offer from Cambridge as they are looking for different things, academic rather than soft skills.

For DS1 we also looked into a safety net plan of Republic of Ireland, where it is all done on grades and entrance exam, no interview. Sadly it was not an option for DS as he did not have a GCSE in a language.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 21/09/2022 09:29

@Monkey2001 do you know what the fee / loan situation is for Ireland if a UK resident with no EU passport?

Hi all

I'd be really grateful for a little advice for DS applying for medicine. His UCAT result is over 3000 with Band 1 for SJ, he has all A* at A Level (applying with grades in hand) and 9's/8's at GCSE. He's not a superconfident individual compared to many of his peers but has spent a gap year in a public facing job to develop more confidence before applying.

Research seems to indicate that he's likely to get offered interviews based on UCAT score/academic record but that he needs to be strategic in his application choices to maximise how much those count towards interview scoring and hence the chance of converting an interview into an offer.

Any particular suggestions ? Thanks.

Hi, I’m a novice at this but noticed a few people have suggested UEA. We went to visit a couple of weeks ago and I thought it had a lovely friendly feel. Also think a campus uni would suit my DD and perhaps might be appealing to your DS too? He has great scores/grades so am sure will be snapped up!

justjuggling · 21/09/2022 09:36

Monkey2001 · 21/09/2022 00:05

@justjuggling they will get answers, but they may come very late (looking at you Kings College London!)

Sounds like the next stage is going to require nerves of steel!

beneathhereyes · 21/09/2022 10:22

Can I ask the seasoned experts please, is the preliminary UCAT average for 2022 lower or higher than 2021?

Scoobyblue · 21/09/2022 10:32

Interim mean in 2021 was 2570, 2022 is 2554.

beneathhereyes · 21/09/2022 10:53

Thank you @Scoobyblue@Scoobyblue

Just spoke to KCL to clarify a few details regarding interviews (dentistry), the worst waste of 30 minutes of my life - the guy just told me you can't speak to admissions team until after you submit your application. Is that true? I wanted to know what their UCAT cut off was for last year and also if interviews will be F2f or online.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 21/09/2022 11:03

The more I read about KCL the more I think they don't actually want any students. Try reading the threads in the student room where there might be some info if you can get past the irate previous applicants.

opoponax · 21/09/2022 11:35

I've just set up a follow on thread as we are getting close to the end of this one. Medicine 2023 Entry - Part 2.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Has the madness of excess numbers admitted due to the CAG farce in pandemic years calmed down now, or is it anticipated to still have an effect on numbers of offers likely to be made this year ?

Monkey2001 · 21/09/2022 13:41

@craftycatsinhats I think it depends on whether DoE sticks with 2019 grade stats for this lot. I think it will still be a tough year as there are a lot of people with achieved grades re-applying, but it won't be as bad as last year.

I don't know whether crafty's DS applied last year, but @justjuggling great grades do not get you snapped up in Medicine. Once you get to interview, for most the grades and UCAT are no longer relevant. A lot of super bright people don't get offers, it is a brutal game,

opoponax · 21/09/2022 13:44

Yes it's a bit like a macabre game of snakes and ladders!

I stand corrected @Monkey2001 Brutal sounds an apt description.

Monkey2001 · 21/09/2022 14:22

@justjuggling sorry, that sounded a bit like an attack! We all know people who say "your DC is so clever, they are bound to get offers" but, sadly, it is just not true. Someone I met at a dinner party who interviewed for Bristol said that 20% of applicants are really outstanding, obvious offers; 20% are really weak, and get quick rejections; 60% are good candidates, would make good doctors, but nothing to choose between them, so it is fairly random but they can't all get offers. Interestingly he said that boys dominate the top and bottom groups and girls dominate the middle group.

Monkey2001 · 21/09/2022 15:07

2023 Interview Plans
Birmingham 1300 interviews, 850 offers, F2F, MMI
Bristol 40% offer ratio?, on line, panel
Cambridge 25% offer ratio, on line, panel
Exeter 800 interviews, 400 offers, on line, MMI
Leicester 1100 interviews (1000 Home), 850 offers, on line, MMI
Manchester 1500 interviews, 900+ offers, choose on line or F2F, MMI
Newcastle 1100 interviews, F2F, MMI
Sheffield 1000 interviews (850 Home), F2F, MMI
UEA 600 interviews, offers depend on acceptances, F2F, MMI

Any more data for this list from open days you have attended?

Africa2go · 21/09/2022 20:41

Monkey, I have some of the stats for the number of interviews for last year - and most of them are similar to last year although the number of offers looks higher. Do you agree that similar numbers of interviews mean the cut offs are likely to stay the same (ignoring TAGs for a second) but the interview to offer ratios will be higher?

Africa2go · 21/09/2022 20:41

Sorry, I mean the numbers of likely interviews for 2023 aren't that much different to 2022?

Monkey2001 · 21/09/2022 23:28

@Africa2go I get the impression that most kept a fairly stable number of interviews in 2022, but reduced the number of offers. Exeter reduced interview numbers because they were more over-subscribed than most. Leicester increased interview number because they underestimated how popular their guarantee for applicants with achieved grades would be.

So yes, I think UCAT cut offs will be broadly similar to 2022 entry, but thresholds which include a GCSE scoring element will go up. Apart from Exeter whose cut offs should go down as they are interviewing more applicants.

Shabpat · 23/09/2022 07:44

Hi all,

I would love your guidance for my DDs choices for 2023 entry.
UCAT: 2810/ SJT Band 2
AAA predicted in Biology, History, Chemistry
all 9s at her GCSE
no contextual

We live in London and ideally would love to secure a place here but QUMUL is risky with her UCAS tariff of 162
i am unsure about Kings.
We are thinking of Leicestershire, Manchester, Liverpool and SGUL.
Are we ok with the above ?

Shabpat · 23/09/2022 07:48

sorry,
A star A star, A

( cannot see the asterix!)

Monkey2001 · 23/09/2022 09:27

@Shabpat hello. SGUL, Manchester and Leicester fine. I would not go for Liverpool (but she would get an interview) because they have a rubbish offer to interview ratio and she has options which are more likely to get an offer. Your name sounds Indian, if so and at a state school she would be eligible for Newcastle Partners (BBB offer).

She should be OK for Kings or ARU is not far from London. I don't know about Bart's, but feels risky without extra UCAS points.
