Medicine 2022 entry

Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

Congratulations to those with interviews!

notmedicmum · 13/11/2021 08:15

Yes, congratulations! Hopefully the first of many interviews for our DCs. Fingers crossed for everyone.

kackle · 14/11/2021 11:21

Anybody heard anything from Edinburgh or UEA yet please?

mumsneedwine · 14/11/2021 11:33

@kackle UEA probably this week. My student not heard from Edinburgh yet. Only have ones for Kings and Sunderland so far.
Well done to everyone with an interview, and good luck to everyone still waiting. No news is always good news 😊

Do you think that a Ucat score of 2910 B2 would be enough for UEA interview?

Widening access candidate for Edinburgh thus get a 10% Ucat uplift which takes the score up to 3200. Do you think this is high enough for an England based application?

Thanks x

LaLaFlottes · 14/11/2021 13:28

@kackle the cut off for UEA interview was 2650 or similar last year so I’m absolutely sure that will be fine. DD didn’t apply to Edinburgh but someone else will know!

Just to say re UEA interview invites, they came out randomly over a period of time, so don’t panic if there are people on TSR with invites and you’ve not heard.

Monkey2001 · 14/11/2021 18:54

2910 B2 should be fine for UEA, but for Edinburgh with a B2 all other stats need to be perfect.

Thank You. All other stats appear to be perfect. 11 A at gcse, three A predicted at A level
Monkey2001 · 14/11/2021 21:19

Fingers crossed then @kackle. It should not be as bad as last year as there are many fewer band 1s

kackle · 15/11/2021 20:12

Interviews to both Edinburgh and UEA came through today :)

SandyBayley · 15/11/2021 20:16

Lovely to see new joiners and congratulations on interviews. Would be nice to hear a bit more about your DS and DD 😊

Monkey2001 · 15/11/2021 20:33

Great news on interviews.

@kackle Edinburgh have had great offer to interview ratios for the last couple of years.

@Dagbonunion is SGUL doing the asynchronous thing again where they send you an interview to complete off line and upload?

OP posts:
Dagbonunion · 15/11/2021 20:52

DD just confirmed she has 2 hrs to record answering the questions and upload.

Monkey2001 · 16/11/2021 09:42

@SandyBayley have you looked at the Edinburgh thread on TSR? People rejected with perfect GCSEs and A levels and 3300, 3160, 3340 UCAT B2, so it was a good decision for your DD not to apply! B1 still seems to be essential for a non contextual applicant as well as perfect academics.

They must give an extra uplift to contextual applications in addition to the 10% on UCAT. @kackle I could not find anything on how they decide an RUK applicant is contextual - do you know?!

OP posts:
SandyBayley · 16/11/2021 09:45

Yes I did see that. I don't think her B1 would have been enough with 2880 UCAT. She has applied though for Immunology as her 5th!

www.ed.ac.uk/studying/undergraduate/access-edinburgh/widening-access-offers

Its detailed here. We just emailed and they said yes it applies regardless of location

MidLifeCrisis007 · 16/11/2021 12:01

DD was another to be rejected by Edinburgh. 3190 B2. A boy at her school with identical UCAT also rejected. Have also seen that an RUK with 2990 B1 rejected. She is disappointed but knows she's in good company.

However she is lucky enough to have been offered an Exeter interview.

Monkey2001 · 16/11/2021 12:06

@MidLifeCrisis007 sorry to hear about Edinburgh, but great that the Exeter interview came so quickly to cheer her up. As they are only interviewing 350 there should be a good offer-interview ratio there too.

Thank you@GANFYD for your advice regarding Edinburgh university as my daughter got an interview inviteSmile Just wondering if wearing the school uniform will be ok for the interview? What is the dress code for girls during interviews if someone could kindly guide me ?

MidLifeCrisis007 · 16/11/2021 12:14

I heard from a good source that 75% of Exeter offers are to WP applicants, so that rather reduces her chances unfortunately.

Monkey2001 · 16/11/2021 12:35

That could be because the way they shortlist gives a massive advantage to WP. Non WP have to have/be predicted AAA and a top 10% UCAT to score 100, if a WP applicant can persuade school to predict AAA they just need a UCAT over 2150 or AAA and a UCAT over 2360. A lot of schools are very flexible on predictions. If at least 75% of the people interviewed are WP, it is likely that 75% of the offers will be WP. I think there is no differentiation once they get to interview, so they are on a level playing field now.

Did they have perfect other stats? They must have been very close to cut off, so frustrating for them.

congratulations @Grunty79. The general advice is smart clothes. Is Edinburgh on line or F2F? If on line, lots will be doing it at school, so uniform would be fine. If on line and doing it from home, I would say office smart.

OP posts:
LaLaFlottes · 16/11/2021 13:00

@Grunty79 congratulations to your daughter! That's super exciting.

Last year DD chose to wear a smart blouse and black trousers for her on line interviews. Although she was only visible from the shoulders up, she wanted to be smart on her bottom half too "in case she had to stand up for any reason"! Grin

I am sure school uniform would also be very acceptable - DD was at a college without a uniform otherwise she may well have worn hers.

I'd say as long as they look smart but also feel comfortable that's the main thing. Maybe nothing too "fussy" that won't look great on screen?

Best of luck Smile
