Hi all,

I don't think there is a Medicine 2023 Entry thread yet, so it might be an idea to get one started.

Anyone out there with DC applying or reapplying for Medicine 2023, please join a friendly thread for mutual support and useful advice from those who understand the UK Medical School application process.

2022 seems to be a bigger spread than the 2021 interim deciles, but broadly similar - 1st decile down from 2230 to 2170, 9th decile up from 2920 to 2940. Significant increase in Band 1 SJT, 16% in 2021 to 22% in 2022, which may affect Nottingham cut off and make a band 2 even riskier. The higher decile boundaries always go down for the final results.

They are estimating 36,770 test takers compared to 37,230 last year, which is good news as there will be slightly fewer applicants for more places this year (none deferred and medical schools are expecting to go back to higher offer numbers). Mainly relieved that the number has not increased by a few thousand (as it has for each of the previous 3 years).

UCATBMAT · 15/09/2022 10:51

Do you need 3 A stars for the University of Exeter? I can only find that they want 3 A's.

DC is predicted A stars but she is being cautious and looking at Unis which requires only 1 or no A stars.

In the intercalated 6th year do you get student finance for this or do you have to pay the fees independently?

Thank you

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 15/09/2022 11:02

For interview 3A* (predicted or achieved) and top decile on UCAT puts someone in the highest category for interviews at Exeter. This year they plan to interview more than last year. Actual offers they said are going to be Astar, A, A or AAA.

UCATBMAT · 15/09/2022 11:05

thanks @Unexpecteddrivinginstructor

Africa2go · 15/09/2022 11:08

@Monkey2001 @opoponax @mumsneedwine @GANFYD if there are slightly less applicants (at least not an increase) and the deciles are relatively static (at least not that much difference between interim results year on year) and potentially more places, do you think the UCAT cut offs will change? I know everyone needs a crystal ball but the decision making about which 4 to put down is tortuous! Nottingham was on the list but now questionning whether it will be very popular due to such an increase in Band 1s that it will really push the cut off up. Any ideas on Nottingham particularly? Many thanks!

Monkey2001 · 15/09/2022 11:09

@UCATBMAT see www.exeter.ac.uk/media/universityofexeter/recruitmentsites/docs/BMBS_admissions_policy_2022-23v5.pdf

You needed 100 points for an interview for 2022 entry, I think it will be a bit lower this year, but 98 would not be surprising. Without 3 A*s predicted the maximum points you can get are 93 if non-contextual. Really unfair system as some schools will predict those grades on request and others won't.

UCATBMAT · 15/09/2022 11:35

@Monkey2001 Thanks. I've downloaded it and understand the grading now. Back to the list for us! I wish BMAT was before the deadline the fact it is after seems ludicrous to me.

Monkey2001 · 15/09/2022 11:52

@Africa2go I can't respond properly today, but some will go up and some will go down. Exeter should do down because they interviewed fewer students for 2022. The ones which score GCSEs will go up because top grades were handed out like smarties by some schools! I don't know what happened to interview numbers at Nottingham, but the information should be available.

mumsneedwine · 15/09/2022 12:24

@Africa2go at work so will be brief. As Monkey says, we don't know what will happen to cut offs. However, for Notts I'd imaging that you'll need a band 1 and a UCAT of above 2700, with a better VR than the others. Most will have full marks for GCSEs this year. But I'm guessing 🤷‍♀️.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 15/09/2022 12:32

Interesting that on the Exeter 2023 document above (and their website) they say AAA but on the open day they said offers were A*AA -AAA. Hopefully they will stick with AAA for most students. I wonder if it is to add a small margin of safety net for them after the over offers in 2021.

Anyone else going to open days tomorrow? We are going to Leicester. I want to check whether the plan for 1100 interviews and 850 offers is really true. I think that would make it the best offer to interview rate out there.

opoponax · 16/09/2022 08:39

At Bristol open day last weekend they said that their interview to offer ratio was 40%.

OP posts:
Monkey2001 · 16/09/2022 09:42

@opoponax was that the ratio for 2022 (a weird year) or the plan for 2023? It is very low. I was surprised to see that Bristol is keeping interviews on line, it may be a good idea to share whether interviews will be F2F or on line when we find out as different ones may appeal to different DC.

So from current website data for 2023 entry:
Birmingham 1300 interviews, 850 offers, F2F, MMI
Leicester 1100 interviews (1000 Home), 850 offers, on line, MMI
Sheffield 1000 interviews (850 Home), have emailed to ask whether on line, MMI
Newcastle 1100 interviews, F2F, MMI
UEA - can't find anything, have emailed!

opoponax · 16/09/2022 09:50

I thought it sounded low too. When DS got an offer 2 years ago it was said to be around 50%. The way it was phrased at the talk last weekend was "If you get an interview, you have a 40% chance of getting an offer", suggesting coming year.

OP posts:
opoponax · 16/09/2022 09:55

Bristol also said online interviews.

OP posts:
Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 16/09/2022 10:06

Sheffield and UEA both said in the summer they were aiming for f2f interviews this year.

opoponax · 16/09/2022 10:14

I have mixed feelings about F2F. A better opportunity to come over as yourself and establish rapport but takes quite a lot of time out, if significant distances involved, at a critical stage in their A Levels.

2023 Interview Plans
Birmingham 1300 interviews, 850 offers, F2F, MMI
Bristol 40% offer ratio?, on line, panel
Cambridge 25% offer ratio, on line, panel
Leicester 1100 interviews (1000 Home), 850 offers, on line, MMI
Newcastle 1100 interviews, F2F, MMI
Sheffield 1000 interviews (850 Home), have emailed to ask whether on line, MMI
UEA 600 interviews, offers depend on acceptances, F2F, MMI

If people share other data from open days we can build up a list.

And the costs can really rack up - trains plus overnight stay can be well over £100.

TODAYISTHEDAYICLEAN · 16/09/2022 11:16

Is Keele's ratio 18%? I've just read that figure online. Seems very low.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 16/09/2022 12:04

Exeter said they will iterview 800 with 400 offers, online, MMI.

Monkey2001 · 16/09/2022 12:45

That could be the offer to application rate rather than offer to interview. The MSC figures are:

18 applicants per place
4 applicants per interview
So 4.5 interviews per place an they probably have at least twice as many offers as places, so should be 50%+

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 16/09/2022 13:40

@Monkey2001 - Many medical schools were making numbers of offers for 2022 entry that were well below 2x the number of places (some were 1x the number of places, many around 1¼-1½x). We don't know yet what the picture will be like for 2023 but I'd be surprised if there is a very big increase from 2022. It's risky for one school to increase its number of offers if all the others don't do the same thing.

Yes, I saw that the universities were being very cautious for 2022 entry, interesting that you think it will be the same for 2023. Do you think that medical schools don't believe that results will be back down to 2019 levels? We don't have the same issue with deferred places for 2023. If they remain cautious with offers and results really are like 2019 there is going to be a real whirlwind of offers on results day!
