I am pretty sure I read 70 minutes for the degree ceremony length @icanbewhatiwant ? I don't understand that time-frame though if there's a 9.30am ceremony and then the next one late morning? So they're saying graduates have to be there two hours ahead to get sorted and seated, but there's only a 50 minute 'turnaround' time between the first and second ceremonies of the day. How does that work?

icanbewhatiwant · 08/07/2022 09:45

@LouisCatorze when I looked online it says 9.30am 1.30pm and 5.30pm some days. Other days just 2 ceremonies.

LouisCatorze · 08/07/2022 09:46

Isn't it usual for the post graduation 'get-together' to provide a free drink or two and nibbles? It doesn't look as if that's the case at UEA?

LouisCatorze · 08/07/2022 09:51

@icanbewhatiwant oh clearly I've got that wrong then. Could have sworn there was an 11.30am one on DS's day. Why the need to start the ceremonies so early if there is such a long gap between them (although maybe I've answered that question myself with my query above)?

NotSorry · 08/07/2022 10:00

9.30am is bloody ridiculous - we’ve booked a hotel, we’ve got to get up at stupid o’clock to get to breakfast for 6.30am, go and get DS, go to the P&R and supposedly arriving at UEA for 7.30am FFS

icanbewhatiwant · 08/07/2022 10:01

@LouisCatorze maybe there was. But I looked at the dates a few days after ds's on 20th and there were either 2 or 3 each day. That was on the link for ordering the robes, it shows the dates and times as you had to tick the time and date of the ceremony.

LouisCatorze · 08/07/2022 10:04

@NotSorry I totally agree. It's 'silly' o'clock, particularly given that just-graduated young people generally don't generally keep standard adult (working) hours yet. DS (who used to be a lark when at home) generally doesn't get up until midday left to his own devices!

juicy0 · 08/07/2022 22:41

9:30am for us too 🙈

icanbewhatiwant · 08/07/2022 23:08

I put this on the other thread too.....

Ds's landlord is asking him to pay for a new mattress. It had a stain on. About the size of a fist. Presumably sweat. Weird because Ds had bought a 4" thick topper. But I have no proof whether it was there already. Anyone successfully removed a sweat stain?

LouisCatorze · 09/07/2022 09:02

That is so annoying @icanbewhatiwant . I bet the stain was already there. It sounds as if one way or another your DS1's landlord is being a bit awkward now? To be honest keeping mattresses in tip-top condition is probably a big ask, particularly with students? They're probably one of those things that should be changed with new tenants as a given (and at landlord's expense).

icanbewhatiwant · 09/07/2022 09:23

As I said on the other thread...landlord says it was much worse on the other side. A stain had gone through. I have no proof whether it was there or not. So that's £500 deposit gone. I've told Ds he can pay me that back when he's got a job.

LouisCatorze · 09/07/2022 09:27

£500 for a new mattress, that's awful. I'd be surprised if landlords spend that much (just for the fact that they're probably going to need to be replaced regularly). So sorry to hear that @icanbewhatiwant

The whole thing with students and landlords (and getting deposits back) is a real issue that needs overhauling?

icanbewhatiwant · 09/07/2022 16:31

Dh and I have a few properties between us. I think we have to by law have an agent in to do an inventory with photos. Not sure they have to for student lets. But the landlord has pics of a not particularly nice looking mattress. So not much I can do really.

icanbewhatiwant · 12/07/2022 15:52

Ds seems to think UEA aren't giving out certificates for their degrees. Anyone else heard that? He also says the gowns etc are to be worn for 15 mins for the photo, then to be hung up as they don't get washed between July and sept. They just get passed from graduation to graduation. Lovely. He's already bored with the ceremony and it's not until next week 😂

LouisCatorze · 12/07/2022 16:03

I believe the certificates are sent out after graduation @icanbewhatiwant ?

icanbewhatiwant · 12/07/2022 16:12

Ds is telling me they are only getting one via email. I hope he's wrong.

LouisCatorze · 12/07/2022 16:17

I just found this info on the UEA website. Surely if they send degree certificates abroad, they will send them to UK-domiciled graduates of UEA too?

NotSorry · 12/07/2022 16:54

They’re not via email but they don’t get them on the day

NotSorry · 12/07/2022 16:57

This is from the graduation FAQs

icanbewhatiwant · 12/07/2022 18:27

Thanks. I hope the registered address isn't their rental property that many of them won't live at now.

Sluj · 13/07/2022 08:37

We have DS1s delayed graduation at 5.30pm tomorrow then DS2 next Friday. Are we the first? If so, I will report back with top tips for graduation 🙂

NotSorry · 13/07/2022 08:41

I think so! Please do @Sluj

LouisCatorze · 13/07/2022 09:48

DS delayed opening his result and got a 2:1 but seems very disappointed. He actually seems really low about his whole university experience but perhaps that's normal?

He's due to go off on a short break ahead of graduation which to my mind can't come a moment too soon. Hopefully a change of scene, with non-university company and some new experiences will be a welcome boost.

Good luck with your DS1's graduation tomorrow @Sluj and yes please to feedback.

Thought I’d pop in and say hello👋
interesting to hear about all the graduation ceremonies.
We had DS1 graduation in Bournemouth last week, it was lovely a beautiful sunny day, it wasn’t too long and they had drinks in a marquee on the beach afterwards.
His degree certificate arrived in the post at his student house on the same day.
DS2 is coming up to his Norwich house next week to go out with his housemates (who I presume will have all graduated by then) he’s not been up since March. We are going to take the last things from his room although will be paying for it till the 14th August.
Both of my sons houses have received council tax bills, so I presume they have to pay until the end of their tenancy?
DS1 house was a right mess (I hadn’t been there before) a typical shoddy student house, but it looks like it’s going to need a really good clean before they leave. It’s hard when people all float off towards the end, I can imagine it’s impossible to get everyone to help clean the house properly. I’m expecting they will probably loose their deposits.

NotSorry · 13/07/2022 11:52

@Itscoldouthere My ds suggested they all paid for the end of tenancy clean (the landlady will organise) but the other 3 said they could do it themselves - I’m not convinced…. I think they will lose their deoposit
