Medicine 2022 entry

Monkey2001 · 25/09/2021 17:50

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

ARU give additional points for living in or attending schools in the East of England. Could that be why?

No, we're in the NW so that can't be it.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 20/11/2021 13:15

Must not lurk on TSR, not good for my stress levels.

Is that your new Mantra Sandy? Grin

Monkey2001 · 20/11/2021 16:14

Lots of them just go through the list of invitees fairly randomly, Newcastle did in 2018.

It's probably just that then Smile

Anyone else with interviews? I understand that Plymouth are deciding their cut off this week and Sandy mentioned Newcastle starting to send theirs out this week so we might get a few more on here Smile

Off topic but @GANFYD on TSR - thank you . I am an ACP ( Nurse) 30 years experience, your appreciation of the ANP in your practice was a pleasure to read.
As HCP's we need to value each other and work together.

I am not on TSR I just lurk.

On another note DD has an interview at Sheffield. Waiting to see if she gets one in my home city of Manchester!

I just say it how I see it! Healthcare needs everybody doing their jobs to the best of their ability and as I always tell my staff, none of us are more important than the other (except the finance lady, as she knows how to pay the wages, and Susan who buys the coffee, milk and biscuits on the way in to work!). Well done to your daughter and good luck for the rest of her application

Exeter have revealed cut off - looks like 2790 and 100 points, I think that means non contextual still needed 2850 and Ax3, but contextual could get an interview with AAA. I think Exeter will struggle to fill all their places as they are only interviewing people who will get lots of interviews this year. Expecting a very high offer to interview ratio.

Expecting a very high offer to interview ratio.

Music to DD's ears....

kackle · 22/11/2021 15:03

When do we expect to hear from Newcastle and Birmingham?

Monkey2001 · 22/11/2021 18:52

Newcastle started 6/12 last year. They interviewed for A101 in Dec and then moved onto A100 in January.

DD hasn’t heard from any of her choices yet, however she’s had a conditional offer (BBB) for biomedical sciences today which has given her a real boost.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 23/11/2021 16:29

That's good Babble. Is the plan to take up the Biomedical Sciences place if she doesn't succeed with her medical entry this time?

Monkey2001 · 23/11/2021 16:52

I am sure @BabbleBee DD will get interviews, most of our DC don't have any yet. Think really carefully before accepting Biomedical Science. This will come up in the spring if any of our DC don't have medicine offers, but it is better to take a gap year and reapply as most graduates will struggle to get into medicine, even if they are able to find the £40k of fees they will need if they do an A100 course because they can get on one of the ridiculously competitive A101 courses.

Sorry, I didn't want that she wouldn't, sorry if it came across that way. You are totally right in saying that lots of Unis haven't sent out their invitations for interview yet.

BabbleBee · 23/11/2021 20:10

It’s ok @PanicBuyingSprouts I knew what you meant, and it’s fine to ask. The answer is yes, she’ll likely to take the Biochemistry place. She doesn’t want a gap year.

We’ve just had parent consultations, maths is still her weakest point and will probably get a B. Biology A* and Chemistry A. She’s got much better teachers this year and they’ve seen a leap in improvement since September.

Toofaroutallmylife · 23/11/2021 21:00

I’ve always said the hardest part of parenting is the one you’re going through.

It’s been a nightmare this week as I knew DD hadn’t made Exeter before she did. Exeter have offered her a biomed place but the thoughts above have been helpful

I’ve been so impressed by her resilience- after half an hour of tears she announced “it’s not the rejection, it’s how I deal with it that counts”

And @GANFYD I told her about your response on a TSR thread- ie you made a choice of safety versus desire based on the info you have, and you can’t beat yourself up if the crystal ball doesn’t work. So helpful, thank you

SandyBayley · 23/11/2021 21:15

Sorry to hear that @Toofaroutallmylife but that resilience is fantastic to hear about, your DD will go far.

My DD is pondering what to do about the BMAT results on Friday. I'm contemplating allowing her to skip her first period at school and run her up there for 2nd period (we are close). Selfishly that works for me as I'll find out at the same time...

Still no word from anywhere.

GANFYD · 23/11/2021 22:24

Sorry to hear about the rejection @Toofaroutallmylife. Exeter badly misjudged things last year, and that has had a knock on effect for this year's applicants. So tough, but rejection is just redirection, and sounds like your daughter has the sort of attitude that will make her a fabulous doctor one day soon! Best of luck with the rest of the application

Monkey2001 · 23/11/2021 22:48

@Toofaroutallmylife sorry to hear Exeter was a. No. Hope she gets the other interviews and, as is often said, she only needs 1 offer.

A very pleasing EPQ result has arrived here, but nothing else. 2 of DD’s school friends have been turned down by Edinburgh, which made her think that my advice (don’t touch with barge pole) might actually have been wise! When I say my advice, I do of course mean @Monkey2001, @mumsneedwine and @GANFYD’s advice…

mumsneedwine · 24/11/2021 06:33

@KingscoteStaff well done on the EPQ 😊. And v glad Edinburgh was avoided. Its lovely to hear interviews coming in, but if not heard yet then don't worry. Its v early days and it's a long, bumpy road to June.
You only need one ...

SandyBayley · 24/11/2021 06:55

@KingscoteStaff - I feel the same about Edinburgh! Very pleased that one was swerved as a friend was rejected with similar stats. Another does have an interview with 3100 ish band 1 though.

2 days to BMAT results 😮

SandyBayley · 24/11/2021 06:55

And well done on the EPQ @KingscoteStaff DD!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 24/11/2021 07:14

Congrats to your DD on the EPQ result @KingscoteStaff.

DD was upset by her Edinburgh rejection but @GANFYD had flagged the risks of applying there with a B2 (if not WP). DD liked it so much she thought it was a risk worth taking.... but it was the waste of a choice with hindsight.

Meanwhile she has a VERY big day ahead today. It's St Andrew's interview day! I shall be a complete bag of nerves until I hear how it went.

SandyBayley · 24/11/2021 07:59

Best of luck for your DD today @MidLifeCrisis007 - 🍀
