Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

One lovely lad we saw and chatted to had a suit with a shirt covered in coffee - he’d been bumped into at a station :/

Oh bless him. At least DS' interview is virtual so wardrobe malfunctions should be minimised.

As a med student there’s a lot more socialising than she anticipated. Her favourite thing is scouring eBay for worn once Lipsy dresses (they suit her body shape and the fit is reliable) - can often pick up a stunning dress for about £5 including postage!

It's great when you know what works for you isn't it? Glad she's enjoying the socialising Smile

The TSR people are probably basing that on what happened last year. Fingers crossed for the Bristol people. We are not expecting to hear from Manchester or Newcastle until early December because that was what they did last year.

Sad to see so many on TSR getting rejections in spite of good stats because they chose poorly.

Just popping in too. Also vested interest in Bristol. Judging by Sheffield Ucat rise on cut off from last year assuming same will apply to Bristol? Fully expecting 2900 ish will be the cut off this year so DC may just make the cut off for interviews. Are all interviews sent out at the same time at Bristol?

Cirque · 18/11/2021 09:36

This is Opoponax. In Edinburgh this week and can’t access account so using an old one. Yes Bristol speculation probably just because it was this date last year that first batch of interview invites came out. The invites were drip fed in small batches every few days last year and first batch cut of was UCAT 3120 and from memory the next batch was a few days later and cut off was around 3050. Then some more issued, then some candidates put on hold who had UCATs in the 2800s who did get interview invites a bit later. The point of posting this is just to reassure your DC not to worry if they hear of others getting interviews before them or even go on hold. It’s just Bristol’s process. It was the same with offers last year. Good luck to all.

Monkey2001 · 18/11/2021 11:04

@Delime Bristol and Newcastle could go up or down depending on whether people with UCAT score of 2800-2850 are scared off by last year's cut off. We were expecting Sheffield to go up along with Southampton as people around 2800 look for somewhere safer.

DS just heard from Queens Belfast today, offered interview - virtual MMI, 7 stations including 2 of role play.

This is for someone whose worst days at primary school every year was world book day, or the school play.

Any tips anyone? The book… a drama coach? 😜

KingscoteStaff · 18/11/2021 13:18

well done to your DS @sydenhamhiller!

Is role play better on Zoom, or worse?

Monkey2001 · 18/11/2021 13:21

Well done on the QUB interview. Role play is not drama - DS1 loved drama, had main roles in school plays from the age of 11, but didn't like role play. It is tricky to practice at home, but less weird with a stranger. You are not supposed to act, you are supposed to r respond as you would in real life. Loads of stuff on YouTube. Also in "the book", for example breaking bad news.

Sydenhamhiller - DD hated role play and is in first year at Queens..... I'm guessing they are the most feared stations!

I’m not sure if this link will work but there is some good info about the role play station on the Medic Portal.

They advertise their courses - I’m not sure if anyone is planning to do an interview course? But their free question bank and information is really good according to DD.

That’s very helpful: DH and I have just been arguing about whether these courses might be helpful or not.
SandyBayley · 18/11/2021 14:05

DD is doing a Medic Portal course at the weekend. It's virtual but I guess a lot of interviews will be. She just needs to get an interview somewhere now...

KingscoteStaff · 18/11/2021 14:51

First tranche of Bristol out...

SandyBayley · 18/11/2021 15:07

What's your source @KingscoteStaff ? DD's UCAT will hopefully just make it but I fear she'll be a later tranche...

PanicBuyingSprouts · 18/11/2021 16:47

It really is isn't it. DS has got a second interview, this time at Anglia Ruskin.

If it wasn't for the very wise and dedicated MNers on here who have helped us through the application process, I'm sure that he wouldn't have got any interview at all.

Thank you all Thanks

Monkey2001 · 18/11/2021 16:52

@PanicBuyingSprouts congratulations on UEA, good luck to your DS. UEA and Sheffield have both always been really popular on Mumsnet.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 18/11/2021 17:05

That's great news @PanicBuyingSprouts...Congrats to your DS. Anglia Ruskin looks fab and IN PERSON interviews too!

No one has heard from Bristol at DD's school. At least 3 were hoping to be in the first tranche based on last year's cut offs.

Monkey2001 · 18/11/2021 17:40

Sorry @PanicBuyingSprouts - muddling up my ARU and UEA!

OP posts:
Cirque · 18/11/2021 18:15

Could it be that Bristol are sending out WP invites first @MidLifeCrisis007? Your Dd should surely be in first tranche of non-WP going by last year’s boundaries.

KingscoteStaff · 18/11/2021 19:35

The one Bristol interview we clocked is both WP AND grades in hand...

The wait continues.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 18/11/2021 19:57

Thank you Smile

It's a bit odd because on TSR there are people with slightly better UCAT scores who haven't been offered interviews yet for ARU.

Cirque · 18/11/2021 21:19

@PanicBuyingSprouts I remember on last year’s thread the same thing happened with Liverpool with people scoring a bit lower getting earlier invitations than others. Congratulations!

Monkey2001 · 18/11/2021 21:48

Yes, it is normal for invitations to go out in a fairly random order, I remember DS1 getting invitations to Sheffield and Newcastle before a friend with better stats.

SandyBayley · 20/11/2021 11:58

Looks like Newcastle invites are starting next week according TSR. A student emailed them and asked! Must not lurk on TSR, not good for my stress levels.

ARU give additional points for living in or attending schools in the East of England. Could that be why?
