The continuation thread for those with DC at Durham, or applying to Durham, or alumni, or staff!

September 2021 finds us packing, unpacking, meeting old friends and new, and all with our fingers firmly crossed for a positive year!

Hello, thank you for the new thread.
Glad to see the positive news from Peasebottom at the end of the old one Smile

MidLifeCrisis007 · 18/09/2021 07:39

I'm so pleased to hear that mini @Peaseblossum22 is now sorted!

I can't believe that a week today most of us will be dropping off our little cherubs. Anyone else staying at Days Inn on Friday night?

I'm hoping to see/meet @Peasepuddingplease in person! We have the same drop off time at the same college.

chopc · 18/09/2021 07:55

@MidLifeCrisis007 we are staying at Bay Horse Inn - but on Sat night. No move in slot yet though ....... was hoping to meet some of you in person.......

Thanks for the new thread. Smile

moch · 18/09/2021 08:33

Those of you with dc atDurham are they having face to face lectures? Also are they all living in Durham or have they been housed in neighbouring towns like some other Unis? Dc is thinking of applying to Durham and Manchester and not sure.

KingscoteStaff · 18/09/2021 08:45

@moch At the moment, lectures and seminars are scheduled to be face to face. But that was the case this time last year, too…

Longtimenewsee · 18/09/2021 08:57

@moch I think I’m correct in saying that any extra student accommodation used by the university this year ( DD’s college are using an extra block near the viaduct) is still within Durham itself.

CeliaCanth · 18/09/2021 09:03

Just saying hi…DS is going to Hatfield. All seems very organised with a timed “assembly point outside Durham itself at 10.15 on Saturday (a week today). Will be a very early start for us!

jano69 · 18/09/2021 10:12

Thank you @KingscoteStaff for the new thread.

So very relieved for @Peaseblossum22. I think all of us are sorted now?

We haven't booked accommodation yet. We'll drive back south and find something in Harrogate or Leeds if we can't get anything in Durham on Sunday night.

The plan is to leave home around 6am on Sunday - drop DS off to his new house in the Viaduct and then fresher DD off to Collingwood. I'm wondering whether one of us will have to take the train up to free up space in the car....

KingscoteStaff · 18/09/2021 10:17

Early this morning - pre season rowers up and at it!

Oooh lovely share Kingscote - I have been trying to convince DD to sign up for rowing in freshers week but she doesn't fancy the early starts. I think she should still give it a go...

Peaseblossum22 · 18/09/2021 11:25

@KingscoteStaff thank you for the new thread , gosh that picture brings back memories , I used to cox for Hatfield , my dh was the bow in my first boat Grin. Used to love going all over the north east for Head of the River races , we were quite good I remember winning Wansbeck Head on my 21st birthday !

Can I ask the Trevs people , did you get a separate email about booking a time ?

Parsonage63 · 18/09/2021 11:33

Off early Sunday to drop DC off at Collingwood - and then a gentle drive back over a couple of days by ourselves! Currently attempting to book the Hotel stays.

chopc · 18/09/2021 11:37

So are all Collingwood peeps dropping their DC off on the Sunday?

Baytreemum · 18/09/2021 11:45

Thanks @KingscoteStaff- hello again! My DD is going into 3rd year and is taking herself up by train just before the start of term - she is staying in the same accommodation she was in last year, so has only got to lug up a ton of books and potentially some ski stuff for palatinalps! Good luck to all the newbies - you’ll love Durham- it’s an amazing place when it’s buzzing with all the students!

Yes got an email yesterday with options for Saturday or Sunday drop offs

Peaseblossum22 · 18/09/2021 12:13

Thanks Libby , did you have to accept the agreement first ? Hopefully ds will get it today

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 18/09/2021 12:22

Dh used to row too, he was in Chad's. His early morning alarms used to drive me nuts, i was far too lazy for rowing. On the plus side it did ensure i was always up for breakfast. Me (arts student) and my scientist friends eating toast in the Great Hall in the mornings long before any other arts student emerged.

LeiatheSchnauzer · 18/09/2021 12:28

Dd also got the Trevs email about arrivals yesterday afteroon, i think there was a link in the email to pick the time you wanted. Am fairly sure that she had accepted the tenancy agreement already.
We have the 11am Saturday morning slot and are booked at a b&b called My Way Durham on the Friday night. Will then drive home Saturday evening. I am starting a new job on Monday morning so very glad we aren't a Sunday slot!

libbytrois · 18/09/2021 12:55

@Peaseblossum22 yes he accepted the agreement first. Time slots came shortly after.

Peasepuddingplease · 18/09/2021 15:00

Breaking news fellow Durham mums - matriculation now moved to Durham racecourse! DD gutted to say the least.
Covid regs cited as the reason.
Really fed up with poor information and last minute changes for our DC to deal with.

jano69 · 18/09/2021 15:20

The marquee was used for fashion shows and ballet performances last term so hopefully matriculation will run smoothly. At least, there'll be a good buzz as they all gather together in their college timed slots. DD isn't disappointed, just relieved matriculation is going ahead.

Oh that’s a shame!
