@Jng1 you will only be sent the email to confirm that you are supporting an applicant (and therefore to set up your account) if your DC has indicated that they want to be assessed for the means tested element of the maintenance loan. (The first £4422 is non-means tested). So if he is not claiming even the basic out, no email for you and no need to set up an account.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 04/09/2021 21:06

Ds has had his accommodation contract through for Durham. Info if it helps anyone -it starts Sunday 26th September even though he is moving in on the 25th and runs until Saturday 25th June 10.00.

Re payment they quote the whole amount due in the email but in the full contract available only with a student sign in it states "three (3) equal termly instalments, each due in advance of the official commencement date of each term, or at the very latest thirty (30) days into the Michaelmas Term and fourteen (14) days into the Epiphany and Easter Terms"

@bendmeoverbackwards well done on your shopping trip! You did well. I don't blame you for quitting before Ikea, especially on a Saturday.

Jng1 · 04/09/2021 22:39

@MarchingFrogs Thank you for clarifying that! Thought we’d dropped a ball somewhere!

Longtimenewsee · 04/09/2021 22:53

Useful info @OnTheBenchOfDoom.. thanks

@derekthe1adyhamster

Just a comment on door stops Halls doors are always fire doors, so go with wedges. I have not found a stop that is heavy enough... Most of our car will be filled with the pc and 2 monitors .......
Thanks for the tip @derekthe1adyhamster I’ve seen a really cute doorstop but it’s only 1kg so probably not heavy enough.
Chilldonaldchill · 05/09/2021 22:21

We found door wedges in B and M - the only place we could find them?
They were 10 for £2.50 or something like that so DD has given one to all her friends 😄

bendmeoverbackwards · 05/09/2021 22:44

I’ve bought this

www.matalan.co.uk/product/detail/s2807159_c000/faux-leather-elephant-doorstop-36cm-x-20cm-x-16cm-grey

If it’s not heavy enough she can also use a cheap wedge. Think she’ll like it!

bendmeoverbackwards · 05/09/2021 22:44

Not sure why I’m getting a bit obsessed over doorstops 😂

AvocadoPlant · 06/09/2021 06:15

Oh that elephant is gorgeous!

BigWoollyJumpers · 06/09/2021 13:42

DD is bringing her "HODOR" door-wedge from home Grin.

Majaso12 · 07/09/2021 16:12

Pumpkintopf has your ds found out his accommodation? My dd has managed to find out today.

Pumpkintopf · 07/09/2021 22:52

Hi @Majaso12 , no, he's not had an email or anything- did your DD get an email?

Majaso12 · 07/09/2021 22:56

She’s not had an email. If they log on to Microsoft office and look at their groups, you can see the accommodation. My daughter has Southside. Not sure if she has twin or single yet but hoping for single. Hoping she gets an email tomorrow.

Pumpkintopf · 07/09/2021 23:12

Ooh interesting! The consensus on TSR seems to be that the emails will indeed come out tomorrow. Was Southside one of her five choices?

Majaso12 · 07/09/2021 23:16

Yes it was. She found out how to find out from some groups she’s in. She can see the hall she’s in as well.

Pumpkintopf · 07/09/2021 23:21

So, to look at this would ds have had to have activated his college ID / set up MS office? Sorry- clueless!

Majaso12 · 07/09/2021 23:33

Activate his ID, then sign in to office.com and then top right of the screen, if he clicks on the account manager (will have his picture or initials on the icon) and then select my account and it will open another website and he’ll see his groups he’s a member of. I’ve had to ask how she did it because I’ve no clue.

Pumpkintopf · 07/09/2021 23:44

Thanks v much @Majaso12 really appreciate you finding out for me! Will try to persuade recalcitrant teen to do the necessary, failing that will update tomorrow when hopefully the email lands. I so hope he's got central accommodation... 🤞

Majaso12 · 08/09/2021 10:45

Pumpkintopf Has your ds got the email now? My dd has single en-suite. She was hoping to find out her room number, but it says ‘coming soon’.

Pumpkintopf · 08/09/2021 13:56

Hi @Majaso12 - no he still hasn't. Quick question- did your dds email go to her imperial email or the one she registered with ucas?

He was reluctant to sort out Microsoft last night to try to login but has just surfaced now so am encouraging him to look!

Pumpkintopf · 08/09/2021 14:55

He got Kemp Porter. I'm so unhappy.

Majaso12 · 08/09/2021 15:27

Hi Pumpkintopf. I was just about to say it went to both emails and saw your last post. That’s so annoying because I think your ds chose 2 from Southside, 2 from Eastside and 1 from Beit, the same as my dd. I would be annoyed too. Don’t understand how they work it out. Is there anything you can do to change it?

Pumpkintopf · 08/09/2021 16:13

Thanks Majoso - yes, he did. Just waiting to hear what his mate from school was allocated now - he'd also chosen the three central halls. DH is bigging up the advantages of Acton - cheaper, student community, shops etc etc but to be honest I just feel gutted for him. With all the Cambridge crap then adjustment crap I just hoped this last hurdle would be smooth, you know? I am evidently not very resilient because I feel like crying- and I know this is the very definition of a first world problem!

I don't know what if anything can be done. I think in some years there are threads on TSR for people wanting swaps? Assume uni would allow that if both students agree.. Depending on what his mate gets and how he feels, might get him to give accommodation a ring, see if there's a possibility of a waitlist for one of the central halls in case anyone declines their accommodation offer...don't know what else to do tbh.

Majaso12 · 08/09/2021 16:26

I would feel the same as you. My dd was saying yesterday that lots on the chats she’s on were saying that North Acton would be better and would be more going on etc, so she was then worried Southside wasn’t a good choice and said she was worried they won’t be as social and she doesn’t want to be stuck in her room. Can’t win! I saw on TSR was asking about swapping, but they also got Kemp Porter and wanted Kensington.

My worry now is getting her to pass her driving test. She’s on her 4th go now which is tomorrow! Bit embarrassing she’s failed 3. She’s passed every mock easily and we think she’s good but something unlucky always happens in the real test. She gets very anxious which doesn’t help. If she doesn’t pass tomorrow then not sure what to do because she won’t be passing before uni, won’t get another slot. Then no practice for months. I’ll probably cry over that tomorrow if she fails.

Pumpkintopf · 08/09/2021 16:30

You're so right Majoso there's always something isn't there, if they get Kensington you worry that Acton would've been better and vice versa.

Your poor DD. I had a work colleague who was very anxious about driving (she eventually passed in an automatic) - she swore by rescue remedy, may have just been a placebo though! I really hope everything goes smoothly for her on the test tomorrow, sounds like she's due a nice straightforward test run with no untoward events to throw her off. Fingers crossed for her 🤞
