Nearly filled up the old one...

Happy with the result and my £15 winnings (put a tenner for C to win both races).

ofteninaspin · 04/04/2021 20:30

One dark and one light blue here. DH and I attempted diplomatic neutrality but I did feel bad for Oxford.

Malbecfan · 04/04/2021 21:05

I didn't watch but DD has coxed for her college and done well in the bumps races. My dad is convinced that she'll be in a Boat Race next year/soon but DD doesn't have the time to commit. For her size & weight, she's a good rower, despite never having rowed other than on a machine before going to C. However, she's a size 6 and tiny, so everyone's ideal cox. As she has experience, she is also allowed to take out novice crews, so can be quite busy in the autumn.

She is now back in college. She did a test but they weren't processing them yesterday so is confined to her room, but she is allowed an hour's exercise in the gardens. Hopefully as soon as the test comes back, she'll be free. The interview feedback finally came through; they scored her highly but the speciality they wanted was more biological than hers. So now it's looking like the PhD is on.

When she was at home, she went into a new local shop that sells unpackaged goods like pasta, beans, rice etc. The owner took a shine to her and has offered her some work over the summer, so DD is quite happy that she can earn money in the short term. After I dropped her, I collected DD2. Today she went in to the ice cream shop where she has worked since her 16th birthday and they are desperate to have her back. She doesn't need to go back to uni for 3 weeks, so has picked up some shifts there. Now just trying to work out how to take my dad home and DD2 back whilst not losing a precious weekend once I'm back at work...

Ironoaks · 04/04/2021 21:53

@Malbecfan that's good that they have some work lined up for the summer.

DS is very pleased to have received his first dose of the COVID vaccine, and hopefully will be in line to receive the second dose at the beginning of the summer vacation.

mutterphore · 05/04/2021 08:32

I have to be on both sides for the Boat Race with one at C and one and O and degrees from both places myself! So every year I win! LOL!

Ironoaks, I'm pleased to hear your DS has had his first vaccine. That's good news.

So we're entering the fifth month for students being stuck back at home, including DS1 and DS2. It's very depressing that there's still no news about uni. students - other than those on practical courses. DS1 and DS2 are ever the optimists and talking about going back to uni and various events but of course may not be back for another 6+ months.

Only six weeks of uni life, mixing with peers, developing more independence etc - out of the entire year is so so tiny and DS1 and DS2 are also facing another birthday in lockdown too....

I really hope the government makes some decisions soon for all our student DCs stuck at home. We don't want to hear about holidays or large outside events - just a return to something slightly like a normal uni. life for our young ones.

Flyonawalk · 05/04/2021 08:59

Exactly @mutterphore, this focus on holidays and pub visits gets far more attention than the neglecting of university students. Treatment of them has been dismissive and contemptuous.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/04/2021 09:00

It's as though they are utterly invisible.
I wonder if there will be something about it in tonight's press conference. I bloody hope so.

Unescorted · 05/04/2021 09:09

Fingers crossed on an announcement soon. For those who think they cannot return it may be re-asking the college. DD knows of another couple of colleges that initially said no but are being more lenient now.

ofteninaspin · 05/04/2021 09:35

Fingers crossed here too re an announcement this evening.
DD has one more week until she is permitted back. She also heard this week that she has been awarded a studentship to stay on in college over the summer.

Malbecfan · 05/04/2021 13:12

Good news on the vaccine @Ironoaks. @ofteninaspin it sounds promising for your DD and well done to her on the studentship.

Not holding my breath about today's pronouncement. Neither DD feels anything other than contempt for this government; hopefully the hundreds of thousands of students who have been so badly let down by them might remember this when the next general election happens.

DD has just messaged to say that the porters have delivered her another test so she should be released tomorrow rather than Thursday. Her bf gets back today too so life is looking up

Hoghgyni · 05/04/2021 13:48

I've sent DD the forms for a postal vote for the local elections next month. She was very grumpy when Boris called the last general election just weeks before she could vote

Flyonawalk · 05/04/2021 17:11

Zoos, theme parks and libraries can open. Surely by extension this means universities?

Hoghgyni · 05/04/2021 17:14

Absolutely nothing in the small print. I'm fed up with nobody ever asking him about universities.

Flyonawalk · 05/04/2021 17:19

Isn’t it just. Universities U.K. have lobbied but the issue is being ignored by the media.

PantTwizzler · 05/04/2021 17:24

I’m listening dutifully but it seems unlikely that there will be any mention of universities.

Hoghgyni · 05/04/2021 17:31

This is so frustrating. Students are a minority interest. Whether or not you can book your holiday in Greece sells more newspapers.

JulesJules · 05/04/2021 17:36

So frustrating. We can go to the zoo but who knows if students are allowed back to University.

Flyonawalk · 05/04/2021 17:36

Given that non-essential shops are reopening and schools are already back, surely we can assume that students can return to university? And yes they are a minority interest as far as the media are concerned, but there are over two million of them in the U.K. We need to hear their anger.

cinammonbuns · 05/04/2021 17:44

From this article they will release a statement by end of the Easter holidays which is the 19th of April in England and Scotland.

ofteninaspin · 05/04/2021 17:50

Students ignored again.

JulesJules · 05/04/2021 17:51

That's only a few days before the start of Trinity term @Cinnamonbuns. Ridiculous to leave students hanging on for so long and so close to the start of term.

PantTwizzler · 05/04/2021 17:51

Thanks for the link. I must say it’s despicable from the lecturers’ union to be trying to keep the students away still.

JulesJules · 05/04/2021 17:52

Sorry, spelt your name wrong!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/04/2021 17:54
Angry
Pepermintea · 05/04/2021 18:03

I feel like we need to start some kind of petition or something to get it some media attention
