Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

Congrats to those with interviews! Just saw the sheffield cut off has come out 2780 so hopefully there will be a few more interviews to celebrate soon.

KingscoteStaff · 16/11/2021 13:12

@speedyhedgehog Where's that from?

The ever-transparent Sheffield have released it on their website

speedyhedgehog · 16/11/2021 13:25

Yes on the website. Saw it on tsr first and went to check the website to make sure. Its definitely there. Excited as its one ds applied to.

Grunty79 · 16/11/2021 13:30

@Monkey2001@LaLaFlottes thank you so much. It was really helpful to know what to wear during interviews .I hope everyone gets some good news regarding interviews soon as it all suddenly feels very real and a bit scary 😃!!

PanicBuyingSprouts · 16/11/2021 18:38

DS has just got his interview for Sheffield, was cutting it a bit fine though with a score of 2800!

Now, what's that book we need on prepping for interview?

LaLaFlottes · 16/11/2021 18:58

@PanicBuyingSprouts Congratulations to your DS!

The book is the ISC Medical one - Medical School Interviews. DD used it last year and found it very useful!

The Medic Portal have a free bank of questions too which are good.

Monkey2001 · 16/11/2021 19:05

A Sheffield interview here too. Smile It's less than half an hour online with a panel rather than MMI stations.

DS is quite flummoxed by already being sent the questions - almost too much time to prepare. He's a more natural wing it by the seat of the pants last minute type person.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 16/11/2021 21:24

Thanks you LaLa and Monkey, the book is ordered.

DS is very much like that too Haff. Hope he does well Thanks

Haffdonga · 16/11/2021 21:33

And your ds too @PanicBuyingSprouts, plus everyone else's dc here Flowers

The "how to dress" is difficult. DD has found that a lot of emphasis is placed, when in clinical settings, on appropriate dress, so it is something interviewers will be aware of. . It is a real pandemic silver lining that in hospitals they now just wear scrubs.

Many courses have GP placements from the first term, so suitable clothes can be worn again. It was difficult to find something that was both professional suitable for a 17 year old. In the end, and after a long traipse along Kings Road, we threw ourselves at the mercy of a helpful shop assistant who took on the challenge and brought out clothes for DD to try on. The end result. Some nice, well cut, black trousers, a good belt, and an attractive, stylish blouse, coupled with a Zara jacket she had already. Clothes she wore, rather than wore her.

goodbyestranger · 16/11/2021 21:47

Yes Needmoresleep, scrubs on the basis that they are more hygienic somehow. So a junior doctor taking scrubs to wash at home means that s/he is cleaner in those than in their own work appropriate kit of yesteryear which they also wash at home. Makes huge sense.

Needmoresleep · 16/11/2021 22:27

Hygiene?! Ironing a week's worth of clothes in advance was a step too far in terms of DDs organisational skills, and that panic iron first thing in the morning before leaving the flat and whilst eating her breakfast did not do much for her digestion. Ergo, scrubs are a huge improvement. Plus useful for medic bar crawls.

sergeantmajormum · 17/11/2021 07:01

Scrubs also worn on GP placement in Liverpool now.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 17/11/2021 08:08

DS has to wear business attire for 6th form so luckily don't have to fret about what he should wear.

These sort of things are so much easier for boys anyway aren't they?

DS wore a T shirt and his pyjama bottoms for his Oxbridge history interview last year.

He's really enjoying his time at Durham......................Grin

That's made me smile so much. Really glad that he's enjoying Durham too Smile

goodbyestranger · 17/11/2021 22:13

Needmoresleep DS1 was with me last week and told me he has a set of black scrubs....

goodbyestranger · 17/11/2021 22:13

He seems very pleased with them :)

Needmoresleep · 17/11/2021 22:34

Perfect for Halloween?

Sorry about the thread divert. Uniqlo, which is not too expensive and which sells a good range of basic blouses and trousers, became DDs preferred option for placement clothes, which I think is all that is required for interview. All you really want is for clothes to be comfortable and not distract or, effectively, to be noticed. There was a complication in the sleeves had to be short or capable or being rolled up. Scrubs are much preferred, though probably not suitable for an interview.

KingscoteStaff · 17/11/2021 23:10

TSR saying first tranche of Bristol interview invites out tomorrow - BUT HOW COULD THEY KNOW???!!!

SandyBayley · 17/11/2021 23:24

@KingscoteStaff - now you've got me nervous. Hoping DD isn't reading TSR this late at night as she will fret! I know she reads it...

HostessTrolley · 18/11/2021 00:33

Dd wore her school clothes for interviews. They didn’t have a uniform for sixth form, it was ‘office wear’. She mainly wore plain trousers, blouse, thinnish jumper in a soft colour like light blue or apricot, and a blazer. Didn’t buy expensive clothes for sixth form, blazers were usually Next ones bought on eBay! Most of the boys seemed to be in trousers/shirt/jumper although some wore suits or blazers. One lovely lad we saw and chatted to had a suit with a shirt covered in coffee - he’d been bumped into at a station :/

As a med student there’s a lot more socialising than she anticipated. Her favourite thing is scouring eBay for worn once Lipsy dresses (they suit her body shape and the fit is reliable) - can often pick up a stunning dress for about £5 including postage!

Bristol was one of DS' choices. Now I'm fretting as well!

Not sure he reads TSR much. He seemed to have spent most of last night reading the Medical Interviews book which was kindly recommended on here Smile
