Support thread for aspiring medics.

We want all our DCs to succeed, whatever their school type. We share knowledge to help them to achieve their goals, celebrate success and support if things don't go well.

As we press the "send and pay" buttons on UCAS, we wish all our DC the best of luck in this tough year with so much uncertainty.

I see from TSR that the first Kings interview offers are coming through. Any lucky recipients yet?

Monkey2001 · 11/11/2021 23:30

I saw the KCL offers. I think Sheffield will be out next week. Should see lots of invitations to interview in the next couple of weeks.

KCL interview here - less than two weeks' notice so DS is planning on taking his interview prep book into work and getting some prep in on his breaks!

SandyBayley · 12/11/2021 06:38

@MidLifeCrisis007 🏆

SandyBayley · 12/11/2021 06:39

Congratulations on the interview @Solarlantern - where else has your DS applied?

Monkey2001 · 12/11/2021 06:53

Exciting news @solarlantern! Don't want to pile pressure on but, as I said upthread, KCL tend to make some offers before Christmas so 🤞 for an offer in the bag soon. Is he on a gap year as you say he is going into work?

Congratulations to your DS @Solarlantern and hope the interview goes well. Here's to lots more exciting news for all your DC.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 12/11/2021 08:15

Have woken up with an awful hangover to news of my "Wise Woman of the Week" award. I'm stoked!

I think @Solarlantern and her DS need the plaudits now however! Congrats on the KCL interview.

Midlife Towers are eagerly awaiting news from Bristol, Exeter, Edinburgh and St Andrews. I have a feeling DD may hear from Bristol today.

opoponax · 12/11/2021 10:28

@MidLifeCrisis last year Exeter's cut-offs were all announced on 17th November and TSR reported some St Andrews invites on the same day . Bristol started their non-WP invites in UCAT ranked batches from 18th November. Don't know anything about Edinburgh.

opoponax · 12/11/2021 10:37

And last year's cut-off for the first batch of Bristol invites last year was 3120 (just checked my feverishly scrawled notes taken this time last year!) so unless there is any major change in threshold this year your DD should be getting some good news very soon.

LaLaFlottes · 12/11/2021 10:57

Oh my goodness exciting times for your DC and I wish everyone the very best!

Just wanted to say @MidLifeCrisis007 that DD received her interview invite for St Andrews on 19th Nov and her interview was on 26th Nov (set date). So a quick turn around! She then received her offer on 4th March - a long wait! She was RUK and applied with no preference regarding the Scottish or English route.

Best of luck to all.

opoponax · 12/11/2021 11:02

Gosh I'd forgotten about that tight timeframe for St Andrews @LaLaFlottes. It doesn't seem like a year ago, does it!

LaLaFlottes · 12/11/2021 11:11

@opoponax her interview was so early! I remember she was quite shocked how little time there was between getting the invite and the actual interview.

Then such a long wait! I agree - definitely doesn't seem like a year ago!

Solarlantern · 12/11/2021 12:25

Thanks all - feels like the pressure is really starting now😱. @Monkey2001 yes, he is on a gap year so applying with achieved grades - currently has a job plus two clinical volunteering roles which is good for experience but means he has less time to prep (and why I was up insanely early this morning to give him a lift to one of his shifts!). Also means he's not getting any interview practice via school etc so he's going to have to think about how best to practice interview technique - quite a challenge!

MidLifeCrisis007 · 12/11/2021 13:20

@opoponax - thanks for the updates on last year's timelines. If they follow a similar trend, it's likely to be the end of next week before the likes of St Andrews and Bristol send out any interview invites then. Bother! I thought it might be earlier.

7 more sleeps....

MidLifeCrisis007 · 12/11/2021 15:41

Drum roll.....

DD has an interview at St Andrews on 24th November! I'm so delighted for her. We visited over half term and she absolutely adored the place. She could totally see herself there - even though she doesn't play golf like her brothers! She even chose the halls she'd like to live in!

Fingers crossed for her!

LaLaFlottes · 12/11/2021 15:52

So actually no more sleeps @MidLifeCrisis007
Grin
Good luck to DD - exciting stuff

opoponax · 12/11/2021 15:57

Great news @MidLifeCrisis007. A great start to the weekend.

SandyBayley · 12/11/2021 16:00

Do your witchy instincts were correct @MidLifeCrisis007 - you got the day just not the right medical school. Big congratulations to your DD 😊

Monkey2001 · 12/11/2021 17:51

Yes, great news @MidLifeCrisis007! If you have any St Andrews questions, I will try to answer. DS so happy there, really loves the course and the place. He is off to some posh hotel tonight for a bit of celebrity watching, I think Bill Murray is there at the moment and he mentioned a few others, which is funny because he is not at all into celebrity culture really. Which hall did she fancy?

MidLifeCrisis007 · 12/11/2021 17:59

Ooh... thanks @Monkey2001. She's not back from school yet as she had chamber choir commitments - the last I heard she was feeling so sick about it all, she wanted to chunder!!

She liked Agnes Blackadder - mostly because of the short commute to the Med School from there and the en suites. That said, I might have to sell a kidney to pay for it....

Monkey2001 · 12/11/2021 18:24

Haha, accommodation is not cheap, but £7k pa for ABH S/C is not much more than other universities and there are no transport costs. The costs are worse in private accommodation. He is in University Hall and was also there in first year. Also next to medical school and great value if you like the food, which he did. Planning to move out next year.

DS had a choral scholarship last year, in the second choir, not the main one. The standard of music is high, but he finds the choir very posh!
